TTFA dawdle approach angers TTSL's president.
By Inshan Mohammed.

The Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) applied to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) almost two months ago for permission to host a match as part of the Islands Cup Caravan with some international super-stars being delayed once again.

The TTSL president Keith Look Loy finds himself in another wrangle affair with the TTFA's delay-tactic.

The TTSL wants to bring Brazilians super-stars Ronaldinho and Rivaldo. Italy's Luca Toni, former France internationals Florent Malouda and Djibril Cissé to Trinidad in October for a gala football match against a local TTSL All-Star team.

But there is one hurdle standing in their way, the TTFA. The TTSL needs permission from the governing body to host such event and there are no other alternative route because the TTFA must sanction the venture.

Planning to bring these big name players is something that needs to be organised early to make sure the players are booked, In addition, it will allow local organisers the opportunity to arrange tickets and venue simultaneously. Now with the TTFA slow approach to approve the gala local football, fans hope of seeing these super-stars in action could be crestfallen.

“They have scheduled FA Cup for that [15 October] date,” Look Loy told Wired868, “which shows that they have no interest in granting our application because we applied for that date a long time ago, way before they did up the fixtures.”

Look Loy stated that the TTSL are set to receive TT$100,000 from CFTL for the planned gala showdown. Of this, he said, TT$50,000 will go towards players and staff chosen for the ‘All-Star’ game while the remaining TT$50,000 will go straight into the TTSL’s coffers.

The new TTSL were formed in December 2016 when 13 clubs decided to take fate into their own hands. Things propelled at a swift rate and by January 2017 the TTSL had submitted every documentation requested by TTFA to launch the new Super League. It took 46 days for the governing body to acknowledge receipt of the application, which occurred on February 23.

After months of back and forth entreats from Keith Look Loy they finally got the go-ahead in May. A month before the league kicked-off which left clubs scrambling to get things in order for their opening games.

Thank goodness Look Loy had planned ahead and behind the scenes as he had expected a delay from the TTFA and the transition were successful for the start of the new season.

While the current Professional League struggles financially, the TTSL seems to be heading in a upward position, at least for now. Caribbean Football Trust has already injected TT$550,000 into TTSL. A two years sponsorship deal with global sporting company, Umbro at a tune of $100,000-plus equipment deal and a US$25,000 donation from TTFA.

Guaya United, has a support base which dwarfs that of most Pro League teams while Siparia United, Petrotrin Palo Seco, Matura United, Bethel United and champions FC Santa Rosa also boasted of getting hundreds of fans out for important match-ups.

The TTSL is one of the bigger leagues in the country after the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) with 19 Clubs including 2 teams from Tobago. While the Pro-League only has 10 teams and none from the sister-isle.

The TTFA normally does things secretly and without rumination to what anyone thinks or feel. They have hosted many international stars as well and seems like nothing else should function without them. Anything football related in the country they must have some control and power over it, not to mention staff members and coaches are just given position without proper plebiscite.

In April 2017, the TTFA hosted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to make it's historic event of the opening of a National Technical Development Centre in Couva. Former Argentina international Pablo Caesar Aimar and former Colombia national team forward Juan Pablo Angel appeared in the goodwill football match at the Ato Boldon Stadium between a TTFA/FIFA team and a Government/SPoRTT outfit.

In July 2017 through an initiative led by Tony Lee and I95.5FM in conjunction with the TTFA hosted exhibition match in Laventille.

The match included former Brazilian World Cup winning captain Cafu alongside former Portugal international Maniche. Teaming up with former Jamaican internationals Ian Goodison, Gregory Messam, Ricardo Gardner and ex-Grenada player Jason Roberts among other local heroes like Dennis Lawrence, Stern John, Russell Latapy and Carlos Edwards.

On August 9th the TTSL hosted its inaugural election at the Ato Boldon Stadium and Keith Look Loy defeated Ryan Ottley in the race for the TTSL presidency. Look Loy is now set to take his seat on the TTFA Board of Directors when the umbrella body holds its next EGM and will surely have this work cut out for him under the current TTFA administration.

Look Loy: TTFA misinterpreting own constitution to frustrate TTSL gala All-Star affair.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) and Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) have adopted adversarial positions, thus far, on the latter’s staging of an All-Star match on 15 October 2017, which should involve celebrated retired football stars like Brazil’s Ronaldinho, Rivaldo and Cafu.

