Trinidad and Tobago to face Canada in a Friendly on March 27th
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago will face Canada’s Senior Men’s Team in an international friendly on March 27th at Westhills Stadium in Langford, British Columbia, Canada.

This match will be T&T’s first since head coach Terry Fenwick’s appointment as senior team head coach as the country prepares for its CONCACAF Gold Cup playoff in June against either Guyana or Barbados.

“It’s great that we are getting this game. Obviously I’d like to bring some new faces into that first squad and mix it up and give everybody a shot in the arm. The existing squad that we got, they have not won for so long and it’s a difficult time for them,” Fenwick told TTFA Media.

“But that is football. We have now got to generate a bit of energy. We have got to get that passion going and I’ve got to see them guys out there wearing that badge. Listen this is Trinidad and Tobago (with) a bit of pride and passion to get back on track.

“Canada have had three years now where they’ve been working very hard in the background on their development process. They have got three top players that are playing in the Bundesliga at this time and they are good players. They want to be in that Hex.. that top six of Concacaf. That’s where we’ve got to be.”

“It’s not going to be easy. I’m not starting with an easy throw away game. I want somebody who we can get our teeth into because I’ll be expecting big things. I’m not going to make it easy. My players… if they haven’t got Trinidad and Tobago at heart, don’t come. I want to see passion, commitment, doing it for your country. I think if we can instill and bring back a bit of passion and pride I think we have got the sufficient talent to turn over results,” Fenwick added.

Both country have met 11 times at the international “A” level between 1977 and 2012, including competitive matches at the Concacaf Gold Cup and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Including their last meeting in 2012 (a Canada 2:0 win in Lauderhill, FL), Canada have seven wins, two draws, and two losses against Trinidad and Tobago. Canada also defeated T&T 2-0 in closed-door training in match in Los Angeles prior to the 2019 Gold Cup. T&T’s two previous wins over Canada came in 2002 World Cup qualifying semi-final round action, a 2-0 win in Edmonton followed by a 4-0 victory at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain in 2000.

Canada have previously met Trinidad and Tobago 11 times at the international “A” level between 1977 and 2012, including competitive matches at the Concacaf Gold Cup and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Including their last meeting in 2012 (a Canada 2:0 win in Lauderhill, FL), Canada have seven wins, two draws, and two losses against Trinidad and Tobago.

Already this year, Canada have posted two wins and one loss in three international matches played in January. Since 2018, Canada have won 12 of their 16 international matches. In 2019, Canada reached the Quarter-finals of back-to-back Concacaf Gold Cups for the first time since 2009 and finished second in their group of the inaugural Concacaf Nations League A (tied on points with USA, but second on goals difference). Canada also qualified for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup and the next edition of Concacaf Nations League A.

T&T’s last international was 4-0 defeat to Honduras in CONCACAF Nations League qualifying on November 17th.

“We are still in the hunt for the Concacaf Hex and we have cut the points gap in half through Concacaf Nations League,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach on Friday. “We are focused on doing our best to pick up points and close the gap on that sixth spot in Concacaf.

““These are important games for Canada and we wanted to play them at home to give the team the best conditions possible to perform with the people of Vancouver Island providing us with that 12th man atmosphere,” said Herdman. “There’s something special about a small stadium when it is jammed packed and sharing these moments with fans young and old from football communities that don’t often get to see their national team heroes in the flesh.”

Note: Langford is a city on southern Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. A second full international between both teams will be played in this same FIFA international window but will not be opened to the public.

A suitably ranked opponent. :applause: The stage is set.  May we get two things: a good contest on the day and an even better match report from palos.

Tickets to go on sale for second Canada v Trinidad and Tobago Match on Vancouver Island
canadasoccer.com

Canada Soccer has announced that tickets to see Canada’s Men’s National Team face Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday 31 March will go on sale to the public this coming Wednesday 4 March at 10.00 local via Ticketmaster.ca and by phone at 1.855.985.5000. The 31 March match will be the second of two matches Canada will play against Trinidad and Tobago at Westhills Stadium in the upcoming FIFA window, with the first match set for Friday 27 March.

The announcement follows an incredible response by Canadian fans to the 27 March match with all seated tickets selling out in just a few short hours of going on sale to the public and additional standing room inventory sold in the following days.

“These are important games for Canada and we wanted to play them at home to give the team the best conditions possible to perform with the people of Vancouver Island providing us with that 12th man atmosphere,” said Herdman. “We are excited that the community has had such a strong response and that we will have two jammed packed stadiums with fans young and old from football communities that don’t often get to see their national team heroes in the flesh.”

Tickets to the Canada v Trinidad and Tobago 31 March match will start as low as $20 via Ticketmaster.ca (or by calling 1.855.985.5000). To ensure the Canadian soccer community has the best opportunity to attend the match and take advantage of the chance to see some of their favourite heroes, groups of 10 or more will have access to an exclusive pre-order window ahead of the public on-sale. Due to stadium capacity there will be limited group inventory available and will be sold on a first come first serve basis. To access the group ticket program, featuring discounts of up to 30%, groups must submit their orders by 17.00 PT on Tuesday 3 March via the group order form.

The two-match series with Concacaf rivals Trinidad and Tobago is part of Canada’s ongoing preparations for FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers in the Fall of 2020.

