T&T, Montserrat Gold Cup qualifier set for Fort Lauderdale
T&T Guardian Reports.

T&T and Montserrat will play their preliminary round of the Concacaf Gold Cup clash at Inter Miami CF Stadium in South Florida, the home of US Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

The match in Fort Lauderdale, Florida will be one of nine qualifiers to be contested between July 2-6, leading to the final three nations qualifying for the 16-nation Gold Cup group stage.

For 2021, Concacaf’s flagship competition will for the first time include the preliminary prior to the 16 team Group Stage.

The 12 nations participating in the prelims qualified through their Concacaf Nations League performances and will compete for the final three spots in the Gold Cup Group Stage.

The Terry Fenwick-coach T&T squad who are also in the midst of their Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers will come up against Montserrat on July 2 or July 3 while the matches between Haiti-St Vincent and the Grenadines, Guatemala-Guyana, and Cuba-French Guiana, Guadeloupe-Bahamas and Bermuda-Barbados, are also scheduled.

The winner of the T&T-Montserrat encounter will then face the winner of the Cuba-French Guiana match in Round Two of the preliminary playoffs on July 6 for a spot in the Group phase alongside Mexico, El Salvador and Curaçao in Group A.

The Haiti-St Vincent and Bermuda-Barbados winner joins the USA, Canada and Martinique in Group B.

The Guatemala-Guyana, Guadeloupe-Bahamas winner joins Costa Rica, Jamaica and Suriname in Group C.

Honduras, Panama, Grenada and invited guest Qatar, next year’s World Cup host, are in Group D.

Most top players are not likely to play in the Gold Cup, which runs from July 10 to August 1.

The Gold Cup is expected to be a key part of what is sure to be a vibrant summer of football in the region, which will include the Concacaf Nations League Finals which starts in June.

“We look forward with great anticipation to this summer’s Gold Cup, which will undoubtedly be enhanced by this new Preliminary Round,” said Concacaf president and FIFA vice president Victor Montagliani.

“The past year has been very challenging in our region and our thoughts are with all the communities that have suffered. We hope the opportunity to watch the best men’s national teams in Concacaf compete in our flagship tournament can provide fans with some hope and enjoyment.”

“All 12 of the competing nations in the prelims will get a full Gold Cup experience at the excellent Inter Miami facilities and we look forward to a great set of games,” added Montagliani.

“We look forward to hosting the Gold Cup Prelims tournament in our stadium,” said Inter Miami CF Managing Owner Jorge Mas. “Our facilities in Fort Lauderdale were built with the intent of giving our fans opportunities to enjoy the world’s game knowing that our vibrant culture and sports-centric region would be attractive for global teams and competitions. This is just the beginning of the great things that lie ahead.”

The Inter Miami CF Stadium, a brand-new football-specific stadium was inaugurated just last year and is the new home of T&T winger Joevin Jones, who signed for the club last month.

The centralised venue, which includes an 18,000-capacity stadium sitting adjacent to a 50,000-square-foot training centre with seven fields spanning across 34-acres, will allow for teams to play matches and train in one location.

For Round One of the Prelims, the teams were drawn into six matchups and will play as follows:

Round One – July 2 and 3

Matchup #1: Haiti vs St Vincent and the Grenadines

Matchup #2: Guatemala vs Guyana

Matchup #3: T&T vs Montserrat

Matchup #4: Cuba vs French Guiana

Matchup #5: Guadeloupe vs Bahamas

Matchup #6: Bermuda vs Barbados

The six Round One winners will qualify for the second round and will play as follows:

Round Two – July 6

Matchup #7: Winner Matchup #1 vs Winner Matchup #6

Matchup #8: Winner Matchup #2 vs Winner Matchup #5

Matchup #9: Winner Matchup #3 vs Winner Matchup #4

The winning nation in each of the three Round Two matchups will advance to the Group Stage of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup, where they were drawn

Draw Delivers Prelims Matchups and Groups for 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup

Concacaf yesterday conducted the first ever Gold Cup draw to set the scene for the 2021 edition of the region’s flag into Group A, B and C as follows:

Group A: Mexico, El Salvador, Curacao, and Winner Prelims 9

Group B: USA, Canada, Martinique, and Winner Prelims 7

Terry Fenwick expects well-organised Montserrat in Gold Cup qualifier
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday).

