TKR trade DJ Bravo to St Kitts & Nevis Patriots
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T NEWSDAY).

Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) has agreed to trade former captain Dwayne Bravo to the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots for the 2021 Caribbean Premier League.

In return, the four-time champions will receive veteran wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin from the Patriots.

A statement issued by T&T franchise, on Friday, said Bravo, who had been with the team since CPL inception in 2013, made the switch in search of a new challenge.

Bravo said, “At this stage in my career, I needed a new challenge, which is to work with the young talent for the benefit for Cricket West Indies.

“I want to thank TKR for respecting my wishes and for all their support over the years. I also appreciate everything they have done for T&T in general.”

TKR director Venky Mysore also heaped praise on Bravo’s contribution, which played an integral role in affirming the squad as one of the most feared and respected CPL teams.

He said, “DJ Bravo has not only been instrumental in building TKR into a champion team but also captained the team which earned three championships in 2015, 2017 and 2018. We are sad to see him leave but we respect his wishes and his desire to help Caribbean cricket.”

The TKR statement also credited captain Kieron Pollard, who led the team to victory at last year’s edition, which was played in a bio-secure bubble in Trinidad without spectators.

They also announced that Sunil Narine will serve as vice-captain of the squad.

“We welcome back Denesh Ramdin to the TKR family and look forward to the 2021 season and defending our title.”

This year, the CPL will be hosted in its entirety at Warner Park in St Kitts, bowling off on August 28. The 33-match tournament will allow fans to attend at up to 50 percent capacity of the 8,000-seat venue – once proof of covid19 vaccination is presented.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Rayad Emrit: St Kitts/Nevis Patriots to be reckoned with in 2021 CPL
JELANI BECKLES (T&T NEWSDAY).

ST KITTS/Nevis Patriots captain Rayad Emrit is anticipating the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament after it was announced that the entire tournament will be held at Warner Park in St Kitts. Emrit also believes that Patriots can be a force to be reckoned with in 2021 after years of disappointment.

On Tuesday, it was revealed on Zoom that the tournament will be held in St Kitts from August 28. Among those who attended the virtual media conference were St Kitts/Nevis Minister of Sport, Education, Youth and Culture Jonel Powell and CPL CEO Pete Russell.

Fans will return to the CPL this year as, from next month, the St Kitts/Nevis Government will allow 50 per cent capacity at sporting events. St Kitts/Nevis has recorded less than 50 cases of covid19 with no deaths.

Speaking to Newsday on Thursday, Emrit said, “It is good news for Patriots and their fans to have the entire tournament staged in St Kitts and Nevis. I know the fans there are starved for cricket, likewise the entire Caribbean, but at least the 50 per cent capacity of fans is something different now and the whole team will definitely be looking forward to play in front of their fans. I think it is going to be good for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and hopefully we could have the same run like TKR (Trinbago Knight Riders) had last season.”

This is the second consecutive year the CPL will be played in one country. In 2020, the tournament was played in Trinidad with matches at the Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair and the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba. TKR ended the season unbeaten to win their fourth title.

Patriots have never won a CPL title, but Emrit thinks in 2021 the franchise cannot be taken lightly.

Last year’s tournament was one to forget for the Patriots as the franchise finished at the foot of the six-team standings.

Patriots ended with just one win from their ten matches. The Patriots best finish since tjey became a franchise in 2015 was a second-place finish in 2017.

Asked if 2021 could be the year of the Patriots, Emrit said, “I know for a fact that the management staff is trying to comprise a very good team this year. There are going to be some surprises.”

He said Patriots will turn some heads in this year’s tournament. “Most of our players who were signed at the beginning of the (2020) tournament did not turn up for whatever reason and the replacements that were there we just did not do the job, so hopefully we could put things right this year. I know a lot of work is going on in the background and we are going to be a team to be reckoned with this year.”

West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen was one key player who missed the 2020 tournament. Allen never made it to Trinidad after missing a flight.

Warner Park is one of the smaller grounds in the region. Emrit expects high scoring matches especially in the early stages of the tournament, but said the wicket may change as the tournament progresses. A total of 33 matches will be played at the venue.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Dwayne Bravo 'will be missed', says Trinbago Knight Riders manager Colin Borde
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH  (T&T NEWSDAY).

DWAYNE BRAVO will not be appearing for the Trinbago Knight Riders in this year's edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament.

On Friday, the former TKR captain, who led the TT franchise to victory in 2015, 2017 and 2018, revealed that at his own request, he had been traded to the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKNP) for the forthcoming season.

Bravo’s request to change teams was agreed on by TKR management.

In return, SKNP traded wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin to TKR. Ramdin is also a former TKR player, who represented the franchise from 2016-2019.

Bravo had contributed to the TKR, four-time winners. since the inception of the CPL in 2013.

On his unexpected change of teams, Bravo said, “At this stage in my career, I needed a new challenge, which is to work with the young talent for the benefit for Cricket West Indies.

“I want to thank TKR for respecting my wishes and for all their support over the years. I also appreciate everything they have done for TT in general.”