The following are releases from both football bodies over the past 24 hours:

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association wishes to state that contrary to information being relayed to the public by the Trinidad and Tobago Super League, the FA does not have the authority to sanction the All Star Game to be staged by the League in October 2017.

The FA wishes to  further confirm that it has in fact made a request to FIFA to have the Match sanctioned and is currently awaiting their approval. The FA will also like to place on record that it was only on the 29th of August 2017 it received from the TTSL information requested since early August by the FA to support the TTSL’s application to send to FIFA.

The TTFA will in no way attempt to stall an event of this magnitude which is intended to aid the promotion of the sport in Trinidad and Tobago and the region. The FA will continue to support the development of the TTSL.

The relevant articles of the TTFA’s Constitution are listed below for your information:

Article 78: International Matches and Competitions

The Authority for organising international matches and competitions between representative teams and between Leagues, Club teams and/or scratch teams lies solely with FIFA, the Confederation (s) and/or the Association (s) concerned. No such match or competition shall take place without the prior permission of FIFA, the Confederation (s), and/or the Association (s) concerned in accordance with the FIFA Regulations Governing International Matches.

The TTFA is bound to comply with the International Match calendar compiled by FIFA.

Article 79: Contacts

TTFA, its Members, Players, Officials and match and players’ agents shall not play matches or make sporting contact with Associations that are not Members of FIFA or with Provisional Members of a Confederation without the approval of FIFA.

The TTFA issued a media release yesterday in the matter of the request by the Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) for permission to host an international match. In said media release, TTFA quotes Article 78 and Article 79 of its constitution.

Regarding Article 78 above, TTSL is of the view that it is patently clear that the language of the statute—“… and/OR the Association…”—enables TTFA to sanction, if it so wishes, the event for which TTSL has requested permission to host.

Regarding Article 79 above, TTSL does not understand why TTFA is resorting to this statute. The event in question is being promoted by Caribbean Football Trust Limited (CFTL), which is a recognised entity in Caribbean football, and involves two matches:

1) a match between TTSL All Stars and Jamaica Premier League All Stars, i.e. a match involving players from two FIFA-affiliated leagues;

and 2) a promotional match between Trinbago Oilers and a World XI, which involves only retired international stars.

In its media release, TTFA also claims to have received information from TTSL only on 29 August. For clarity, I provide a timeline of the unfolding of developments in this matter:

TTSL’s request for permission to host an international match on 16 September was tendered to TTFA on 13 June—almost three months ago.

After several requests by TTSL for an update, on 9 August, TTFA requested a list of the foreign players to participate in the proposed event, which list was provided by TTSL on 15 August.

On 15 August, TTSL also advised TTFA of a change of date from 16 September to 15 October—which CFTL advised TTSL was necessitated by the delay in the grant of permission by TTFA and the consequent need for CFTL to renegotiate the availability of certain foreign players, all of which affected the marketing of the event.

Since 15 August, TTFA has issued fixtures for the 2017 FA Cup, which include matches scheduled for 15 October, the very date requested by TTSL for its proposed international event.

In conclusion, TTSL is of the firm view that TTFA has immediate and constitutional authority to sanction the proposed event.

Further, the continuing delay by TTFA in sanctioning the event, and the Association’s decision to schedule a conflicting event on that date, are a threat to an international event proposed by TTSL for the benefit of local players, clubs and football.

TTSL awaits further developments and remains hopeful that TTFA will do the right thing and assist TTSL in the promotion of our great sport.

It's not an intl friendly and also isn't ttsl sanctioned under ttfa?

The constitution is written to destroy development in TT football, FIFA should have no right to decide if a local super league club can host an all star match locally.. it's not an international friendly during the match dates..

I don't understand the logic in this?

TTSL MEDIA RELEASE

The TTFA issued a media release yesterday in the matter of the request by the Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) for permission to host an international match. In said media release TTFA quotes Article 78 of the TTFA constitution, as follows,

“The Authority for organising international matches and competitions between representative teams and between Leagues, Club teams and/or scratch teams lies solely with FIFA, the Confederation (s) and/or the Association (s) concerned. TTFA also quotes Article 79 of its constitution as follows,

More delays for TTSL gala; T&T to get pre-Christmas Ronaldinho treat?
By R.Walcott (Wired868).

