Trinidad and Tobago to play in 2022 King's Cup in Thailand
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Men’s Team will join host nation Thailand at the King’ Cup 2022 in Chiang Mai province, Thailand from September 22-25.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association accepted the invitation from the Thailand FA this week. This will be T&T’s third visit to Thailand for international friendlies, having visited in 2004 and 2018, losing to the hosts 3-2 and 1-0 respectively. Current head coach Angus Eve was the captain of the 2004 squad under then head coach Bertille St Clair.

The King’s Cup 2022 has confirmed three other teams taking part in the competition including hosts Thailand, Malaysia and Tajikistan.

The matches will be played on September 22nd and 25th, within the FIFA Window and a draw will take place to determine the fixtures.

In the last King’s Cup held in 2019, the Curacao team was invited to participate with the Vietnamese and Indian teams. In that tournament, Curacao won the championship with a victory over the Vietnamese team in the final.

In a response to the fixtures, head coach Eve told TTFA Media, “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to get two international fixtures away from home during the FIFA Window. Again, this is a continuation of our process towards getting the best possible team for the future which includes not just the Gold Cup 2023 and the next phase of Nations League matches but also the 2026 World Cup qualification.

“We are coming off a good run in the Concacaf Nations League with three consecutive victories and we will be looking to build on this in these upcoming matches during the September window. I’d like to say thank you the Thailand FA for reaching out to us to offer this invitation and to the Normalisation Committee and the TTFA for accepting and confirming all arrangements to ensure we are active in this upcoming FIFA Window” Eve said.

The Senior Men’s Team preparations for these matches will commence within the next few weeks before Eve announces a Final Squad to travel to Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai is approximately 90 minutes by flight from Bangkok and while it is on the warm side, it’s considerably cooler than Bangkok. It’s situated in the mountains at a high altitude, so temperatures are much more bearable than other Thai cities on the southern end of the country.

Thailand lost to Uzbekistan 2-0 in its last international match, an Asian Cup qualifier in June. Among its wins this year were a 2-1 win over Bahrain in a friendly in May and a 1-0 win over Suriname in March.

Chiang Mai is known for its rich history as the principal city of the ancient Lanna Kingdom. The Lanna Kingdom, which was especially prevalent between the 1200s all the way up until the mid-1800s, was spread across northern Thailand, and Chiang Mai is host to countless ancient relics of this kingdom and the Karen Hill tribes Temples, most of which are in a unique Burmese style of architecture, speckle the city, and there are countless other attractions to visit and behold from this once-great empire.

Molino, Fortune return to T&T team.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

Eve faces funding challenge ahead of King’s Cup

National coach Angus Eve is facing a challenging time ahead of the King’s Cup in Thailand at the end of the month in Chiang Mai province.

Issues of funding and players’ readiness have been at the forefront of Eve’s mind as the team gears up to face Thailand, Malaysia and Tajikistan in a four-nation tournament from September 22-25 within the FIFA Window.

Speaking to the media via a release on Thursday night, Eve said the team may even have to be cut to suit the funding available to them.

“It’s been very difficult to be very honest, the state of affairs in the FA from a financial standpoint. The challenges we have is mainly financial, to keep camps, to keep the locally-based players going because as you know, they’re not in season, so it’s very difficult for them and when we get engagements it’s very difficult for us to select them because, although they may be doing their little gym work, they’re not match-fit to play international football at this point in time.

“So from that standpoint it is very challenging, but again, I am not one to make a lot of excuses so we tend to soldier on with the facilities afforded to us,” said Eve.

“It’s difficult for the local players, I played for most of my career here I want to emphasize that, but they’re not playing at this point in time at any competition, so it’s very difficult to select those guys. But we have guys abroad, we have some guys in Europe and the majority of the guys are in the US. It’s a challenge because the US Leagues don’t stop and some of the boys have play-offs so we can’t risk some of them not signing contracts with their teams.

“Most of them get 12-month contracts so they’re always playing for their next contract, so we have to be mindful of that.

“At the end of the day, we have the Instat programme which we employed the FA to get for us and we have been using that facility, where we can see the players real time, where we can see them in the matches, see how much mileage they run, see how their fitness is etc, so we use that facility to scout the players from abroad.

“We’re hoping that by Monday we will have the funds to pick the team. It is very limited also, it’s a very big flight, it’s a long flight, it’s a very expensive undertaking, so we may have to cut the squad even tighter. So basically, we’re hoping that by next Monday (September 12), where they’re having a draw also that we could pick the final team and put the travelling plans in place.

“It’s nearly done, it’s nearly there but it’s just that the financial constraints we have, it hampers how we want to do things efficiently and effectively,” Eve explained.

Midfielder Kevin Molino will be back in the squad after being away for more than a year, along with Leston Paul who plays for Memphis 901 in the USL Championship, Sheldon Bateau (S.K. Beveren on loan from Turkish club Samsunspor), Aubrey David (Saprissa), Ajani Fortune (USL Championship side Atlanta United 2), and Kareem Moses (Finnish club VPS), and goalkeeper Nicklas Frenderup, who plays for Ranheim in Norway.

Eve said Molino who last represented T&T at the CONCACAF Gold Cup before getting injured, has now been playing consistently with his club Columbus Crew.