At the 2020 CPL, which was held in a bio-secure bubble without spectators in Trinidad only, Bravo was replaced as skipper by countryman Kieron Pollard. The latter led the T&T franchise to a historic fourth title, the most won by any competing team thus far.

TKR manager Colin Borde said the animated but talented all-rounder would leave a void in the team set-up. But TKR remain intent on retaining the CPL title when this year’s competition bowls off in St Kitts on August 28.

“Dwayne will be missed for this massive contribution to TKR and its successes over the years. He has bright vibrancy, enthusiasm, energy, skill, leadership and above all humility in his approach to the game and the team members,” said Borde.

The TKR manager also welcomed Ramdin back to the squad and believes he will be a crucial asset to helping them go all the way at the 2021 edition.

In 2019, Ramdin was not retained by TKR, after spending the past four years there. He was immediately picked up by SKNP and featured under their banner in 2020.

Borde added, “Having Ramdin back with us is having one of our son's come back home. His experience and affection for playing for the local franchise will only benefit us in every aspect.

“His role on the field in keeping it all together has been proven time and time again and we are so happy to be reunited with him.”

Rayad Emrit, who also joined up with SKNP alongside Ramdin last year, welcomed Bravo’s addition to the squad. SKNP had a rough season in 2020, as they finished bottom of the table, recording more losses than wins.

Emrit thinks Bravo’s involvement, backed by his experience, will provides the franchise with bolstered firepower, both with the bat and ball.

“To have Dwayne in our team, someone with over 500 T20 wickets, is going to be a very good addition to our team. He has great experience and has played in every single condition in T20 cricket.

“To have him to work with us, the team and the younger players, is a really good signing and addition to our squad,” said Emrit.

Losing Ramdin, however, would be a big blow to the team, since he has been versatile behind the wicket and put on some good displays with the bat at last year’s tourney.

“We’ve lost probably the best wicketkeeper/batsman in the Caribbean. Losing Ramdin…it’s hard to lose Ramdin. Buton the other hand, we got someone like Dwayne and we’re very excited to have him in our set up,” Emrit added.

This year, the CPL will be hosted in its entirety at Warner Park in St Kitts. The 33-match tournament will allow fans to attend at up to 50 per cent capacity of the 8,000-seat venue – once they present proof of covid19 vaccination.

With the tournament now being hosted in the SKNP backyard, Emrit remains optimistic the squad will fuse all these elements together to create a more comprehensive competitive unit.

“We (SKNP) just have to wait and see what the future holds for us. We’re playing in our backyard in St Kitts, with some supporters, so hopefully that 12th man can really push us on and we can start doing what we haven’t done in the past, which is getting titles.

"It’s good to have Dwayne around now,” Emrit continued.

The TKR statement also reaffirmed that Pollard will remain as skipper while spinner Sunil Narine will serve as vice-captain.

The statement concluded, “We welcome back Denesh Ramdin to the TKR family and look forward to the 2021 season and defending our title.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

St Kitts set to host CPL 2021 – vaccinated fans to be in attendance, all matches at Warner Park
JOEL BAILEY (T&T NEWSDAY).

THE Warner Park Stadium in Basseterre, St Kitts will be the host venue for the 2021 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

In a media briefing, via Zoom, on Tuesday morning, CEO Pete Russell and Jonel Powell, St Kitts/Nevis’ Minister of Sports, Education, Youth and Culture, said that this year’s competition is set to be the first fully vaccinated sporting tournament since the covid19 pandemic.

The 2021 CPL will start on August 28 and end in mid-September with all 33 games at Warner Park.

Powell said, “During this difficult period of the pandemic, St Kitts/Nevis understands the need to position itself in the recovery, and its importance in the relationship with the CPL and the St Kitts/Nevis Patriots. We have taken into consideration our track record in relations to the covid19 pandemic and the fact that we’ve been able to weather that storm pretty well.

“To date we’ve had 44 positive cases of covid19 with no deaths and no serious illnesses,” he continued. “We’re confident in our ability to contribute to sport and, in this regard, the CPL. (On Monday), the Cabinet of St Kitts/Nevis approved the hosting of the entire 2021 CPL tournament here, to be held at Warner Park.”

Powell said, “As of the 15th May, St Kitts/Nevis will be allowing patrons to attend all sporting events to the extent capacity of 50 per cent at venues. Those patrons will have to be fully vaccinated with an approved covid19 vaccine. This will extend to all sporting events and the CPL. We are confident we’re going to pull off this tournament in grand fashion, but in a healthy one.”

Warner Park’s official seating capacity is 8,000.

“It’s very important that the CPL takes place,” said Russell, who recently took over as CEO from Damien O’Donohoe, who left the CPL to pursue other options. “I want to (give) my personal thanks to the Minister who has worked tirelessly over the last six months to ensure that this opportunity has arisen.”

Russell continued, “We’ll have 220 people (in St Kitts), in terms of the CPL cohort. Hopefully that will be welcomed, not only by the local hoteliers but the vendors on the island. It’s very important we have a TV audience that appreciates what St Kitts has to offer because they will be the window to the world, in that period.”