The Trinidad and Tobago Super League’s (TTSL) bid to bring Brazilian legends Ronaldinho and Rivaldo to a playing field in Trinidad has hit a snag—another one!

Caribbean Football Trust Limited (CFTL), sponsors of the TTSL’s proposed “All Star” showdown, have confirmed that the event will now be pushed back by two months, largely owing to the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria across the Caribbean archipelago.

CFTL plans to go on a Caribbean tour to countries such as Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname to market its Islands Cup Open tournament. The anchor leg of that journey was set to be Trinidad and Tobago, where two exhibition games were carded to take place on 15 October.

Now, Wired868 understands that CFTL, chaired by former Trinidad and Tobago international player Chris Anderson, have rescheduled all the stops on their regional tour and their new date for the visit to the two-island republic is now 16 December.

“As a result of forced measures and unforeseen circumstances relating to the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria and other upcoming weather systems that can further impact our other host countries,” Anderson wrote in a letter sent to the TTSL, “we have been forced to reschedule the roll-out of our holistic regional marketing and promotional campaign.

“Please note that this game will be titled ‘Soccer Aid to Hurricane Victims,’ with all revenue achieved after expenses to be donated to assist the victims throughout the region.”

Previously, the TTSL and CFTL had shifted their gala event in Trinidad from the month of September to October to accommodate their headline act, Ronaldinho, who is currently participating in a Futsal tournament in India.

Now, will the former Barcelona superstar be able to find time in his calendar to samba to some parang soca?

TTSL President Keith Look Loy is uncertain as to how the delay will affect the appearance of the high-profile cast but he is hopeful that CFTL will be able to renegotiate any terms smoothly and swiftly.

Former Netherlands stand-out Clarence Seedorf, Florent Malouda, Pablo Aimar and Djibril Cissé are among those whom the TTSL President hopes to see showcasing their wares on local soil. However, not for the first time, Look Loy expressed the view that the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has not been not treating the matter with the urgency it deserves.

“My presumption is that if they had gotten something from FIFA,” Look Loy told Wired868, “they would have told us. It’s just stuck in the matrix.”

“The failure of TTFA to secure FIFA approval is a real disappointment,” he continued. “But in the end, the TTSL looks forward to making its contribution to the reconstruction of those Caribbean countries devastated by the hurricanes.”

TTFA director Sharon O’Brien told Wired868 that FIFA did acknowledge the TTFA’s last correspondence concerning the All-Star event. However, O’Brien indicated that FIFA is yet to give the local body the green light or give a timeframe for when they will respond.

For now, Look Loy remains hopeful that the additional time given by the CFTL rescheduling will be enough to see a 16 December show go on without a hitch.

“[The TTFA] now have all of October and November to organize that,” Look Loy said, optimistic and apprehensive at the same time.

It was only about a month ago that the TTFA and TTSL revealed themselves to be at odds over the proper interpretation of a couple of articles in the TTFA Constitution which focus on the staging of international matches. In a media release, Look Loy affirmed his belief that the David John-Williams-led body had all the power to sanction the proposed All-Star event and suggested that it was misinterpreting its own constitution.

The relevant articles, 78 and 79, of the TTFA Constitution read as follows:

Article 78: International Matches and Competitions

The Authority for organising international matches and competitions between representative teams and between Leagues, Club teams and/or scratch teams lies solely with FIFA, the Confederation(s) and/or the Association(s) concerned. No such match or competition shall take place without the prior permission of FIFA, the Confederation(s), and/or the Association(s) concerned in accordance with the FIFA Regulations Governing International Matches.

Article 79: Contacts

TTFA, its Members, Players, Officials and match and players’ agents shall not play matches or make sporting contact with Associations that are not Members of FIFA or with Provisional Members of a Confederation without the approval of FIFA.

The two encounters to which the TTSL and CFTL hope to treat local football fans will see a TTSL All-Star team coming up against a Jamaican Premier League All-Star team while Trinbago Oilers will tackle a World XI that includes, if all goes well, Ronaldinho.

The majestic Ronaldinho once dazzled at Under-23 level against T&T in a friendly encounter. And earlier this month, the 37-year-old showed he still had a trick or two up his sleeves when he scored a cheeky goal for the Delhi Dragons against Bengaluru Royals in India’s Premier Futsal League.

