Unified Football Coaches adopt new constitution
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

THE UNIFIED Football Coaches of Trinidad and Tobago (UFCTT) have adopted and ratified its new constitution, “in keeping with our ambition to build an organisation with accountability and transparency entrenched in its foundation.”

This move took place on August 15 and all members have been given access to the document “so roles, responsibilities and general expectations will be clearly defined.”

According to a media release, “We will ensure the public also has access to the constitution so they will be able to objectively access the association’s progress.” The UFCTT is eager to have a fully operational organisation, with complete executive and standing committees, as mandated, by the constitution.

The current executive includes Jefferson George (president), Wayne Sheppard (first vice-president), Rayshawn Mars (general secretary), Johan Contaste (assistant secretary), Curtis Orr (treasurer), James Saunders (media officer), Justin Reid (public relations officer).

Unified Football Coaches announces Sagicor deal
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

THE UNIFIED Football Coaches of Trinidad and Tobago (UFCTT) announced a partnership with top insurance company Sagicor, during a Zoom media conference on Thursday.

This move provides, for the first time, group medical and accidental death and dismemberment insurance for local coaches.

Interim president Jefferson George said such a facility was long overdue.

“Coaches have been vulnerable and have not had good coverage. Players would have had very significant coverage. It’s our aim and interest to make sure that we look after the welfare of all our members,” said George.

Branch manager of Sagicor, Christopher Gouveia, said this move is a step in the right direction.

“I wish to congratulate the coaches of this newly-minted association for having the keen foresight to establish representation, and for having a body that can collectively speak to the needs of football coaches across Trinidad and Tobago,” Gouveia said.

Currently, the UFCTT has over 130 applications for membership and is in discussion with the Tobago Football Association to have them represented under its umbrella. The plan will be a yearly subscription, exclusively to financial members of the governing body.

UFCTT, NACTM in partnership deal

UFCTT, NACTM in partnership deal
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

A partnership set to create opportunities for footballers and coaches to ply their trade in the US market in the coming years was formed between the Unified Football Coaches of T&T (UFCTT) and the North American, Caribbean Training Methods (NACTM).

The deal was only announced on Wednesday at a virtual press briefing but it has been ongoing for months now, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the initial launch in March 2020.

But at its launch earlier this year, some seven cities in the United States including Baltimore, Washington DC and Orlando, among others were beneficiaries of football camps aimed at ensuring coaches' education and opportunities.

Johann Contaste, an 'A' License coach at the camps, assured that with the 2026 World Cup to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as the merger between the Mexican La Liga and the Major League Soccer (MLS) tournament in that region in 2023, his aim is to have about 250 coaches under the guidance and mentorship of US Soccer and their coaching education pathway.

"My main focus in terms of the partnership is coaching education. What we have done is we have launched a grassroots coaching license. US soccer, because of COVID-19, has two grassroots courses, an in-person course and one that you can complete online.

"So while that is available we're getting as many coaches in Trinidad, as much as possible, licensed as grassroots coaches and what that is going to enable is for those grassroots coaches to get opportunities through the NACTM for our summer camps."

According to Contaste: "We're in a partnership with the UFCTT and grassroots network in Trinidad and so far we have about 25 coaches that are in the process of completing their grassroots license in the US Coaching Education pathway. So currently we have between 25 and 30 coaches registered with a profile that I am currently mentoring through their grassroots license, so I think it is very important for me to provide opportunities for coaches in Trinidad because of the accessibility to the US market.

"You know most of us, have friends and families over here. With the World Cup coming up in 2026, as well as in 2023, the merger of the Mexican La Liga and the MLS who are joining up to create more opportunities for clubs in the Caribbean and in our region for players to play football at the highest level, as well as the Women's Professional League and their second tier. They're going to merge to create a bigger league, so it will be more opportunities for women footballers as well."

Justin Reid, another coach at the camp with T&T parentage, said he has been following the UCFTT ever since it was formed and applauds the efforts.

"You have to unify the coaches, you have got to bring them together in order to build up football in the country," Reid said.

Meanwhile, Jefferson George, president of the UFCTT said he is just excited about the partnership and what it will do for coaches in T&T.

Unified Football Coaches of T&T joins forces with US-based programme

Unified Football Coaches of T&T joins forces with US-based programme
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday)

THE Unified Football Coaches of T&T (UFCTT) has joined forces with the North American Caribbean Training Method (NACTM) to allow local football coaches and players to develop their skills.

Members of both the UFCTT and the NACTM gave details of the partnership on Zoom, on Wednesday.

The interim president of the UFCTT Jefferson George said, “We are really excited that the Unified Football Coaches of T&T can welcome onboard a new partner to bring tremendous value and experience to coaches of T&T and all those who will be members.”