Russell mentioned that the tournament will be played in a bio-secure bubble, but all players will not be mandated to take covid19 vaccines before participating in the 2021 CPL.

“It’s not a requirement that they’re vaccinated,” he said. “There are quarantine options as well.”

The 2020 CPL, which saw hosts Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) complete an unprecedented 100 per cent record, was staged at two venues – Queen’s Park Oval in St Clair and Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.

Russell said that the six CPL teams (TKR, hosts St Kitts/Nevis Patriots, Barbados Tridents, Jamaica Tallawahs, Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Lucia Zouks) will be utilising six practice facilities on the island, to avoid wear and tear at Warner Park, during the four-week-long competition.

Russell said no tendering process was held with regards to the 2021 event. “The government of St Kitts/Nevis have been in discussion with the CPL for a number of years. It’s an option that they took up.”

As far as the financial agreement between the T&T Government and CPL for the 2020 edition was concerned, Russell said, “Everything has been paid off. We’re also very grateful for Trinidad for hosting last year, in trying conditions.”

The 2021 CPL draft is expected to take place in late May, according to Russell.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

No overseas players on Tridents retained list
T&T Guardian Reports.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – No overseas players have been retained by Barbados Tridents for their upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) campaign which starts on August 28 in St Kitts and Nevis.

Neither New Zealander Mitchell Santner, who made a solid all-round impact last season, nor outstanding Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who was among the leading wicket-takers, were among the nine players retained by the Bridgetown-based franchise.

Captain Jason Holder, the former Test captain, heads the list of retained players, and has been joined by Johnson Charles, Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, Hayden Walsh Jr, Raymon Reifer, Justin Greaves, Nyeem Young and Joshua Bishop.

“We are really excited to welcome back our retained players and especially look forward to making Barbados and all Tridents’ fans very proud in our upcoming 2021 season,” said Barbados Tridents Co-chief executive, Kailash Pardasani.

“Our primary driving factor is the Barbados Tridents family which comprises our players, their extended families and all fans across the globe.

“This together with our love and passion for the game of cricket will enable us to bring the Hero CPL 2021 title back home as we did in 2019.”

Santner was one of the leading performers for Tridents in an otherwise dismal campaign for the then reigning champions, averaging 48 with the bat and finishing with six wickets at an economy rate of just over 5-½ runs per over.

Rashid Khan, meanwhile, was the leading bowler with 11 wickets at 23 runs apiece and an economy rate of nearly seven runs per over.

There was no space on the list for former West Indies left-hander Johnathan Carter or fellow Barbadian strokemaker Shamarh Brooks, who also recently lost his Cricket West Indies central retainer contract.

Veteran off-spinner Ashley Nurse, who picked up just two wickets last term, has also missed out.

Tridents won the CPL title in 2019 but struggled badly last year, winning just three matches out of ten to miss out on the playoffs.

This year’s tournament will be played in its entirety in St Kitts and Nevis, starting August 28.

Bravo gone to Patriots. Not a big loss in my opinion because he has not done much in recent years. Did not play a game last year and TKR remained undefeated to win the Championship

Rampaul picked up by TKR
T&T Guardian Reports.

Ravi Rampaul is finally back home as he has been picked by the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) for the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) which gets underway on August 28 in St Kitts and Nevis.

According to online cricket newspapers CricScope the Preysal resident has finally found favour with the TKR set up and will be leading the attack for Kieron Pollard’s men.

TKR, the most successful franchise in the history of the CPL, was able to pick up the right-arm fast bowler who had previous stints with the Jamaica Tallawahs and the Barbados Tridents. Shah Rukh Khan’s team was also able to pick up the Sri Lankan fast-bowling all-rounder Isuru Udana. Also coming into the fold is Nepal’s leg-spinner Sandeep Lamachanie.

Meanwhile, the St Lucia Zouks has pulled in South African T20 specialist Faf du Plessis as well as the Australian wicketkeeper/batsman Matthew Wade. England’s Samit Patel is also in their line-up as well as Keemo Paul who is their marquee player.

Chris Gayle, who missed the tournament last year is back and is the marquee player for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, who earlier in the month traded in Dwayne Bravo for Denesh Ramdin to the TKR.

There was talk that Andre Russell because of his links with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was moving to the TKR which is owned by the same franchise but that did not happen. He has been retained by the Jamaica Tallawahs. The Tallawahs also made a fine acquisition by bringing in the Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. T&T’s Jason Mohammed also gets a pick for the Tallawahs.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors have stayed true to experience and they are again having the Pakistani duo of Shoaib Ahmed and Mahammad Hafeez.

The CPL will be played in its entirety in St Kitts at the Warner Park in Basseterre.

TKR line-up: Keiron Pollard, Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine, Colin Munro, Darren Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Sandeep Lamachanie, Lendl Simmons, Isuru Udana, Khary Pierre, Sikandar Raza, Akeal Hosein, Anderson Phillip, Tion Webster, Ali Khan, Leonardo Julien, Jayden Seales.

