Atlético Ottawa forward Malcolm Shaw has been named to the 2021 Canadian Premier League's Team of the Week (#12).

After scoring his seventh goal of the season on Saturday, One Soccer asked if Shaw was the quietest goalscoring threat in the league and it is a really good question. Lost in what has been a difficult season in the nation’s capital has been Shaw’s ability to come alive in the penalty area, show terrific calmness and showcase his finishing ability with either feet. The 26-year-old from Toronto now has six goals in his last 10 matches with very few opportunities coming his way.

I believe he believes that the foreign born players do not bring any major advantage in skill than what he sees locally. So he primarily gives the local players a nod. What he doesn’t see and he himself has lost touch with, is the experience and level of professionalism that the foreign born national representatives acquire from training, playing in a larger , more competitive environmental football pool.
Something that may not be evident in a step1- camp or trial setting, but actually readily on display in an actual meaningful game. Unfortunately, very difficult to get past step 1.

if someone is unaware of something they are ignorant of or make choices based on the only information they have, sometimes based on what is in front of them and/or presented with (camp), one shouldn’t accuse them of being ‘Bias’. Given his position we hope sooner than later he is eventually blessed with the vision that will increase his - and ours - chances of success. We really don’t know if alternate choices would or would not ensure success. No matter what some of us believe. 🙏

Speaking of which...with no local football on the horizon, the team for the Nations League games in March will have to be strictly foreign-based.

I agree, note, I know he is aware of the players, but he is unaware of what they can bring. Usually, that's what there are exhibition games and scouting is for. Yet in those vvery few games they are rarely given a full runout. Something that I think TF tried, against the wrong team and obviously limited instructions. We shouldn't have a totally foreign, but a couple in key positions and involved in training may prove to be encouraging, developmental and beneficial. Yet, these days there is very little opportunity for anything of the sort, not only financially - it cost to invite a trialist even if previously scouted -  but just to attract the quality available few for a few days prior and away from their club. If they that good the club rarely cares to release. Many might be of the opinion that even if invited, it's for practice fodder.

Fyzo, not necessarily, the Ntl prospects are probably training and would be scrimmaging. besides the finance issues.

Regardless of what, I hope the best Team is selected and Eve is successful in his decisions, choices and charges. Everything learns and adapts, most of the time. :D

Malcolm Shaw earns first international call-up for Trinidad and Tobago friendlies in June
atleticoottawa.canpl.ca

Atlético Ottawa forward Malcolm Shaw has been selected as part of the preliminary Trinidad and Tobago squad ahead of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Shaw has established himself as one of the most well-known names since joining Atlético Ottawa in 2020 and the 27-year-old revealed that joining the club played a big part in opening the door for this opportunity.

“It’s been about two years [since 2021] now,” Shaw said. “It’s something I really wanted to do, to get eyes on me and I think over the course of the last couple of seasons, since joining Atlético I’ve been able to do that. I’m really happy that it’s been noticed and I’m being rewarded.”

Atlético’s all-time top scorer had a break-out season in 2021, scoring 10 goals and providing one assist during a turbulent campaign for the Rojiblancos. Shaw was deployed in various opposition across the pitch but always looked sharp when in front of goal.

Shaw, who qualifies to play for Trinidad and Tobago through his mother, went on to say: “It’s a big step and a new step in my career, getting the opportunity to play internationally. I’m ready to show myself and really prove myself at this new level.

“My parents are really happy, and my Mum is ecstatic – it’s her country after all! The whole family is really happy for me and I’m fortunate to have that kind of support.”

Ottawa’s number 19 will meet up with Angus Eve and the rest of the Trinidad and Tobago squad ahead of their friendlies later this month as they seek to qualify for the Gold Cup and with a personal challenge of “being involved long term” for Shaw.

Atlético Ottawa star Malcolm Shaw cuts a striking figure on and off the field
By Ken Warren (Ottawa Sun)

To escape the pressures of playing professional sports, some athletes turn to golfing, the guitar or maybe even cooking.

Atlético Ottawa star striker Malcolm Shaw has gone in a different direction altogether when he’s not filling the net with soccer balls.

The club’s all-time leading scorer is at home with scissors and razors in his hands, regularly kicking back by cutting hair.

In what might have worked perfectly for a Ted Lasso episode, Shaw routinely styles the locks of Atlético teammates after practice. He has even taken to working at King of Cuts, a barbershop near the St. Laurent Shopping Centre, on his days off.