NATIONAL men’s football coach Terry Fenwick says he expects a well-organised Montserrat team when both teams meet in the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifiers in early July.

T&T will play Montserrat on either July 2 or 3 in Florida, US.

The match against Montserrat will be held just weeks after T&T continue their quest in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Concacaf Zone qualifiers.

T&T will come up against Bahamas on June 5 in Group F, followed by their final game of the first round of the qualifiers on June 8 against St Kitts/Nevis.

T&T are in second place with one win and one draw, two points behind St Kitts/Nevis. T&T eased past Guyana 3-0 in their opening match of World Cup qualifying in Dominican Republic on March 25, before being held 1-1 by hosts Puerto Rico three days later.

Only the top team in the five-team group will advance to the next round of World Cup qualifying.

Speaking to Newsday on Friday, Fenwick said, “Montserrat, we recognise (they have) multiple players from the lower leagues of the UK English divisions so we know they are going to be relatively well-organised, some good players in there.”

However, Fenwick is uncertain what players will be available for T&T and Montserrat because the covid19 pandemic is still affecting travelling around the world.

“The underlying factor here is whether their players as well as the players that we are attracting from the UK are actually going to be available because of travel restrictions…it is a difficult call at the moment.”

Several overseas-based T&T players were available for the World Cup qualifiers against Guyana and Puerto Rico including captain Khaleem Hyland, Joevin Jones, Levi Garcia and Sheldon Bateau. Daniel Phillips, an English-born player who has T&T roots, made his debut for T&T against Guyana.

Fenwick said he continues to scout players with T&T heritage who can be beneficial to the team.

“I don’t want to name any names until they actually land in Trinidad…but we have got some big players that we are speaking to, we want them involved with T&T football. We need to get back on a winning track.”

Fenwick has had his challenges arranging friendly matches during the downtime for his players since he took over as coach in January 2020. He has had to settle for matches locally including matches against local club teams and a Tobago XI.

“We are rolling from World Cup qualifiers and almost immediately into Gold Cup qualifiers. I am trying again to organise a friendly game or two, in and around these competitive games, for the players that come in, but it is not easy we have gotten no football on the ground in T&T so we are limited.”

Prior to the World Cup qualifiers in March T&T were targeting friendly international matches against Dominica, St Vincent/Grenadines and Grenada but those matches did not materialise.

Mexico awaits in Gold Cup

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Mexico will play Trinidad and Tobago in the opening match of the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage should the Soca Warriors get past the two-match qualifying stage. The teams played out a thrilling 4-4 draw in their last meeting at the 2015 tournament.

Yesterday, CONCACAF announced the full schedule for the region’s flagship men’s national team competition. This year’s edition will include a new preliminary round (July 2-6) prior to the group stage (July 10-20) and a revamped knockout stage (July 24-August 1).

Prior to the start of the group stage, 12 national teams that qualified through their CONCACAF Nations League (CNL) performances, will compete in the preliminary round (prelims) from July 2-6, 2021.

These matches will take place at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, United States and will determine the final three teams in the group stage.

Yesterday’s unveiling of the full fixtures saw the Soca Warriors with a July 2 qualifying round opener in Fort Lauderdale, USA, against a solid Montserrat team made up primarily of England-born players. Should they advance, T&T will face either Cuba or French Guiana on July 6, with the winners advancing to the main group stage and a July 10 opening match against Mexico.

This summer’s Gold Cup, the 16th edition of the competition and a key part of CONCACAF’s 60th anniversary celebration, will be played in 11 stadiums across eight US metropolitan areas. Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will host the competition’s final match on Sunday, August 1.