Pooran to captain Guyana in CPL.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Nicholas Pooran has been named as the new captain of Guyana Amazon Warriors ahead of the CPL 2021 season. The dashing 'keeper-batsman will take over the reins from Chris Green, who has been released by the franchise. Along with Pooran, the Warriors have retained a total of 11 players from last year's squad including the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Brandon King, Imran Tahir and Naveen Ul Haq. The big missing name is Mujeeb ur Rahman - the leading wicket-taker in 2020 with 16 wickets has been ignored.

Meanwhile, Andre Russell, who had a bittersweet relationship with the Tallawahs last year where he even indicated about leaving the team at the end of the tournament, will surprisingly stay with Jamaica along with fellow local stars - Carlos Brathwaite, Rovman Powell, Chadwick Walton, Fidel Edwards and promising youngster in Ryan Persaud being the seventh player to be retained by the franchise.

Former West Indies Twenty20 captain Brathwaite, 32, who has lost his place in the international side and has not featured in nearly two years, struggled in last year’s CPL with 60 runs from nine innings while taking ten wickets with his medium pace.

However, Brathwaite flourished in the last Australian Big Bash, snaring 16 wickets from as many matches, and remains a potent player in the shortest format.

The Barbadian will be joined by West Indies superstar Russell, one of the most sought after players in franchise cricket.

Jamaican Russell, recently recalled to the West Indies side following a protracted layoff, struck three half-centuries in the last CPL campaign to finish with an average of 44.

Tallawahs have also kept faith with 39-year-old fast bowler Edwards, who was recalled by the West Indies earlier this year after nearly a decade out of international cricket.

Edwards picked up nine wickets for Tallawahs last season at an average of 25 and just over 7-½ runs per over.

However, there have been snubs for the Jamaican Test pair of Jermaine Blackwood and Nkrumah Bonner with New Zealander Glenn Phillips, who was Tallawahs’ leading batsman last year with 316 runs, also not retained.

Neither Afghan off-spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, who nabbed 16 wickets for Tallawahs last season nor Nepal leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane who snared 12 wickets, has been retained.

Rovman Powell and Chadwick Walton, both of whom endured disastrous campaigns last year, along with Guyana left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and ICC America's player Ryan Persaud, complete the list of retained players.

Two-time champions Barbados Tridents have retained skipper Jason Holder despite enduring a tough 2020 campaign where they lost 7 games and failed to qualify for the semis. Apart from Holder, Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, Raymon Reifer, Justin Greaves, Nyeem Young, Joshua Bishop, Johnson Charles and Hayden Walsh Jr are the others to have been given the contract extension.

Defending Champions Trinbago Knight Riders have parted ways with veteran Dwyane Bravo with the all-rounder being traded to St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots. They've got back Denesh Ramdin in return and overall have managed to retain the majority of the team which won them the trophy last year. Kieron Pollard will remain captain while the leading run-scorer of the previous season, Lendl Simmons, who amassed 356 runs in 11 games last season, will continue to represent the Knight Riders, in addition to other big names like Colin Munro, Sunil Narine, Darren Bravo, Sikandar Raza and Khary Pierre.

Players Retained by CPL Franchises:

St Lucia Zouks - Andre Fletcher, Kesrick Williams, Rahkeem Cornwall, Roston Chase, Obed Mccoy, Mark Deyal and Javelle Glenn.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots - Dwyane Bravo (from TKR), Evin Lewis, Fabian Allen, Sherfane Rutherford (from GAW), Sheldon Cotrell, Rayad Emrit, Jon Russ Jaggesar, Dominic Drakes, Joshua Da Silva.

Barbados Tridents - Jason Holder, Johnson Charles, Shai Hope, Kyle Mayers, Hayden Walsh JR, Raymon Reifer, Justin Greaves, Nyeem Young, Joshua Bishop.

Guyana Amazon Warriors - Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Imran Tahir, Brendon King, Naveen Ul Haq, Romario Shephard, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Odean Smith, Anthony Bramble, Kevin Sinclair, Ashmead Nedd.

Jamaica Tallawahs - Andre Russell, Carlos Brathwaite, Rovman Powell, Fidel Edwards, Veerasammy Permaul, Ryan Persaud.

Trinbago Knight Riders - Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Darren Bravo, Colin Munro, Lendl Simmons, Sikandar Raza, Khary Pierre, Anderson Phillip, Dinesh Ramdin (From St Kitts), Tion Webster, Akeal Hosein, Jayden Seales, Ali Khan.

Champs TKR opens against Guyana Warriors in CPL 2021
T&T Guardian Reports.

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will be held between August 26 and September 15, with all 33 games to be played at Warner Park in St Kitts and Nevis, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed. Last month, ESPNcricinfo had reported that CWI and the BCCI had reached an agreement for these dates following discussions about a potential clash with the second half of the IPL in September, and the consequent unavailability of West Indies' players in the IPL, as well as staff and franchise owners who are involved in both tournaments.

