Imagine Messi and Ronaldo playing for the same Club?

Messi leaving Barcelona not impossible & he could play with Ronaldo, says former Camp Nou director
GOAL.COM.

Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona is “not impossible”, admits former club director Ariedo Braida, with it suggested that the mercurial Argentine could line up in the same team as eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Exit talk has started to build around the six-time Ballon d’Or winner once more and, not for the first time, a potential reunion with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City has been mooted, with Messi considered by some to be growing disillusioned with life at Camp Nou.

There has been no indication from the man himself that he is looking for a move, but there is a break clause in his current contract which can be triggered at the end of any given season.

Barca had been hoping to agree fresh terms with their skipper and remove any uncertainty regarding his future, but no deal has been done as yet.

Braida concedes that the door is being left open for a one-club man to take on a new challenge at the age of 32, but he is not expecting a change of scenery to be sought.

"Messi is an extraordinary player, he's doing very well at Barcelona," Braida told Radio anch'io sport.

"He's been there since he was 13 and he lives with his family.

"It's difficult for him to leave, but not impossible."

There are few clubs in world football that could afford to finance a move for Messi if he were to become available.

It has, however, been suggested that he could one day head for MLS and link up with an ambitious project such as that being pieced together by David Beckham at Inter Miami.

Ronaldo, who is currently starring for Juventus in Serie A, has also seen a switch to the United States talked up at various intervals.

It could be that a dream team is forged on American soil, or elsewhere, with Braida conceding that two modern-day icons could work well together in the same starting XI.

He added: "They are two such good players that with good work they could work.

"They can play together."

Messi and Ronaldo have spent the vast majority of their respective careers to date scrapping against one another, rather than working in tandem.

Their battle for personal supremacy in the global game has thrilled audiences for well over a decade, with the pair boasting 11 Golden Balls and countless records between them.

Rumour Has It: Messi and Ronaldo to join forces at Inter Miami?
Omnisport

After dominating European football for over a decade, could Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo shelve their rivalry and come together as team-mates?

David Beckham might be the man to make it happen.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder appears to have ambitious plans for his new MLS franchise.

TOP STORY – MESSI, RONALDO WANTED AT INTER MIAMI

Barcelona captain Messi, 32, and Juventus talisman Ronaldo, 35, will end their careers on the same side if Inter Miami co-owner Beckham gets his wish, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claims the new MLS outfit are "already thinking big" and could look to lure football's two biggest superstars to the United States.

LA Galaxy have also been linked with a move for Messi but Minnesota United head coach Adrian Heath believes Beckham's pulling power has the potential to create a dream attacking duo.

“For Ronaldo and Messi, the two obvious destinations if they came to the MLS would be Los Angeles and Miami," Heath told the Mirror.

"And, with his links to both players and the plan Beckham and his backers have in place, I can really only see them going to Miami."

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Would make sense if they'd take a pay cut - they'd make a lot of money off that combo and might inspire a generation in the US.

Players like Mess and Ronaldo should never have to take a pay cut, they should be paid what they're worth, they're box office players.

Yup, which means both at the same time is pretty much impossible for an MLS team to afford.

Messi vs Ronaldo: Those who pick Cristiano know nothing about football, says Van Basten
Goal.com

Netherlands legend Marco van Basten has weighed in on the Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate, claiming that people who prefer the latter know nothing about football.

The argument over which of the pair deserves the tag of the greatest active player has rumbled on for years.

For almost a decade Messi and Ronaldo were direct rivals in La Liga with Barcelona and Real Madrid; the Argentine enjoying greater fortune in the league with his club, while Cristiano and the Merengue helped themselves to four Champions League titles in five seasons.

And it is similarly difficult to separate them in terms of awards. Messi boasts six Ballons d'Or, more than any other player in the prize's history, closely followed by Ronaldo with five.

Many pros past and present have lent their opinions to the debate, but Van Basten believes there is little doubt over the identity of the best out of the two.

"Cristiano is a great player, but those who say he is better than Messi know nothing about football, or they are saying it in bad faith," the former Ajax, Milan and Oranje hitman told Corriere dello Sport.

"Messi is one of a kind. Impossible to imitate and impossible to repeat. A player like him comes along every 50 or 100 years.

"As a kid, he fell into the football genius pot."

Van Basten of course was no mean footballer himself, bursting onto the scene with Ajax as a teenager and scoring an incredible 172 goals in 152 matches for the Dutch giants.

That prodigious form earned him a move to Milan, who under Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello were one of the most formidable sides in the world in the late 1980s and early 90s.

His time at San Siro yielded two European Cups and three Scudetti, while there was also glory at international level as he helped Netherlands take Euro 1988 alongside Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. Prior to the emergence of Messi and Ronaldo he was one of only three players to have won the Ballon d'Or on three occasions, a feat shared by compatriot Johan Cruyff and France legend Michel Platini.

Van Basten's time at the top, however, was cut short by a horrific run of injuries; and he believes that were it not for those physical woes he could have been even better.

"I basically stopped playing at 28. I had already won three Ballons d'Or," he added.

"Just look at Ronaldo and Messi, both over 30, where they are now."

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

van Basten shows his limitations. I once thought as he did, but it's a foolish position - Cristiano Ronaldo has consistently performed at the highest ability at clubs of lower quality than Messi - Messi has had the fortune of being moulded at the best club in the world and have teams built around him for 15 years. Ronaldo had no such luxury, and has performed across the 3 most competitive leagues in the world, whilst also dragging his Nation into international success.

They're both world class, and we are a lucky generation to have seen them play at their prime. In years to come, they will undoubtedly be added to a difficult choice of Pele v Maradona v CRonaldo v Messi (v Cruyff personally). To say Messi is unarguably better shows a lack of imagination and an inability to look past his own allegiances.

Pele: Ronaldo the best player in the world ahead of Messi, but I'm the greatest of all-time
Goal.com

Cristiano Ronaldo's consistency puts him ahead of Lionel Messi as the world's best player, according to Pele, but he doesn't believe that either man is as good as he was in his prime.

Ronaldo and Messi continue to set the benchmark in terms of individual brilliance even as they approach the latter stages of their respective careers, with the former now plying his trade in Italy with Juventus and the latter still Barcelona's talismanic performer.

The two men have shared 11 of the last 12 Ballon d'Or awards between them, with Messi edging one ahead of his rival after picking up a sixth Golden Ball back in December.

The Argentine has since helped Barca return to the Liga summit and reach the Champions League knockout stages, scoring 22 goals across all competitions.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, has 25 to his name for Juventus, including 16 in his last 12 Serie A outings which have helped Maurizio Sarri's side stay on track for an unprecedented ninth consecutive Scudetto.

Supporters and experts remain divided over which man deserves to be remembered as the greatest player of their generation, with Pele among those who feel Ronaldo has the edge due to his goalscoring prowess.

"Right now I think Cristiano Ronaldo is the most consistent player out there, but you can't forget about Messi," the Brazilian told YouTube channel Pilhado.

Pele's place in football's hall of fame has long been assured, due to the fact he helped Brazil win three World Cups at the height of his career.

His records and achievements have long been held up against a man who led Argentina to the famous trophy on two occasions, Diego Maradona.

However, Pele went on to omit Maradona from his list of the all-time greats, while putting himself at the top of the pile.

When asked he if was better than Ronaldo and Messi, the 79-year-old responded: "That's a tough question to answer. I've been asked many times.

"We mustn't forget Zico and Ronaldinho. People always talk about European players like [Franz] Beckenbauer and [Johan] Cruyff.

"It's not my fault, but I think I was better than all of them. There will only be one Pele. There won't be anyone else like me."

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