“We are extremely pleased to confirm the schedule and venues for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, which promises to be a celebration of football in our great region,” said CONCACAF president and FIFA vice-president Victor Montagliani. “Twenty twenty-one is CONCACAF’s 60th anniversary year and we look forward with great anticipation to watching the best men’s national teams in our confederation compete for the Gold Cup title. With an exciting new format and the prospect of welcoming passionate fans to the stadiums for these compelling match-ups, I can’t wait for the football to begin on July 2 and to crown a champion in Las Vegas on August 1,” added Montagliani.

Shabazz: Montserrat will not be easy opponents.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

It's not usually familiar for T&T footballers to dwell on low-ranking regional opponents, but it seems obvious now, with Montserrat in the path of the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification.

Jamal Shabazz, the T&T football coach who has had stints in charge of the Guyanese and St Lucia national teams, and is equipped with first-hand knowledge of the Montserratian team, having had mixed results against them as the St Lucia coach in the CONCACAF Nations League in recent times, is urging new national coach Angus Eve and the public to not take Montserrat for granted.

The Montserratian team appears to be no push-over team with some 18 to 20 of its players plying their trade in the lower Leagues in England and the UK, such as centre defender Donervon Daniels at Crewe Alexandra, centre forward Lyle Taylor at Nottingham Forrest, defensive midfielders James Comley and Rohan Ince representing Maidenhead United, and Brandon Comley at Bolton Wanderers, among many others.

Ranked 180th on the FIFA rankings, the regional team held the Shabazz-led St Lucians to a 1-1 tie, as well as defeated them 1-0 in the CONCACAF Nations League last year. They were also highly competitive against Central American opponents El Salvador in the same competition.

Shabazz told Guardian Media Sports on Friday that: "First of all, they would be a formidable opponent for T&T, and we must not believe that they are just Montserrat, a small island that was ravaged by a hurricane. In the last three years alone they have emerged as a very challenging opponent, not just in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) but in the CONCACAF. They have had good match-ups against teams like El Salvador and other Central American and Caribbean opponents."

He explained that: "Montserrat has at least 20 players in the squad who play in the lower leagues in England and the UK, and that alone makes them a huge challenge. They are very organised defensively and they are tactically disciplined, similar to what we've seen in Puerto Rico. However, given the talent that's available to T&T, while it might be a tough encounter, we're very capable of getting the desired result against them."

T&T wounded from their failure to advance past the first round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the Soca Warriors have since replaced its coach Terry Fenwick with Angus Eve, as the team need to get past the Montserratians on July 2 if T&T is to progress to the next round of the qualifiers where the twin island Republic will face either Cuba or French Guiana on July 6.

Guardian Media Sports was reliable informed that Eve selected a provisional squad of 60 players which also highlights a welcome return of Columbus Crew midfielder Kevin Molino, who missed the country's four qualifying matches of the World Cup due to injury.

Without Molino, Shabazz believes the team already has a diverse collection of midfielders who can get the job done, as he pointed to Duane Muckette, the scorer of one of the two goals against St Kitts & Nevis on June 8, along with Neveal Hackshaw and Kevan George. However, he called on Eve to not be burdened by the challenge ahead of him and to do what he thinks is necessary to get the result.

"I think Eve got to trust himself and his own judgement because he got the job based on something that the Normalisation Committee believes he can bring to the table. When you're in a position like that, self-belief is the most important thing," Shabazz advised.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Eve picks Molino, Griffith III in provisional squad.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

Newly appointed T&T men's senior team coach Angus Eve has selected a 60-man provisional squad that sees the return of Columbus Crew midfielder Kevin Molino.

The talented 31-year-old attacking midfielder has been out for the past two months with a niggling hamstring injury but he had been planning his return to the team for the past weeks.

Molino has very little time to find form as T&T faces a tricky Montserrat, whose rise to 180th on the FIFA ranking was due to gutsiness in both attack and defence, as seen against Central Americans El Salvador in the Nations Cup recently.

That game will be on July 2 in the USA and only a win will afford the Soca Warriors the right to advance to the next round of the qualifiers where a match-up with either Cuba or French Guiana awaits them on July 6.