“It’s something that I can occupy my mind with,” Shaw said earlier this week, beginning work on a tidy cut for midfielder Aboubakary Sacko outside Atlético’s dressing room. “Playing professional football, sometimes that can consume you a lot. Just to be able to get away from it and just do something else, it’s something I enjoy. I make a little money on the side, nothing crazy, but it’s more for the enjoyment of doing it.”

He first took an interest in the hobby when his mother, Zenovia, was cutting his hair during elementary school. The fascination grew from there.

“I wanted to see if I could do it myself,” he said, as he snipped Sacko’s sideburns. “I started doing my edges when I was really young. In the early stages of high school, I would dabble a little bit and then I really started taking it seriously once I went to university (Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester). I would cut my friends hair. I watched a ton of videos on You Tube to learn the skills.”

Shaw, a 27-year-old Pickering native, is the lone remaining player from Atlético’s debut season in 2020 and has plenty of balls in the air as he juggles the work/life balance.

He scored his 16th goal in an Atlético uniform in last Saturday’s 2-0 win over Halifax, a game he hopes will help turn the tide after the club’s slow start to the Canadian Premier League season. Atlético has a record of two wins, four losses and two draws, sitting sixth in the eight-team CPL.

Following Friday’s road game against York, Shaw will also be taking on a new soccer challenge, playing for Trinidad and Tobago in a Sunday friendly against Guatemala in Pennsylvania. Shaw’s mother was born in Trinidad and he owns dual citizenship.

“I always had aspirations of competing internationally,” Shaw said as he carefully sliced away some of Sacko’s mustache hairs. “I spent the last two years trying to get on the radar. I got some background from (Trinidad native) Ryan Telfer, who played for Atlético in 2021.

“I’ve watched them, but I’m not totally immersed with them yet. I got some insight from (Telfer) and others who played there. International football is a privilege, playing against the best players from their respective countries is very unique. It’s definitely a big challenge.”

How long he stays with the national team is still up in the air, but Shaw could also play in the Concacaf Gold Cup qualifier June 16 against Guadeloupe.

It’s a longshot, but Trinidad and Tobago — currently ranked 104th in the FIFA rankings — has a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup that will be jointly held in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Shaw isn’t getting ahead of himself, of course, but it would be a dream scenario if he ever got a shot of playing in the World Cup. Maybe even on Canadian soil, where he says he first started thinking of making a career out of the game when he was nine years old.

“I just want to continue to improve as a player and play at as high a level as I possibly can,” he said, carefully cutting a few more millimetres off the top of Sacko’s hair. “Internationally, I want to be part of the national program as long as I can.”

Shaw feels fortunate about the way soccer, and life in general, has fallen into place for him.

After his NCAA career ended, Shaw went to Sweden in 2018 and 2019 to begin his pro career, starting out in a lower level. COVID-19 entered the picture in 2020, when his plans to play in a top-tier Sweden league and then with a United Soccer League squad in Nebraska went out the window because of travel restrictions.

Shaw was then pleasantly surprised when Atlético, in its debut season in the CPL, came calling. The only games in 2020 were at a bubble tournament in Prince Edward Island and Shaw scored twice in seven games. In 2021, he netted 10 goals in 28 games and had three more in 22 games in 2022.

“Ottawa came calling and I had a two-week trial,” he said. “The rest is history. It was great, definitely, how the opportunity came along. Having nothing and getting to play at home. It’s awesome.”

As for sticking with his hair-cutting hobby, he can thank a close friend for staying cool years ago when he once accidentally came a little too close.

“Funny story,” Shaw said as Sacko raised his eyebrows slightly. “He liked a high top fade with an afro on top, so he just wanted me to cut it down a little bit. When you’re cutting hair, you use different guards to take off different amounts of hair. Crazy enough, the guard fell off and I accidentally patched his hair. That had never happened before. I didn’t know how to break the news to him.”

Fortunately, Shaw says, “we had a close enough relationship that he worked with it” and they both moved on.

Providing he stays healthy, Shaw hopes to keep playing professionally into his early to mid 30’s, but he also prides himself on being well rounded, with numerous passions that he might take up following retirement.

“Who knows if maybe I want to do a little coaching, with some barbering on the side? We’ll see what the future holds. I’m not stressed about it.”

Shaw: Reggae Boyz defeat a tough loss.
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian).