But the TTSL standouts aren’t planning to be mere on-the-field spectators and they will be aiming to produce some “ooohs” and “aaahs” of their own from the crowd come December. Look Loy confirmed that the new TTSL All-Star team for the exhibition game will now have to be confirmed after the end of the league season in November.

TTSL League One top-scorer Carlon Hughes (Guaya United), T&T Beach Soccer player Kevon Woodley (Cunupia FC) and Rashad Griffith (FC Santa Rosa) will all be hoping to consolidate their spots on the team which was originally named last month. However, they will have to keep an eye out for new UTT recruit Cornell Glen, Petit Valley/ Diego Martin United standout Keron “Ball Pest” Cummings and Ricardo Alleyne and Anthony Parris from the high-flying Prisons FC team which recently sealed promotion to League One.

That’s now tentatively all set for 16 December. Will there be a parang samba production courtesy of TTSL and the CFTL in the two-island republic in the run-up to Christmas?

It promises to be a very high note on which to end the 2017 season…

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Super League clubs in uproar as AGM postponed.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

The T&T Super League and its president Keith Look Loy have come under fire for a decision to postpone this year's Annual General Meeting (AGM) due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Guardian Media Sports was reliably informed on Wednesday that the AGM was postponed indefinitely because of work restrictions.

However, some members took offence to this decision because at the last AGM in December last year at the Queen's Park Oval, some members were alleged to have been debarred from entering the venue to participate.

However, one member Derek Edwards, from Petit Valley Diego Martin United (PVDM United) yesterday questioned the decision, saying it was not made clear whose work has been restricted to cause such a delay.

"This COVID-19 pandemic has existed since April, therefore, it cannot have been a surprise to who so ever has had their work restricted. If indeed, the pandemic has incurred delays, this should have been foreseen by our Executive months ago and strategic solutions put in place. One cannot help but wonder if banging the nails into the coffin of T&T football and the hours spent on social media defending the actions of United TTFA, have distracted our President from his TTSL duties. In this regard, I am requesting that the reasons for this delay be explained in detail and the AGM to be arranged via Zoom to take place within the next two weeks."

Edwards, who said it is not just his club but their several other clubs that are also concerned with the decision. He noted that this year's AGM is particularly important to update some clubs that were suspended, on their current position, and to treat with alleged monies taken from the TTSL account to fight a legal battle with FIFA.

Jameson Rigues, the T&TSL first vice president said: "Regarding the AGM of the TTSL; Article 27.1 of the TTSL Constitution states that the AGM shall he held every year in the month of November. An email by the League Secretary, Peter Thomas went out to members informing that the AGM has been delayed by work restrictions due to the Covid-19 virus. This came as a surprise to me and to members of the TTSL. I was contacted by a few of the clubs inquiring about the validity of this postponement, I told the clubs that they should respond to the email with their concerns, because to me, as much as COVID-19 have done damages beyond expectations, some good came out of it too, because now we are encouraged to utilize available technology. There are many means to which this AGM can be held when it is due; we have all sorts of virtual platforms to choose from, and this eliminates many of the logistical challenges, especially when you have members coming from Tobago and Guayaguayare."

Meanwhile, Edwards claimed that monies taken to assist the TTFA was done without the permission of the members.

Back in 2018, some 11 clubs did not take part in the League, either because they were suspended for being non-compliant with TTFA/CONCACAF/FIFA rules, or they did not pay the registration fee of $45,000 by the required deadline for entry.

Contacted yesterday for a response Look Loy refused to comment, however, the PVDM boss took the opportunity to remind all of what happened at the last AGM, saying: "After the debacle that took place before the 2019 TTSL AGM, which left clubs locked out and unable to participate in the selection of delegates, it was hoped that this year’s AGM could proceed in a much more transparent and democratic environment. Particularly, as President Keith Look-Loy has spent the last 18 months boasting of his yearning for democracy, justice and transparency. It was widely believed that the trickeries at the 2019 AGM was designed to gerrymander votes for United TTFA, of which Mr Look-Loy was intricately associated with. Aside from the locking out of certain Super League members, the AGM itself was unaccountably delayed and then hastily carded within a month of the TTFA election."

Edwards believes the decision to postpone the AGM is a tactic by the Super League boss to dodge questions by the membership for his role as part of the United T&T Football Association which contributed to the country being banned by FIFA at present.

Edwards believes Look Loy and the United TTFA members have brought the sport into disrepute.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