Eve told the media at a virtual press conference on Monday that he will give everything he has to give the country some hope, following the failed attempt to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, as the team finished second in a group comprising St Kitts & Nevis, Bahamas, Guyana and Puerto Rico when it was expected that they would have emerged.

With 13 days to go before the Montserrat match, Eve faces a possible retrial of all the players, coupled with the establishment of a system of play. Right-back Jesse Williams was one of the local bright sparks in the Fenwick team and was again called by Eve, alongside Judah Garcia, Akim Andrews, Che Benny, the man who scored the wonder-goal for T&T at the recent Futsal qualifiers, Isaiah Lee, Justin Sadoo and Gary Griffith III, the son of Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith, who has been put in the unfortunate position of having to shake off the negativity of the recent past and focus on sealing a place in the team.

Williams (Jesse) who made his debut in the country's 2-0 win over St Kitts & Nevis in the Dominican Republic on June 8, told the media he wants to make a difference in the communities and in the nation as a whole.

A devout Christian, Williams said he believes he can make a significant difference in the environment using football, but he will first have to make that change when the country faces Montserrat in two weeks time.

60 players named: Good!

However, there still seems to be a missing X-factor. But, the job has to be done with some configuration of those named.

In Angus we trust until we don't.   :)

Eve gets down to work ahead of Gold Cup qualifier.
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian).

Newly appointed T&T men's senior team interim coach Angus Eve enjoyed his first day on the job with a core of locally-based players on Sunday as they begin preparations for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup preliminary qualifiers.

T&T, who were recently knocked out from the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup Qualifiers under fired coach Englishman Terry Fenwick after failing to advance from their first round round-robin pool of five which was won by St Kitts and Nevis earlier this month, is carded to meet Montserrat on July 2.

The match will be played in Florida, USA and only a win will afford the Soca Warriors the right to advance to the next round of the qualifiers where a match-up with the winner of the Cuba and French Guiana tie on July 6.

Reached for comment, former national captain Eve, 49, who has made the most appearances for T&T at senior level - 117, scoring 34 goals said, the live-in camp for the locally-based players was due to kick off on Saturday, but due to minor hiccups had to be delayed by one day which now means the camp will conclude on Thursday, a day later as well.

He added, “It was a very good first day where all the players who were invited have shown up and they all have an equal chance to impress."

Twenty-four (24) players, not the final squad for the upcoming Gold Cup qualifiers in Miami next month, is in camp at the Home of Football in Balmain, Couva and had their first session at the Ato Boldon Stadium, on Sunday morning.

With time against him, Eve who is also the coach of Secondary Schools Football League powerhouse Naparima College as well as professional outfit, Club Sando, did note that it was far too early for him to say exactly how much of the locally-based players he will be taking with him for the Gold Cup qualifiers.

“We have to assess the players and based on what we see, then we will be able to know how much of them will make the cut, then we also have to take into account the players that are coming from overseas who will or may not be available."

The TTFA yesterday announced the appointment of the interim senior men's team staff. They are assistant coaches Reynold Carrington and Hutson Charles, goalkeeper coach Clayton Ince, strength and conditioning coach Adaryll John, performance trainer/massage therapist Saron Joseph and physiotherapist Roger Ryan.

They will be assisted by national teams director Richard Piper, team manager Adrian Romain, logistics manager Basil Thompson, team Doctor Akash Dhanai, equipment manager Michael Williams and press officer Shaun Fuentes.

Sheldon Bateau, Levi Garcia unavailable...T&T team named for Gold Cup qualifiers.
By Yohance Simonette (T&T Newsday).

INTERIM head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago men’s senior football team Angus Eve has trimmed his provisional 60-man squad for the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifiers to 26.

The team will leave Trinidad on Thursday for the qualifiers which will be held in Florida, USA.

Experienced defender Sheldon Bateau and midfielder Levi Garcia, who have been both regular members of the team in recent years, are not in the squad.