The CPL was originally scheduled to start on August 28, and end on September 19, but that changed after the BCCI began talks with CWI and the CPL, immediately after it identified the September-October window for wrapping up the remainder of the postponed 2021 IPL.

The tournament will now be played entirely in a double-header format, and begins with a 10am EST game between Guyana Amazon Warriors and defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders, followed by a 7pm game between Barbados Tridents and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. There will be breaks on August 30, September 3, 6 and 10, before the league stage finishes with triple-headers on September 11 and 12. The semi-finals and final will take place on September 14 and 15 respectively.

All the games will be played in just under three weeks. The challenge for both CWI and the CPL is that there aren't many free days in a packed home season. West Indies are currently playing a white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs against Australia, which will end on July 24. Three days later, the Pakistan tour kicks off with a five-match T20I series followed by two Tests, scheduled to end on August 24.

Imran Jan appointed Trinbago Knight Riders coach
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T NEWSDAY).

TRINBAGO KNIGHT Riders (TKR) have appointed Imran Jan as their coach for the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament.

This comes after coach Brendon McCullum would be unavailable for this year’s edition owing to personal reasons and other covid19 restrictions.

A statement issued by the defending CPL champions on Saturday said, “Coach Brendon McCullum is unavailable for the CPL 2021 due to personal reasons and covid19 related travel restrictions. Consequently, TKR have appointed Imran Jan as coach for CPL 2021.”

McCullum was part of the TKR squad from 2016 to 2018 during which the franchise won back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. The former New Zealand captain was appointed TKR coach in 2019 and guided the franchise to the 2020 crown.

The 42-year-old Jan, a former Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies A opening batsman and occasional off-spinner, has been an assistant coach of TKR (formerly Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel) since the tournament’s inception in 2013.

Additionally, former TT and WI leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine has joined the TKR support staff as an advisor. Ramnarine, who previously served as president of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) and chairman of the Sports Company of TT (SporTT), represented the WI in 12 Tests and four One Day Internationals between 1997 and 2002.

TKR begin their title defence against Guyana Amazon Warriors at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts on Thursday.

Guyana Amazon Warriors grab Super Over win vs TKR
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T Newsday)

GUYANA Amazon Warriors secured a nail-biting three-run Super Over victory against defending Hero Caribbean Premier League T20 champions Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) at Warner Park in St Kitts on Wednesday.

After both teams completed their respective 20-over innings on 138 runs each, TKR won the Super Over toss and sent the Warriors in to bat.

The Guyana franchise accumulated six runs in their five balls faced from spinner Sunil Narine as captain Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer perished in the decisive over. Only two wickets are allowed to fall in the Super Over.

In reply, TKR skipper Kieron Pollard and Tim Seifert attempted the chase but the former was sent packing after Romario Shepherd’s first delivery.

New batsman Colin Munro and Seifert were stifled by Shepherd’s target bowling and they were only able to secure four runs towards their target of seven, handing the GAW a well-orchestrated win.

In their opening innings, TKR were restricted to 138/9 with Munro (32) top scoring and Narine and Isuru Udana chipping in with 21 each. Mohammad Hafeez (3/18) and Shepherd (3/24) finished with the best bowling figures for the Warriors.

In reply, the Warriors fought tooth and nail to reach the small target. Needing two runs from the final ball, they could only steal one and closed the innings on 138/8, forcing the Super Over.

Both Pooran and Hetmyer top-scored for the Warriors with 27 each while eventual man of the match Rampaul bagged 4/29.

The Warriors however, still remain in third position on the table while TKR are second. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots remain unbeaten at the top with three wins in as many matches.

Summarised Scores

GUYANA AMAZON WARRIORS 138/8 – Nicholas Pooran 27, Shimron Hetmyer 27, Romario Shepherd 18; Ravi Rampaul 4/29, Sunil Narine 2/9 def. TRINBAGO KNIGHT RIDERS 138/9 – Colin Munro 32, Sunil Narine 21, Isuru Udana 21; Mohammad Hafeez 3/18, Romario Shepherd 3/24

Pollard takes full responsibility for Super Over loss against Amazon Warriors
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T Newsday)

TRINBAGO Knight Riders (TKR) skipper Kieron Pollard has taken sole responsibility for his team’s Super Over loss against Guyana Amazon Warriors at Warner Park in St Kitts on Wednesday.

The Warriors ended a two-game losing streak by powering to a nail-biting Super Over win over the defending Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 champions.

Sunil Narine bowled the Super Over for TKR and conceded just six runs from five balls as Warriors captain Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer were dismissed in the short spell. Only two wickets are allowed to fall in a Super Over.

However, Guyanese pacer Romario Shepherd was tasked with the responsibility to bowl the Warriors’ Super Over and he put on a man of the match display by restricting the 2020 winners to just four runs from his six deliveries which secured a welcome win for the Guyana franchise.