Local coaches and junior players will be avoided the opportunity to travel to the US to participate in training camps. Coaches must be members of the UFCTT to be involved in NACTM programmes.

Johann Contaste of the NACTM said, “My main focus for the partnership is coaching education and what we have done is we have launched a grassroots coaching license.”

Contaste said several T&T coaches have already been taking advantage of these courses.

“What that is going to enable is that those grassroots coaches will now get opportunities through the North American Caribbean Training Method through our summer camps.”

Contaste said 25 local coaches are in the process of earning their grassroots license.

Justin Reid, also of NACTM, said former T&T footballer Abiola Clarence was involved in two of the recently held camps.

“Abiola came up this summer and he did both the Washington DC camp and Baltimore camp with me. He was just a great asset, the kids loved him…we want to provide that opportunity for a lot more coaches in T&T to come up.”

Reid said local coaches who visit the US will be provided ground transportation and will be paid approximately $500 - $600 US per week.

Reid said it would be ideal for T&T coaches to stay with family members who are close to training camps. Some of the courses available for coaches in the programme are the Rising Stars programme and the Next Generation programme.

Reid said players who feature in the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) can take short trips to the US which will be an opportunity for them to get recognised.

“Once things kind of open up in T&T and open up here in the US we could get some kids who play in the SSFL, who are doing extremely well, to come on over for a week or weekend and get identified.”

Reid said former Presentation College, San Fernando player Jaiye Sheppard was accepted into a university through NACTM connections.

One course is also geared towards improving the goal-scoring ability of strikers. People can visit nactmsoccercamps.com for more information.

UFCTT made to wait to rejoiun TTFA
T&T Guardian Reports.

PHOTO: ANTHONY HARRIS.

Jefferson George, president of the Unified Football Coaches of T&T (UFCTT) says he is a little bit disappointed but at the same time understands the delay in the organisation’s admission to the T&T Football Association (TTFA) membership at their annual general meeting (AGM) held on Sunday.

The AGM was attended by most of the TTFA membership and chaired by the Fifa-led Normalisation Committee chairman Robert Hadad who addressed many of the challenges that the TTFA is faced with.

While most of the issues raised were addressed, three items on the agenda were left unresolved and are to be discussed when an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) is reconvened in 14 days time.

They include the approval of the audited financial statements for the year ended 31st December 2019; expulsion of the Coaches Association, and admission for membership of the Unified Football Coaches of T&T application.

At the AGM which was held virtually, it was determined that these items will be tabled at an EGM to be held on October 13, inclusive of the 2019 audited financial statements which are still to be approved.

During the 2018 AGM, the TTFA Membership attempted to expel the Coaches Associations from the Membership based on inactivity/dormancy. However, this motion was not properly executed as per the TTFA Constitution, and will now be addressed at the upcoming EGM."

At an Extraordinary General Meeting on April 21, 2018, that was called by the March 2018 AGM, the Coaches Association was among 21 members that faced sanctions for alleged non-compliance. However, only those two members were expelled according to the meeting Minutes via a vote of 18-9. Osmond Downer moved a motion that was seconded by Anthony Harford to expelled both the Coaches Association and Players Association for:

The minutes stated: "The above two (2) associations had not submitted any documents to fulfil TTFA's compliance policy, and there were no representatives to speak on their behalf. It was felt that due to non-activities of the two associations, they should be expelled from the TTFA."

Commenting on the last Sunday’s proceedings George, a former youth goalkeeper said he was a little bit disappointed that they were not approved as members at the AGM, but at the same time understood the reasons why.

George said that at present they have no fewer than 136 applications to join the UFCTT. “I’m disappointed because we have to wait for the EGM to take place in the next 14 days and we expect to be fully admitted then. At the same time, we also understand that for us to move forward together at the end of the day everybody has to do better."

Looking ahead to the EGM, George told Guardian Media Sports on Monday: “For us, we see no hiccup in being admitted by the TTFA as we have everything in place that is requested of us based on the constitution and we are a fully functional body. But in fairness to the decisions makers on the weekend we do understand that we cannot operate or co-exist at the same time as the previous coaching body which is non-functional and we must first wait for it to be officially defunct before we can be admitted."

Sunday’s AGM was attended by 40 out of the 47 delegates that were eligible to vote at the meeting of the general membership but TTFA acting general secretary Amiel Mohammed said 37 was present to acknowledge the roll call and constituted a quorum.

Also present was FIFA Director of Member Associations for the Americas - Jair Bertoni, CONCACAF Chief Officer, Member Associations - Marco Leal, FIFA Member Associations Governance Manager - Sofia Malizia and Caribbean Football Union General Secretary – Camara David.