On Wednesday, Eve told the media at a training session at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva that the players are unavailable.

The squad includes several players who were part of the first round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. TT did not advance past the first round.

Goalkeepers Adrian Foncette and Nicklas Frenderup have been selected, along with defenders Aubrey David and Radanfah Abu Bakr.

Midfielders Khaleem Hyland, Joevin Jones and Kevin Molino have been named and striker Ryan Telfer.

T&T will play Montserrat in the Gold Cup first round qualifier at the DRV PNK Stadium in Ft Lauderdale on July 2. If successful, TT will play the second round qualifier on July 6 for a chance to play in the tournament from July 10 to August 1.

Coach Eve isn't the first coach to be encouraged by practice intensity and player enthusiasm. Being encouraged by that is understandable. Just doh get seduced by correlating both variables and projecting them into the anticipated match. Very slippery slope.

Prior to the revelation of this squad, I made a list of 10 players who I viewed as indispensable to success. 7 of the 10 are in this squad. Another 6 players I expected to be selected although I don't regard them as indispensable. That's 13 players out of 26. 50% return of the included. Not exactly compelling.

Well, 13/23 = 56.5% ... fairly sure all will be in the 23. Nonetheless, still not compelling.

I'm hopeful that the players selected are sufficient + for getting the job done (defeating Montserrat and defeating the subsequent opponent).

That stated, with the GC kicking off a mere few days after the July 6 match, questions arise as to how this squad is to be innovated with non-selected players ... the premise for the dimensions of the present squad being time limitations.

Seeing a questionably "brave" approach in selection. Here's hoping the play on the pitch reflects ambition and bravery and we don't get bogged down in a needless physical contest.

Go Warriors!

Strange - No one commented on the Technical team . I thought The Federation had financial problems.
Why do we need a manager as well as a National Team Director .Let us not ask about the Physiotherapist as well as a massage therapist. Some folks are on a joy ride.

Perception that there are many cooks cooking de same meal at the same time and maybe little to no bottlewashing or other tasks going on.

Also: surely someone must be at least a tad surprised that Romain keeps his job.

Trinidad and Tobago defender Alvin Jones wants squad to redeem themselves

Trinidad and Tobago defender Alvin Jones wants squad to redeem themselves
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

VICTORY FOR the Trinidad and Tobago men’s football team against Montserrat in their opening Concacaf Gold Cup qualifier on Friday is the first step towards seeking redemption from a disappointing 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying exit.

Returning national defender Alvin Jones believes the men’s team must grind out a positive result to begin the healing process of the team’s failed World Cup qualifying bid.

Jones, who missed the Qatar qualifying campaign because of an injury, returned to the national set-up under recently-appointed coach Angus Eve. A win on Friday, he says, is integral to boost the team’s confidence and reignite the passion and support from concerned fans.

“A win, it’s very important," Jones said. "T&T fans are dying for greatness. We have an opportunity here to change it around. This is one of the biggest tournaments in our region. I think the guys should do their best and hope we can qualify.

“It’s good. It’s a task we have. We didn’t do so well in the World Cup qualifiers and we have a chance now to change it. I hope all the guys are focused and can take their task and do well,” he added from the team's Miami base on Friday.

The squad arrived in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday and did a light training session. According to a statement issued by the team’s media officer Shaun Fuentes, the unit trained twice on Friday at the South Regional County Park and Training Fields in Boca Raton. The remaining overseas players will continue to arrive in camp in Boca Raton over the weekend

Friday morning's session was curtailed due to a lightning warning which forced Angus Eve and the team to leave the training field after roughly 20 minutes.

Arriving to join the camp so far is assistant coach Reynold Carrington, Costa Rica-based Aubrey David and US-based Molik Khan.

Eve and his assistant coaches were due to attend Joevin Jones' (Alvin’s brother) Inter Miami FC MLS match with Orlando City on Friday night at the DRV PNK Stadium, the venue for T&T match against Montserrat.