Pollard and Kiwi Tim Seifert opted to lead the TKR chase but were soon on the back foot as the skipper perished off Shepherd’s first delivery. Colin Munro joined his countryman at the crease but the New Zealand pair could only muster up four runs from the remaining five deliveries.

Defeated captain Pollard took full blame for the team loss.

“I take full responsibility for that (Super Over). Seven runs in a Super Over , we should have gotten over the line after getting that lifeline. We take that one on the chest,” he said.

The Warriors (four points) are now fourth on the CPLT20 standings with two wins from four matches while TKR (four points) are in the third position, owing to a higher net run rate, having only won two of their five matches played.

Batting first, TKR lost opening batsman Lendl Simmons for duck as he edged the ball onto his wicket after the second delivery of the innings from Chandrapaul Hemraj.

Tight bowling from Shepherd and Naveen Ul Haq saw TKR gain just nine runs from the next three overs. Ul Haq was made to pay in the fifth over as Narine smashed him for a six and four before Tion Webster ended the over with another boundary.

Mohammad Hafeez’s introduction to the attack saw him remove both Narine (21) and Webster (19) as TKR concluded the powerplay on 46/3. Hafeez and Imran Tahir slowed TKR’s progress with the bat but when Smith got his first chance with the ball, he was punished for back-to-back fours by Colin Munro. At the halfway mark, TKR stood at 70/3.

Tim Seifert (4) could only score four this time around and Pollard was unable to build any real partnership with Colin Munro (32) as the New Zealander soon perished caught by Brandon King (94/5).

Shepherd’s return to the attack reaped swift dividends as Pollard (13) also edged onto his wicket.

Two sixes and two fours from Isuru Udana helped bolster TKR’s tally but it was Shepherd who would quickly scalp the Indian pacer and Denesh Ramdin in the penultimate over to send the title-holders to 124/8 with seven balls remaining.

Khary Pierre was unable to get off the mark but Ul Haq still managed to blast a six and four off the final few balls to propel TKR to 138/9. Both Hafeez (3/18) and Shepherd (3/24) topped the bowling for the Warriors.

In their turn at the crease, in-form TKR pacer Ravi Rampaul got off to a fiery start as he removed Hemraj (6) and Smith (0) in the final two balls of the second over (7/2). He was, however, unable to secure his hat-trick from his next over.

Hetmyer and Hafeez played patiently but were kept at bay owing to good spells from Akeal Hosein and Narine. On the final ball of Pierre’s first over of the tournament, Hafeez (16) was out caught by Rampaul (40/3).

Only 13 runs came from the next three overs but Hetmyer upped the ante when he launched Pierre for two boundaries. Narine though returned and made an immediate impact by getting Shoaib Malik (14) and Hetmyer (27) out in the same over (68/5).

Skipper Pooran (27 from 15 balls) smashed two sixes and two fours before he was out caught by arguably the best catch of the tournament thus far from Hosein. Pooran’s shot was six-bound but a flying Hosein pulled off a mesmerising one-handed catch to halt the Warriors’ progress (105/7).

King perished one ball prior but Shepherd and Ul Haq teamed up to build a much-needed 26-run partnership from 12 balls to bring them within reach of the target. Needing two runs from the final delivery of the innings, Tahir was run out attempting the second, which forced the Super Over. The Warriors ended on 138/9.

Rampaul (4/29) was the pick of TKR’s bowlers while Narine (2/9) was most economical from his four overs.

Pooran was pleased with his team’s performance although he highlighted a couple of shortcomings from the batting unit.

The Warriors return to action against St Lucia Kings on Thursday from 10am followed by table leaders St Kitts and Nevis Patriots against Barbados Royals from 7pm. TKR’s next match bowls off on Sunday from 2.30pm.

Scores:

TKR 138 for nine off 20 overs (Colin Munro 32, Sunil Narine 21, Isuru Udana 21; Mohammad Hafeez 3-18, Romario Shepherd 3-24)

AMAZON WARRIORS 138 for nine off 20 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 27, Nicholas Pooran 27; Ravi Rampaul 4-29, Sunil Narine 2-9)

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

TKR top CPLT20 standings after six-wicket win over Barbados Royals
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T NEWSDAY

TRINBAGO Knight Riders (TKR) rose to the top of the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League T20 standings on Thursday after securing an important six-wicket win over Barbados Royals at Warner Park in St Kitts.

After restricting the Barbados franchise for 93/9 in the first innings, the defending champions romped to victory thanks to an unbeaten knock of 41 from Kiwi international Colin Munro.

Sent into bat, Barbados Royals had a fair start from openers Kyle Mayers (24) and Johnson Charles (14). But when Mayers departed at 24/1, the Bajan franchise began to crumble.

Wickets fell consistently owing to stellar spells from Khary Pierre (3/16), Jayden Seales (2/12) and Akeal Hosein (2/13). Sunil Narine was most expensive as he went for 30 runs from his four overs, but also picking up two wickets in the process.

Mayers topped the scoring with his early contribution while Joshua Bishop finished on an unbeaten 17.

