Atlanta United Communications

Atlanta United Academy midfielder Ajani Fortune earned his first call up to the senior Trinidad & Tobago National Team. He will join the squad in Florida ahead of its upcoming friendly on Jan. 31 against the U.S. Men’s National Team (7:00 p.m. EST, FS1) at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Fortune, 18, joined the Atlanta United Academy prior to the 2018-19 season. He made 19 appearances with the U-17s that year and scored five goals, while also featuring in three matches with the U-19s. The following season, Fortune played in four matches with the U-19s during the shortened season. Internationally, Fortune has made four appearances with Trinidad’s U-17s.

On July 11, 2020, Fortune made his professional debut with ATLUTD 2 against Charleston Battery in the USL Championship. He completed the season with 11 matches played, five of those coming in the starting XI. The midfielder scored his first professional goal on Sept. 12 against The Miami FC. Fortune finished the campaign with 464 total minutes played, 78.3 percent passing and a duel success rate of 48.7 percent.

Fortune could face two familiar faces in the upcoming friendly as George Bello and Miles Robinson also earned call ups for the USMNT. Bello became the first Atlanta United Academy player to earn a call up into the U.S. Men’s National Team, while Robinson looks for his third cap.

Excellent interviews Mr Fuentes. The subjects were also quite positive and fresh. Wish we had another game planned even against a US local team, so everyone could get a run out.

Atlanta United signs Ajani Fortune as Homegrown player
Atlanta United Communications

Atlanta United announced today it has signed Atlanta United 2 midfielder Ajani Fortune to a Homegrown contract through the 2024 season with multiple additional option years, effective Jan. 1, 2023. Fortune, who made his debut with the Trinidad and Tobago national team in 2021, joined the Atlanta United Academy in 2018 and has played 48 matches with ATL UTD 2.“We’re excited to sign Ajani as a Homegrown Player after following his development with our Academy and ATL UTD 2,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “Ajani’s progression to the First Team is a credit to him and the excellent work being done by Matt Lawrey and our developmental pathway. He’s a talented midfielder who reads the game very well and has a great work rate. We look forward to him taking the next step of his career.”

Fortune, 19, has become a staple of Jack Collison’s ATL UTD 2 setup in midfield since signing from the Atlanta United Academy in August 2021. The Raleigh, North Carolina native has made 14 appearances, 10 of them starts, logging 971 minutes in the 2022 USL Championship campaign, including captaining the side in its last match against San Antonio FC on July 16. In his three seasons in the USL Championship, Fortune has made 48 appearances, 31 starts and has scored three goals.“I’m really pleased for Ajani because I’ve seen first-hand how hard he’s worked for this opportunity,” Atlanta United 2 head coach Jack Collison said. “He brings such energy to his role in the midfield and he’s always taken the chances he’s been given to take the next step in his development, going back to his days in the Academy. He’s earned that next step and I’m ecstatic that it’s here with the club.”

Joining the Academy before the 2018-19 season, Fortune worked his way through the ranks in the U-17 and U-19 squads before making his professional debut with ATL UTD 2 against Charleston Battery on July 11, 2020.“We are so proud of Ajani and his accomplishments here at Atlanta United,” Atlanta United Academy director Matt Lawrey said. “He exemplifies the humble work rate we always talk about here in the Academy. His technique, calmness on the ball, and ability to solve any situation with his talents and his brain, define him as a player. But his humility, willingness to work hard for his coaches and teammates, and love of the game define him as a person. We are so excited for him to take his next step in his career.”

The midfielder earned his first international call-up for the Trinidad and Tobago national football team on Jan. 31, 2021, making his debut against the United States in a friendly the next day; he has made two career appearances for his country.

Atlanta United (6-8-6, 24 points) travels to Los Angeles to face LA Galaxy on Sunday, July 24 (9:30 p.m. EST, FS1/FOX Deportes, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).

TRANSACTION: Atlanta United signs Ajani Fortune as a Homegrown Player on July 21, 2022, effective Jan. 1, 2023.

Atlanta United’s Ajani Fortune makes MLS debut
By Doug Roberson (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Standing on the touchline near midfield, Ajani Fortune experienced one of the longest waits of his young life.

Fortune was waiting to make his MLS debut near the end of Atlanta United’s 3-0 road win Saturday against Charlotte. But it was a race against the clock.

There were only a few seconds left in the game. The ball needed to go out of play. Finally, it did, and Fortune went in for Luiz Araujo.

Though Fortune, 20, didn’t get to touch the ball, he achieved a dream.

“I was just happy to see my number go up and be able to go in, and it was a great moment,” he said. “And thank the coaching staff, players and everybody around me who’s helped me get here so far.”

Fortune joined Atlanta United’s academy in 2018. It was there that he realized that if he “locked in” every day he could become a pro. He signed a Homegrown contract in July 2022 that went into effect Jan. 1. Fortune, a midfielder, made 59 appearances for Atlanta United 2 in the USL the past three seasons.

Fortune was a leader on Atlanta United 2, serving as captain last season. Now he’s surrounded by more experienced players. So, he’s watching, listening and learning. Some of those things include seeing unexpected passes and other details that can make him better. “Keep learning” is the best piece of advice he said he’s received.

“So that if an opportunity comes later on down the road where I’m put in that same position, I’m ready for it,” he said.

Centerback JuanJo Purata said Fortune trains very well and has a brilliant future.

Fortune said the longish wait to go in against Charlotte allowed him to gather his thoughts and listen to instructions from assistant coach Diego de la Torre.

Fortune was going to take a free kick so that he could get one touch in the game, but he said Brooks Lennon took it instead.

“This is one of the goals I had when I first joined the academy was to be able to play with the first team in this type of environment,” he said. “And I’m just glad that it’s paid off a little bit.”

Fortune said the next step is to earn more minutes.

That may be difficult. Santiago Sosa is back from suspension. Franco Ibarra is playing well. Amar Sejdic started at central midfield against Charlotte and helped the team score its first goal.

“It all starts with training,” Fortune said. “Just try and come back and train, and for me, do the best I can to get that day out of my head, focus on the next one to try and train the best I can to give myself a chance of, at first, making the roster and then from there, coming on and see what else can come from there.”