On his return to the squad, Jones said, “It’s always a pleasure for me to represent my country and I’m very glad to be back. I think Joevin will play a big part for us. He’s home and his fans are here. I think he will give it his all.”

He also credited Eve on his appointment and is confident the coach has what it takes to lead the squad back to winning ways.

“I know him personally. Angus is a winner. He knows about winning. I just want him to put that spirit in us and hopefully we can,” he added.

With regards to T&T’s unsettling exit from the World Cup qualifiers, Jones was forced to watch his nation bow out of contention courtesy a shocking 0-0 draw against Bahamas.

“It was very disappointing moment for me just sitting home watching the game. I was injured but I just wanted to be out there to battle with the guys. It took a lot from me,” he said.

Jones used the loss as inspiration to hasten his recovery and return to national duty.

“It (Bahamas result) helped me along with my injury. After that day, I tried training three to four times harder and it helped me to get back faster. Physically I feel 100 per cent good,” he concluded.

Soca Warriors play practice match on Monday, Joevin injured out.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

The T&T team will head into a training game on Monday to provide the locally-based players an opportunity at some much-needed match practice, ahead of the July 2 opening CONCACAF Gold Cup encounter against Montserrat.

Head coach Angus Eve's team was engaged in a series of intense training sessions since the team arrived in the USA on Thursday, as T&T prepare to get past the Montserratians and to stay alive in the qualifiers. Should T&T beat Montserrat, the Soca Warriors will have the opportunity to face the winner of either Cuba or French Guiana on July 6, for the right to be among the Groups at the Gold Cup tournament.

The team was recently joined by defender Aubrey David, the Deportivo Saprissa player, while other players such as defensive midfielder Khaleem Hyland (Al Batin) and attacking midfielder Kevin Molino, the Columbus Crew player who has just returned from injury, are expected over the next couple of days.

However, Eve, a former national player, will not have the services of instrumental midfielder Joevin Jones due to an injury he picked up recently. Only Friday news began circulating that the speedy Inter Miami FC player would be out of the Gold Cup and the rest of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season after rupturing his PCL, as well as suffering an MCL grade 2 strain in the left knee, during a game against Orlando City at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, USA, the same venue that the T&T vs Montserrat game will be played on.

Jones was expected to be a key component of Eve team against a Montserrat outfit that will be littered with players from the lower leagues in England and the United Kingdom.

The former T&T player who has played at least four times in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, has not yet begun to establish a style of play for his Warriors, as that will be done after today's match. "The initial reason for the camp was to get some legs under the locally-based players because they would not be in match-mood, so we're trying to get them up to some kind of match-level speed, and then the game on the 27th would add to that process.

They primarily will play that match because the guys will be flying in on that day and other days. So this game is really about the local players getting that match-fitness in, so when the foreign-based players come in, those other days we will be working on the shape, the strategies that we want to play and implement, in the first game we have against Montserrat," Eve explained.

The T&T coach, selected after the failure of previous coach Terry Fenwick at the World Cup qualifiers, has been surrounded with everything he needs to prepare the team for the Gold Cup tournament. And his players have responded with a zeal to make up for that failed World Cup attempt. Eve said: "Coming off the disappointment of the World Cup, not qualifying, you find that the guys are up for it. I've tried to impress upon them that this is a new tournament and a new game, so they have new objectives."

Joevin Jones to miss Gold Cup qualifiers for Trinidad and Tobago.
By Jeleni Beckles (T&T Newsday).

THE Trinidad and Tobago men’s senior football team received a huge blow ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifiers as Joevin Jones will not be available after picking up an injury.

Jones injured his left leg while playing for Inter Miami FC against Orlando City in a Major League Soccer match at the DRV PNK Stadium in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, on Friday. Jones has been one of T&T’s leading players over the past few years.

T&T will play Montserrat in the Gold Cup first round qualifier at the DRV PNK Stadium in Ft Lauderdale on Friday. If successful, T&T will play the second round qualifier on July 6 for a chance to play in the tournament from July 10 to August 1.

T&T will also be without Sheldon Bateau and Levi Garcia because they are unavailable.