In reply, TKR had a horror start as they lost opener Lendl Simmons to a first-ball duck. But they rallied on and chipped away at the small target to grab the win with 19 balls to spare.

Munro partnered with Darren Bravo (19) to spearhead a 39-run partnership in the middle. Bravo soon departed, alongside Tim Seifert (14), which paved the way for Munro and Akeal Hosein to lead the troops home.

This result saw TKR overtake tournament leaders St Kitts and Nevis Patriots (SKNP). SKNP are also on ten points but TKR are ahead owing to a faster net run rate.

TKR’s now gears up for a top-of-the table clash on Saturday against SKNP from 7pm.

On Thursday evening, Jamaica Tallawahs face St Lucia Kings from 7pm.

Summarised scores

TKR 99/4 (16.5) – Colin Munro 41 not out, Akeal Hosein 12 not out, Darren Bravo 19; Mohammad Amir 2/19, Joshua Bishop 2/29 defeated BARBADOS ROYALS 93/9 – Kyle Mayers 24, Joshua Bishop 17 not out, Azam Khan 17; Khary Pierre 3/16, Jayden Seales 2/12, Akeal Hosein 2/13, Sunil Narine 2/30

TKR defeat Patriots, top CPL group stage
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T NEWSDAY)

TRINBAGO KNIGHT Riders (TKR) concluded the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League T20 preliminary round with a nervy four-wicket win over St Kitts/Nevis Patriots at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts on Sunday.

TKR skipper Kieron Pollard (51) struck the franchise’s fastest half-century (50 from 20 balls) to lead the defending champions to a victorious 150/6 from 19 overs, in pursuit of the Patriots’ first innings tally of 147/ 7.

This result propelled the 2020 winners into pole position on the standings and set up a semi-final meeting with fourth-ranked St Lucia Kings on Tuesday, from 10 am. Second placed Guyana Amazon Warriors meet the Patriots in the second semi-final, also on Tuesday, from 2.30 pm.

Batting first, the Patriots had a fair start with openers Chris Gayle and youngster Joshua Da Silva in the middle.

Both batsmen hit one four each off the opening spell from Isuru Udana but big-hitter Gayle (five) was dismissed in the second over, caught behind by Denesh Ramdin off fast bowler Ravi Rampaul.

Incoming batsman Johnson Carter, who made his first appearance for the Patriots, started smoothly with back-to-back fours off left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein. Da Silva played smartly and punished Jayden Seales for a four and six in his first over.

Hosein would taste revenge in his next over as he had Charles (16) dismissed caught by Colin Munro (62/2).

In the 14th over, Da Silva flicked Ali Khan for a single to mid-wicket to post his first half-century of this year’s CPLT20. Four balls later, Khan stopped the 23-year old in his tracks as Da Silva (50) played into the hands of Rampaul (101/3).

New batsman, captain Dwayne Bravo, took some time to get going but when he did, he hammered Rampaul for two consecutive sixes, one over long-off and the other over long-on.

The next over though, Khan would bag two more in just four balls as he had Rutherford (25) and batman Fabian Allen (duck) bowled.

In the penultimate over, Udana snagged another two on his final two deliveries as Bravo (25) edged towards Seales and Dominic Drakes (one) was caught by Darren Bravo (139/7). Eight runs came from the final over as the Patriots closed on 147/7.

In their turn at the crease, TKR had a slow start but got going in the fourth over as opener Simmons (20) smashed three fours off pacer Paul van Meekeran. Fellow opener Denesh Ramdin played patiently but his partner perished in the fifth over, caught by Allen at point.

With four runs coming from the next two overs and Munro joining Ramdin in the middle, the latter punished off-spinner Jon-Russ Jagessar with two fours in three balls.

The following two overs saw Ramdin (17) bowled by leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed while Munro (nine) was out in similar fashion by Jagessar (52/3).

The pair’s exit made way for Pollard and Bravo (Darren) at the crease, chasing a tough 95 runs from the remaining 65 balls. Pollard however, made light work of the Patriots’ bowling attack and took particular liking to Jagessar’s spin.

The TKR skipper opened his account with 13 runs off Jagessar and then backed it up with 21 from his next. Darren Bravo perished in the 13th over and then Pollard fell for an impressive 51 from 22 balls (115/5).

Tim Seifert (11) soon departed at 132/6 and Udana took the reins, needing 13 runs from the final two overs, which he easily achieve blasting Jagessar for two more Hero maximums.

Topping the bowling for the Patriots was Ahmed as he picked up 2/16 from his four overs.

Summarised Scores: PATRIOTS 147-7 (20 overs) - Joshua Da Silva 50, Dwayne Bravo 25, Sherfane Rutherford 25; Ali Khan 3-19, Isuru Udana 2-28 vs TKR 150-6 (19 overs) - Kieron Pollard 51, Isuru Udana 25 not out; Fawad Ahmed 2-16. TKR won by four wickets. Man of the Match: Kieron Pollard.

I think there should be 2 more team in this league. A combines Greneda/Vincy team and add Dominica to St. Lucia. They can split the games between each island.