The UFCTT constitution was adopted and ratified by an EGM of its members on Sunday, August 15, 2021, and was drafted by Osmond Downer, president of the T&T Football Referees Association, who is also responsible for drafting the existing TTFA constitution.

Other members of UFCTT includes Wayne Sheppard (first vice-president), Rayshawn Mars (general secretary), Johan Contaste (assistant secretary), Curtis Orr (treasurer), James Saunders (media officer), and Justin Reid (public relations officer).

George: UFCTT ready to move T&T football forward
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian)

Jefferson George, president of the Unified Football Coaches of T&T (UFCTT), says he is happy that the organisation has been finally admitted to the T&T Football Association (TTFA).

Having had a decision on their application delayed at last month’s annual general meeting (AGM), the UFCTT was admitted as a member of the TTFA at its Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held virtually on Sunday.

Commenting on the Sunday’s process, George explained that it was just a matter of formalities with regards to the UFCTT’s admittance as part of the local football body.

He added, “The only issue that came up really was with the expulsion of the old Coaches Association and if it was really required because to be honest they are non-existent.

“At the end of the day we are very happy to be part of the TTFA and looking forward to working with all other members and playing our role in moving T&T football forward,” said George, a former national youth goalkeeper.

During the 2018 AGM, the TTFA Membership attempted to expel the Coaches Associations from the membership based on inactivity/dormancy.

However, this motion was not properly executed as per the TTFA constitution, and was deferred to Sunday’s EGM.

At present, the UFCTT has no fewer than 136 applications while its constitution was adopted and ratified by an EGM of its members on Sunday, August 15, 2021.

It was was drafted by Osmond Downer, president of the T&T Football Referees Association, who is also responsible for drafting the existing T&TFA constitution.

Other members of UFCTT includes Wayne Sheppard (first vice-president), Rayshawn Mars (general secretary), Johan Contaste (assistant secretary), Curtis Orr (treasurer), James Saunders (media officer), and Justin Reid (public relations officer).

In addition to the expulsion of the Coaches Association and admittance of the UFCTT to the TTFA, the other issue that was discussed at Sunday’s EGM was the approval of the audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2019.

Footballers, coaches, stakeholders to protest no-football tomorrow.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

Fed-up of being denied the opportunity to play football, a group of players, coaches and other football officials will take to the streets of Port-of-Spain, including at the office of Minister of Sports and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe on Thursday morning, to air their concerns on why football is not being played.

The group is being led by Jefferson George, president of the Unified Football Coaches of T&T and Michael De Four, coach of Cunupia FC and others, calling themselves concerned citizens of football.

Knowing about the limitations to protest or march, the group has printed jerseys they believe will help convey their message. The group will assemble at a meeting point in the capital city on Thursday morning and will parade throughout the streets, focuing on several Ministries, De Four said yesterday.

Their concerns stem from a written request made by the Ascension Football Tournament of T&T to Minister of Health Terrance Deyalsingh, asking for permission to host its football competition.

The request was supported by a list of some 30 COVID-19 guidelines to be followed by all, to ensure the safety and protection of all involved, either taking part in the games, officiating, or supporting.

However, Deyalsingh in a written response a few days later blanked the tournament, based on the current delta variant which has been sweeping through communities in T&T.

Following an announcement by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to ‘vaccinate to operate’ a few months ago, it was further announced that restaurants, bars and casinos were also opened within the limitations of safe zones.

De Four insisted that his members are not into the business of breaking the laws, hence why they’re not playing football although the sport is allegedly going on at different locations across the country.

He said: “We’re in a state of disarray when the government could announce that fully vaccinated and you can drink alcohol in safe zones, and the same thing applies to go in the casinos, and we are fully vaccinated, referees and everybody but you’re saying no.

"You said, 'vaccinate to operate', that was a government slogan, but here it is an entity, is saying hey, everybody has been vaccinated and we’re ready to go, and you’re telling them no. So, we have a little issue with that, because the less we play football, the more the industry crumbles and crumbles, making it more difficult to recover from where we were, or attaining the goals we would like to attain.”

Not much will be said during the walk, with the hope that as people (players/coaches etc) following the call to be vaccinated to operate, that the message will be sent loud and clear to the powers that be.

“We will be marching through Port-of-Spain, we’re going to touch one or two ministries. Of course, the Ministry of Sports must get in touch, but we will pass around it and then come back down the road during a peaceful walk.

"I think it will be a combination of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Sports. I will not be able to call out all the ministries, although I would like the ministers and the sports minister to show some compassion towards the sports fraternity and work with us as sports enthusiasts, at least to overcome this hurdle," De Four said.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