Fellas why is it that Jomal Williams not included currently? Is it that the Salvadorean league is not considered good enough, or has he declined participation?
Also I wondering if Bateau and Levi are willingly unavailable or are they facing club pressure.
Good luck to the team.

Molino not taking Montserrat lightly.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

Kevin Molino, on return from injury, is promising to give his all to bring back the smiles on the faces of the T&T's fans and country.

The Columbus Crew attacking midfielder has come into the team just when another key player, Joevin Jones was ruled out due to injury. Molino had some words of encouragement and comfort for his teammate, also sharing in an interview yesterday that he is excited to be back in the T&T team and is eager to help the team get the result, it needs.

The Soca Warriors, now under new coach Angus Eve, will need to get a win against Montserrat when the two teams meet in a CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifier on Friday at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The reward for a win against the Montserratians is the right to face the winner of either Cuba or French Guiana for a place in the group phase of the Gold Cup.

Molino’s arrival completes the cadre of overseas-based professionals who were expected to join the team to begin preparation - formulating a structure of play, coupled with a strategy for the Montserratians. That preparation began yesterday at the South County Regional Park.

Molino believes a good result on Friday lies in their preparation and approach.

“Once we work together as a team, it’s possible to win. If you look at the Euros what happens. Football is played on the day, it’s not on paper.

"So we have to go into each and every game with the right mentality. Play Montserrat as though we’re playing Mexico. And we just have to continue progressing in training. We know it’s a new staff and new players in the mix, but we need to go out there and give it our best shot. Work hard, but not just for us but for the people back home who have been suffering because of the coronavirus (COVID-19)."

National coach Eve was expected to select his 23-man team for the match yesterday which would require him to cut just three players. But with Jones, going down injured, Eve would now be required to drop just two.

Molino, speaking about the injury to his fellow Carenage resident and close friend, said Jones’ injury is a huge blow for the T&T team, but he noted also that it would present an opportunity for some of the younger players on the team.

Soca Warriors warm-up match called off in Florida
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

MONDAY’S scheduled warm-up match, between the T&T football team and Miami Dutch Lions, was called off on Sunday night for covid19 safety reasons, according to a media release from the TT Football Association (TTFA).

The media release stated, “The players of Dutch Lions did not undergo the necessary PCR covid testing prior to the match. Therefore, the T&T medical team advised against playing to avoid the risk of any members of the T&T team contracting the virus going into the (Concacaf) Gold Cup qualifier against Montserrat on (Friday at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, US).”

The media release added, “All necessary covid protocols continue to be followed by the T&T team contingent with members undergoing two sets of PCR testing since the start of the residential training camp in Boca, all returning negative results.”

Experienced central midfielder Kevin Molino and defender/midfielder Neveal Hackshaw joined the team camp in Florida, US on Monday, while captain Khaleem Hyland, Andre Fortune, Jelani Peters, Triston Hodge and Ryan Telfer joined on Sunday.

Denmark-born goalkeeper Nicklas Frenderup is the only member of coach Angus Eve’s 26-man squad yet to arrive in Florida, but he is expected to do so on Tuesday.

Veteran goalkeeper Marvin Phillip is back in the squad, having missed this month’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Concacaf Zone First Round qualifiers against the Bahamas and St Kitts/Nevis.

The 36-year-old Phillip, in an interview with the TTFA Media on Sunday, said, “(The Gold Cup) is the second-highest tournament for us. We all know World Cup is the highest.”

The winners of the TT-Montserrat game will face the winners of the July 3 tie between Cuba and French Guiana on July 6, for a spot in the Gold Cup.

Eve was hired as coach on June 15, after Terry Fenwick and his assistants Derek King and Kelvin Jack were fired after the failed World Cup campaign.

“With the local guys, he’s getting a good response, in terms of what he wants from us,” said Phillip on his new coach.

He continued, “The onus is (on) us to bring back our football to a much-respected level, and to have the fans back on our side.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

CoP has change of heart, helps T&T footballers, staff get visa.
By Jeleni Beckles (T&T Newsday).