DJ Bravo wins fifth CPL title in historic 500th T20 match
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T NEWSDAY)

FIVE-TIME Hero Caribbean Premier League T20 title-holder Dwayne Bravo believed his youthful but experienced St Kitts and Nevis Patriots squad could go all the way to capture the coveted crown. And so they did.

At Warner Park in St Kitts on Wednesday, the Patriots won their first-ever CPLT20 trophy after securing a nail-biting three-wicket victory over St Lucia Kings in a last-ball thriller.

Batting first, the Kings piled on 159/7, led by stern knocks from Roston Chase and Rahkeem Cornwall, who both scored 43 each, and a late cameo from Keemo Paul (39).

However, an early 45-run partnership from 23-year-old Joshua da Silva (37) and Sherfane Rutherford (25) backed by a game-changing 44-run stance from Fabian Allen (20) and Dominic Drakes (48 not out) in the final overs propelled the Patriots to a nervy win.

Needing one run from the final ball of the innings, Drakes, who hit 48 from 24 balls (three sixes and three fours) braved Kesrick Williams’ final delivery by flicking the ball down the leg-side to snatch the winning run alongside 18-year-old Pakistani teammate Naseem Shah (one not out).

Although a first-time CPLT20 victory for the franchise, this was Bravo’s fifth of the nine-year tournament making him the only player to achieve such a feat. The previous times he won the crown were with the then Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel (2015) and then rebranded Trinbago Knight Riders (2017, 2018 and 2020).

This was also Bravo’s 500th T20 match of his illustrious career.

The difference this year, Bravo said, was belief and allowing youngsters to perform on the big stage.

“For me, all I ask from these guys is to back each other. It doesn’t matter whether you perform or don’t, whether you play or don’t play, let’s support each other and let’s stay together. It was all down to giving the young players the belief and the opportunity, especially Drakes,” he said.

Bravo thanked the Almighty for allowing the team to become champions. He also commended his teammates, the owners, the people of St Kitts and Nevis for their support and the island’s government for allowing fully vaccinated patrons back into the stands to witness this year’s competition.

On Drakes’ brazen display at the end, Bravo heaped praises on the 23-year-old Bajan for braving the storm and leading the team home.

During his post-match interview, the famed all-rounder said he when he held his first net session with the youngster before the start of the tourney, he told Drakes that he was one of his main players for this year’s edition.

Bravo praised his teammates.

“Evin Lewis, naming him vice-captain, taking the responsibilities and scoring the most runs for us. Sherfane Rutherford, Fabian Allen and all these guys, the overseas guys coming in, sometimes they have not played but their energy on the bench is good.

“It’s a youngish team with a couple ex-seniors but I know how much this means to guys like Sheldon Cottrell who’s been here (Patriots) for nine years, Devon Thomas six years and Evin Lewis seven years,” he added.

Bravo was beaming with joy and said he always wanted to play on the same CPL team as the “Universe Boss” Chris Gayle.

After winning the first five preliminary matches, the Patriots lost the following three, two of them at the hands of St Lucia Kings. Their final two matches of the prelims saw them bounce back to beat TKR in back-to-back matches before ousting Guyana Amazon Warriors in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Bravo credited the high level of competitiveness from all the franchises this year.

“If you look at the tournament and how close it was (competitively). From the very last game, you never knew who was going to be in the top four (prelims).

“Normally, teams fight to get into the top two but we didn’t need to be in the top two, but the top four. And a final coming down to the last ball, this is what the fans wanted and this is what people want,” he said.

Additionally, this was the second time Bravo and Patriots coach Simon Helmot lifted the title together. Helmot was coach of the TT Red Steel when the franchise won their first CPLT20 title six years ago with Bravo as captain.

In May, Bravo shocked TKR fans when he was traded to the Patriots in exchange for wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin. He said he made such a move to challenge himself and help the franchise improve.

This win for the St Kitts and Nevis franchise, he said, is just as special as the previous four won with the TT franchise.

“I cannot ask for a different challenge. I challenged myself to come here to see if I could do something different with a new team and I’m very happy.

“I think this (title win) will be right up there (with the rest) even though I won a lot.

This one will be special because it’s a new franchise out of my comfort zone. Coming here, not knowing what to expect, I think this (win) is maybe in the top three,” he added.

This was also the second consecutive year that St Lucia Kings finished as runners-up. Last year, they lost out to TKR in the final.

Additionally, Chase was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament having scored 446 runs (four half-centuries and a strike rate of near 150), bagged ten wickets and taken seven catches. Lewis also captured the Hero Maximum winner as he led the competition with 38 sixes.

Summarised Scores

ST KITTS & NEVIS PATRIOTS 160/7 – Dominic Drakes 48, Joshua Da Silva 37, Sherfane Rutherford 25, Fabian Allen 20; Wahab Riaz 2/36 defeated ST LUCIA KINGS 159/7 – Roston Chase 43, Rahkeem Cornwall 43, Keemp Paul 39; Naseem Shah 2/26, Fawad Ahmed 2/32.