Canadian-born T&T striker 27-year-old Malcolm Shaw said the Soca Warriors' 4-1 loss to Jamaica in their second Group A match of the Concacaf Gold Cup at City Park Stadium Saint Louis, Missouri, USA on Wednesday night was a tough loss for the team.

For the Reggae Boyz, England-based winger Demarai Gray scored in the 14th and 30th minutes while another English-based player Leon Bailey was also on target in the 18th as they stormed into an early 3-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes.

Canada-based midfielder Andre Rampersad pulled a goal back for T&T in the 49th with a clever back-heel from a right-sided Levi Garcia center but two minutes into added-on time, Jamaica got a fourth item via a shot from Chelsea FC new-boy Dujuan Richards, 17, which deflected off T&T defender Kareem Moses and wrong-footed goalkeeper Nicklas Frenderup.

The win was Jamaica's first in 12 matches and the first in three matches against T&T, who suffered a first defeat in eight matches.

Speaking after the defeat, Shaw who made his debut in the 3-0 win over St Kitts and Nevis and had a goal chalked for a shove on a defender before earning his first start in the loss to the Reggae Boyz said, “Obviously, it was a tough result for us. Jamaica is a quality side and has a very good front three but we just have to look to the next game.”

The Atletico Ottawa striker was quick to admit that the team has some work to do ahead of the next match, a must-win contest against defending champion and host USA, improved on its come-from-behind 1-1 draw with Jamaica on Saturday by trashing St Kitts and Nevis 6-0 to go top of the group on goal-difference from the Reggae Boyz, with both teams on four points each.

Shaw, who qualified to represent T&T through his mother said, “We have some things we have to adjust and fix and we tried some new things against Jamaica but things didn’t go our way tonight (Wednesday)."

Reflecting on the first-half performance from the team, Shaw said, “We were a bit lethargic and a bit slow and disjointed too, and obviously Jamaica with their quality, they were able to play through us at times and play over the top, and they were clinical on the chances that they created, so we have to be more compact and be more solid in our shape.”

Comparing the performance of the team in the first half to that of the second half, Shaw admitted that the substitutions made a big impact.

“The subs that came in, they made a solid impact and I thought they came in and we went back to the usual shape that we started with against St Kitts and Nevis and I think that helped us a bit in getting back to some familiarity, and the guys that came in definitely put in a decent shift and we were able to get a goal back but obviously it wasn’t enough.”

Having to adjust his game to coach Eve’s tactics, Shaw said, “For me, it felt a bit frustrating as I felt like I wasn’t getting into the groove that I wanted to help the team.

“At times, I tried to show in the pockets and the ball wouldn’t come, or I would be in positions but I tried to just put in a shift to the best I could."

Looking ahead to the must-win match against the USA on Sunday (July 2) at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte from 7 pm, Shaw said the team has the talent to accomplish their goal.

“We just have to go out there and fight and put in a mature performance and really step up because it’s do-or-die for us, so obviously everyone has to come out guns blazing and we have to be organised and deliver and we have the talent to do it,” said Shaw.

Warrior Profile: Malcolm Shaw keen to repay faith in him
By David Scarlett (T&T Newsday)

ALTHOUGH he is fairly new to the national set-up, Malcolm Shaw has proven himself a fervent Soca Warrior. With five games under his belt, and some valuable experience from last summer's Concacaf Gold Cup, he is eager to give more to the nation he adores.

Shaw, 28, was born and raised in Canada, but is eligible to play for T&T as he has a Trinidadian mother. His youth career was spent at Pickering Football Club and Power Soccer Academy before playing for Roberts Wesleyan College in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division Two – where he was developed as a mobile and goal-poaching striker.

He also represented his university in athletics as a javelin athlete, finishing 15th in the 2016 NCAA Division Two Championships.

His first professional contract came in 2017 with Erie Commodores FC, in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). He then had a two-year spell in Sweden before returning to Canada to play for his current club, Atletico Ottowa.

Since signing for Ottowa, Shaw has netted 16 goals and registered five assists in the Canadian Premier League. His poaching abilities and eye for goal caught the attention of Warriors head coach Angus Eve, and he was called up to the T&T team for the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign. He made his debut as a substitute in T&T’s 3-0 win against St Kitts and Nevis and found the back of the net in the second half, only for the referee to curb his celebration for a foul on the defender.

In an interview with Newsday, Shaw expressed his delight in representing his mother’s birth country.