In the last King’s Cup held in 2019, the Curacao team was invited to participate with the Vietnamese and Indian teams. In that tournament, Curacao won the championship with a victory over the Vietnamese team in the final.

Eve also revealed that speedy winger Ryan Telfer, Shannon Gomez, and Tristin Hodge will not be with the team due to club commitments. However, he noted that his purpose at the tournament will be to expose players and try to get a match or two against teams that have already qualified for the World Cup in Qatar.

Eve said he turned down opportunities to play friendly matches against Puerto Rico in the US and Grenada because they are teams in T&T’s confederation.

Let's be honest here. Eve will NEVER scout in the diaspora. He will NEVER make an approach to any player, they have to approach.
Just in England there is Dion Pereira, Jacob Bedeau and Ryan Innis. He moans about lack of a number 9 but there's Daniel Carr in Ireland who can't get a look in  but that's ok so he can play with a false 9 and/or use Levi up top.
Joke ting!

Carr could not make the grade last time  maybe he  had a  bad game...  Dion Pereira, of Bradford city ? There must be a striker out there ..Angus at least give Justin Wilson a call.

Carr is not what we need right now. He is by no means a prolific striker. He is 28 years old and in his entire professional career he has scored 28 goals and had 10 assists. Be that as it may, when he was in his best form, which was during his spell at Shamrock Rovers, we didn't call him. We waited until he left Shamrock to call him. Since then. his career has only regressed.

Regarding Dion Pereira, I have not see any proof that he is eligible for us.

Stoppage time might be significant. Tajik player down now.

Forgot to update the score. 1-1. Bateau made an unforced error.

Good goal for us, some spectacular saves by Frenderup and Philip. I'm very disappointed by Bateau's error for the first goal and Hackshaw was just strolling at defensive mid for the second goal. Honestly my son high school team would never let that play happen. Maybe he was injured or something. That's the only explanation I have for such an atrocity.
Please Hackshaw, yuh hadda be mashin man foot if they even approach that area.
We had good chances, enough for a win.

Tajikistan edge Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 in King's Cup semi.
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

TAJIKISTAN overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 on Thursday in the semifinal round of the four-team King's Cup knockout tournament, at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Hosts Thailand and Malaysia were due to contest the second semi on Thursday, for a spot in Saturday's final. T&T will also be in action on Saturday, in the third-place playoff.

T&T goalkeeper Nicklas Frenderup sustained an injury to his upper back after a collision with Tajikistan's attacker Shahrom Samiev in the 24th minute.

However, after receiving treatment, Frenderup played a part in T&T's goal; his 26th minute freekick was met by Levi Garcia, who head the ball to his brother Judah.

The younger Garcia got between right-back Manuchekhr Safarov and goalkeeper Rustam Yatimov and slotted his right-footed effort into the open net.

Two minutes into the second half, Tajikistan equalised courtesy of centre-forward Mukhammadzhon Rakhimov.

T&T centre-back Sheldon Bateau misjudged a ball from left-back Akhtam Nazarov and Rakhimov got behind him and send his left-footed shot under the body of the advancing Frenderup.

Samiev and Frenderup were involved in another incident; in the 55th minute, Frenderup came down hard after tipping Samiev's header overbar, and had to be replaced by T&T's lone back-up goalie, veteran Marvin Phillip.

Tajikistan got the game-winner in the 75th, from a right-footed drive by substitute Ekhson Pandzhshanbe, who only had Phillip to beat, following a midfield exchange between Shervoni Mabatshoev and Amirbek Dzhuraboev.

Starting Line-up.

Nicklas Frenderup, Aubrey David, Sheldon Bateau, Ajani Fortune, Judah Garcia, Kevin Molino (capt), Levi Garcia, Keston Julien, Alvin Jones, Neveal Hackshaw, Noah Powder.

Despite not looking to be at his cutting edge best, Frenderup came close to cleaning up the equalizer. Certainly cleaned up the mess that left him exposed point blank range on a free header.

What the highlights do not show is a patch of first half play in which the team was doing uncharacteristic things under what has been the Eve brand thus far (even considering Tajikistan's cat and mouse approach). Might have been the best attacking spell of Eve's tenure and it is disappointing it wasn't built upon.

On the chances
Perhaps it was too much to ask of L. Garcia to lay the ball off to Molino.  ::) Yeah, he has scored in that angle situation countless times ... almost textbook for him, but the counterintuitive pass to Molino had a better chance at rippling the net.
...

Powder's failure to convert is clear to Powder himself, so not much to be said there ... other than why didnt't he appeal for a penalty? No one here notice the handling of the ball?

One of the most criminal moments of the match was Molino being dispossessed and there being no cover such that we had an opponent running 70 yards with the ball with his teammates gradually incorporating and favorably shifting the numerical "balance" by the time Tajikistan arrived in our penalty area. Perhaps I was dreaming, but how is it that players abandoned their assignments with such ease? That stated, Molino isn't without responsibility. Glaring nonsense.

The TT goal was a good goal. The Thailand goal was exceptional. Molino last minute attempted over kick would have been great if it went in.  The best thing about the game is the TT uniform. The jersey looks exquisite.