COMMISSIONER of Police Gary Griffith has continued to assist the national men’s senior football team weeks after saying he will no longer support the team.

Over the past decade, Griffith has thrown support behind the national team. Over the past year, he has come to the aid of national players under former coach Terry Fenwick which included providing meals and transport.

He has also allowed the team to train at the St James Police Barracks.

Angus Eve replaced Fenwick as interim head coach on June 13. Eve contacted Griffith in an effort to get visas for two of his players and two technical staff members.

At a Police briefing on Tuesday, Griffith said, “As the Commissioner of Police at times I would interact with the US Embassy…I was liaising with the immigration department to try to see how we could fast track to get those passports to have players that might very well have competed or even replaced my son (Gary Griffith III). In this same situation, Angus Eve got the job yesterday for today. He had to fly out a couple days later, he contacted me and there were two players he needed to get on board.”

Griffith confirmed two members of the technical staff also needed help getting visas.

“There were four persons that he asked for me to assist desperately…I interact on a regular basis with our international allies so I was able to liaise with them and explain the situation (that) it was national duty for national players and if they were able to assist.”

Griffith has been criticised for his connection with the national team and was questioned if he was trying to get his son Griffith III on the team.

In a statement on Facebook on June 4, Griffith said he will no longer support the team following criticism that his involvement was in an effort to get his son chosen.

“Today, I am more convinced than ever, that my decision to now, walk away completely from any further assistance, support of, or with the men’s national senior team is the correct thing to do, as nothing in this world is more important to me than my family. Today, Express journalist, (named reporter), in her continued attempts to obtain an ‘ah ketch yuh’ moment, has now moved into sport reporting, and joined the ranks of the many in this country who have found it fulfilling to discredit, disrespect, and pour disdain upon my son.”

On Tuesday, implying that his son may be next in line, Griffith, who is not a T&T football selector, said, “These two individuals got their US visas and because of that my son who was on the previous squad of 23 for the last World Cup (qualifying) game against St Kitts was then dropped for another player who I got the visa for. So persons who claim that I have influence on getting my son on the national team put that in your pipe and smoke it.”

Griffith III was part of the 60-man provisional squad for the Gold Cup qualifying tournament named on June 18. When the squad was cut to 26 a week later Griffith III was not included.

T&T will face Montserrat in the first round of the qualifiers on Friday in Ft Lauderdale.

Newsday tried to call normalisation committee chairman Robert Hadad but was not successful. Newsday also sent a few questions to Hadad via WhatsApp on Tuesday night. Newsday asked whether the normalisation committee planned to continue working with Griffith, whether team management or the Ministry of Sport should facilitate the process in getting visas for the players instead of Griffith and if the normalisation committee is concerned by the conflict of interest because Griffith's son is part of the training squad.

The normalisation committee is in charge of the operations of the TT Football Association.

Fellas why is it that Jomal Williams not included currently? Is it that the Salvadorean league is not considered good enough, or has he declined participation?
Also I wondering if Bateau and Levi are willingly unavailable or are they facing club pressure.
Good luck to the team.

Peong, it is not that the Salvadoran league is not considered good enough. Ah mean, it is isn't stellar (Ah alluded to that on the Jomal Williams thread) ... but think about it, the current NT team has a bunch of players who are playing nowhere. Toss that option out. League quality it ain't.

Plus, ppl in El Salvador have been having out of body experiences to get his services.  And, it isn't that he doesn't want to play.

Yuh know what the pitiful thing is: there hasn't been a transparent statement from the information mafia regarding Jomal Williams.

Bateau better off doing what he's doing on tour in the Netherlands. I think we could benefit from his absence.

Levi: AEK played Vitesse today and face Feyenoord on Saturday and they have a coach who has been on the job roughly a month. So, do the maths.

Edit: Bateau and dem got banged around 7-2 by Utrecht today after beating up on inferior opposition 7-1 (lower tier team) a few days ago.