With two different qualifying pathways scheduled for the region, Canada are in a chase for a top-six spot in Concacaf on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings in order to compete in the Concacaf Hex (nations 1-6) rather than a more demanding alternate route (nations 7-35). Trailing El Salvador by 30 points in July 2019, Canada have already cut that gap in half and now trail by just 14 points after a trio of matches in January 2020. From Concacaf Nations League matches in the Fall, Canada gained more FIFA ranking points than any other nation in League A.

“We are still in the hunt for the Concacaf Hex and we have cut the points gap in half through Concacaf Nations League,” said John Herdman, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team Head Coach. “We are focused on doing our best to pick up points and close the gap on that sixth spot in Concacaf.”

Since the Concacaf pathways were unveiled in July 2019, Canada have picked up 20 points on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings while El Salvador have picked up just four. Canada have also opened the gap on the several nations behind them, notably eighth-place Curaçao (19 points back) and ninth-place Panama (28 points back).

The first match on 27 March represents the first international “A” match on Vancouver Island since Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team played at Victoria’s Centennial Stadium on 4 March 2006. Previously on Vancouver Island, Canada played Olympic Qualifiers in 1983 and 1984 (they qualified for the Los Angeles Men’s Olympic Football Tournament at Victoria’s Royal Athletic Park on 18 April 1984), FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers in 1985 (on the road to qualifying for the 1986 FIFA World Cup™), and Concacaf Women’s Championship matches in 2002 (on the road to qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 2003™).

The Canada camp will run from 23-31 March in Vancouver, Langford, and Victoria, British Columbia, with the opening part of their camp training held at the Vancouver Whitecaps FC National Soccer Development Centre at the University of British Columbia.

Canada have previously met Trinidad and Tobago 11 times at the international “A” level between 1977 and 2012, including competitive matches at the Concacaf Gold Cup and FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers. Across those matches, Canada have seven wins, two draws, and two losses against Trinidad and Tobago. Canada also won 2:0 over Trinidad and Tobago in a training match before the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup last year.

Alberta chief medical officer has banned gatherings of 250+ people and recommends not leaving Canada. Also recommends anyone returning from outside of the country self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival.
I know the games in BC but it should be relevant

Upcoming International Friendlies against Canada cancelled due to COVID-19
TTFA Media

With the best interest of the safety of players, staff members, officials and fans among all stakeholders The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and Canada Soccer have taken a decision to cancel the two upcoming international friendlies between both countries scheduled to take place Langford, British Columbia, Canada on March 27th and 31st as the world continues to grapple with the spread of COVID-19.

The TTFA believes that cancelling the matches was the “prudent course of action.”

“Due to the uncertainty of the coronavirus and the impact it is having on countries, major events both sporting and other forms across the globe, we have decided, along with Canada Soccer, to cancel the upcoming international friendlies against Canada which were scheduled for Langford, British Columbia,” said TTFA President William Wallace.

“As major organisations are making difficult and complex health and risk management decisions about hosting or partaking in sporting events which involves travel and and assembly of large crowds it became apparent to us that this was the most prudent course of action,” Wallace stated.

The first of the two matches scheduled for Westhills Stadium was reported to be sold out according to the Canada Soccer Association

“It is of course disappointing to us as we were anticipating both games, the first for our recently appointed head coach Terry Fenwick and critical towards our preparations for the CONCACAF Gold Cup playoff in June. With that said, we are in the process of another plan of of action to at least give our men’s team some form of preparation during the upcoming window. Of course this is subject to the conditions due to COVID-19”

The TTFA wishes to advise that already a few of our overseas-based players have indicated that they would not be available to travel for the matches due to travel restrictions related to COVID-19 including Saudi Arabia-based midfielder Khaleem Hyland and Israel-based winger Levi Garcia.

T&T head coach Terry Fenwick stated, “Obviously it’s disappointing that we will not be able to play these two matches but it is totally understandable under the circumstances as the safety of everyone involved is of utmost importance. We will continue to monitor the situation and work towards a plan that can see our team having an opportunity to work towards the qualifiers coming up.”

It is also worthy to note that Football’s governing body FIFA has decided to cancel the next FIFA Congress in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia scheduled for June 5th to September 18th It has also pushed back the coming FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, due to be on March 20th, until June or July.

FIFA said in a statement “Numerous international bodies and public health authorities have advised against the organisation of international events,” the statement said.

CONCACAF has also suspended matches in the Champions League.

The TTFA earlier today suspended all National Teams training sessions until March 27th and have also cancelled all Screening Sessions for the Boys U-14 and U-16 teams until further notice.

As the national governing body for football, the TTFA will continue to closely monitor all COVID-19 developments in consultation with the Ministry of Health and all relevant governing bodies through our Medical Committee.

While all of this is happening (no football) I encourage the FA and the Government of T&T to work out a facility for expediting player passport applications (for both first-time applicants and prior/current holders). The arrangement should be a model for other sporting disciplines that have identified players to represent the national team. It is unacceptable as a matter of public policy that persons in these categories can't or won't be accommodated with dispatch.

As an example, the Spanish government assisted in the fast tracking of Ansu Fati's passport so that he could be called up for WC and UEFA age group competition. In the end, for other reasons, he wasn't included in the squad but that was an internal team and federation decision.

Considering that Fati's citizenship eligibility was not predicated on descent, we should be even more sensitive to accelerating player applications based on descent grounds.

Who were the players called up for these matches? I saw Rory Mc Kenzie was called up. Apparently he has been called up again and he still doesn't have a passport.