“The experience of playing for T&T has been a great experience. It’s always an honour to represent this nation. “T&T is my first international footballing experience. I've been knocking on the door since 2021 – I’ve always wanted to get a chance at representing Trinidad.

“My mother played a big role in my passport process. (Soca Warrior) Ryan Telfer (born in Canada to Trini parents) also put in a word for me.”

Shaw also expressed his gratitude to Eve for “seeing something” in him and giving him the opportunity to play at international level. He said he enjoys a good relationship with his coach.

Despite a disappointing Gold Cup campaign, the Soca Warriors have undoubtedly improved – now boasting two wins from two matches in the Concacaf Nations League. There have been a number of changes from the Gold Cup squad, and Shaw said, “The new team is full of guys that are hungry, humble and willing to fight for one another on the pitch.

"The unit feels more like a cohesive one – we all buy in.”

Off the pitch, in addition to his footballing career, Shaw works part-time as a barber.

“Yes, I do cut hair on the side. I like to occupy some spare time cutting hair, as it’s something I enjoy doing. I have been doing it for a while now…since high school.”

Culturally, having a Trinidadian mother, Shaw gracefully embraces his Trini side. He also grew up around Trinidadian relatives who immersed him in T&T's culture and values.

For the Soca Warriors, all eyes were on the previously unknown Shaw, who went scoreless in three Gold Cup matches and the opening match of the Nations League against Curacao. However, his determination to get on the scoresheet earned him a penalty in T&T’s second Nations League fixture in El Salvador, which he took himself and scored.

“It was a relief to score my first goal in a big game,” he said. “I had two other goals that were (disallowed) in the previous four games, which I felt were wrong calls. But I’m glad to have got my first and I’m looking to add more to my tally.”

Shaw aims to help the Soca Warriors qualify for the “big tournaments” and continue climbing the FIFA world rankings – having moved from 102 to 98 in the latest update.

With T&T currently leading the Group A standings in the Nations League, the Warriors are in pole position to qualify for the quarterfinals and advance to the 2024 Conmebol Copa America, with the possibility of facing countries like world champions Argentina and Brazil.

He's also optimistic that TT will be strongly battling for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Shaw has a message to Soca Warrior fans in T&T and across the globe: “Your support is crucial for us. We are working hard and fighting together to rebuild consistency and reach success. It’s a process. Stick with us!”
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Soca Warrior Malcolm Shaw: 'Football is won on the day'.
By Roneil Walcott (T&T Newsday).

Soca Warriors' Canada-based striker Malcolm Shaw says he is ready to fight for the red, white and black as T&T look ahead to their Concacaf Nations League A home-and-away quarter-final tie against the US on November 16 and 20.

Shaw, 28, is returning to the T&T squad after missing the last two games in the 2023/24 Nations League A group stage against Guatemala and Curacao with an injury. T&T will be on the road for the first leg when they play the US at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas on November 16, before hosting the Concacaf giants four days later at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo in an 8 pm kickoff. Shaw, who debuted for T&T in this year's Concacaf Gold Cup, says the Warriors are up to the task ahead.

"The US are decorated with players who are in top leagues overseas. But football is won on the day and we're going to come and fight," Shaw told TT Football Association (TTFA) media.

"I feel good. It was unfortunate for me to miss out in the last two matches due to injury. I'm glad to be back with the team to help contribute and fight in these two massive games against a big team. This is going to be a massive challenge."

At the Gold Cup, Shaw featured in T&T's humiliating 6-0 loss to the US which knocked the Warriors out of the group stage.

Shaw says the team's self-introspection is well underway.

"We have to do a lot of film study to evaluate where we went wrong (in the Gold Cup game versus the US). Obviously, we don't want those breakdowns happening in the next two games. Again, I think that's what we will be doing for the next week or so with preparations."

Shaw and T&T quickly put the Gold Cup disappointment behind them as they rattled off wins over Curacao and El Salvador in their opening Nations League A group matches, with Shaw registering his first T&T goal away to El Salvador with a well-taken penalty.

Shaw missed the next two matches but T&T were able to secure a spot in the Nations League A quarter-finals after a dramatic 3-2 win over Guatemala and a surprise 5-3 loss away to Curacao.

The Atletico Ottawa player is now back in the Soca Warriors mix and will be vying to be in the final squad which will be announced by coach Angus Eve on Sunday.

In a social media post on Wednesday, the TTFA indicated limited early bird tickets for the November 20 return leg will be available for $100 (covered section) and $50 (uncovered section).

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
