Soca Warriors to face Guadeloupe in Gold Cup qualifier.
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian).

T&T coach Angus Eve and his Soca Warriors will meet Guadeloupe, coached by former Guadeloupe-born France-international Jocelyn Angloma at the home of Inter Miami FC, the DRV PNK Stadium, in Fort Lauderdale on June 16/17 in one of six first round matches of the preliminary qualification to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

This was determined via a live draw witnessed by Eve on Friday at the SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California, USA, and hosted by TUDN sportscaster Valeria Marin, Fox Sports Lead Soccer Analyst and US Men’s National Team legend Alexi Lalas and ESPN play-by-play commentator Fernando Palomo.

CONCACAF president and FIFA vice president, Victor Montagliani, participate in the event, alongside the teams’ head coaches and important guests inclusive of the quartet of CONCACAF legends in former men’s players Jared Borgetti of Mexico, Carlos Pavon of Honduras, Cobi Jones of the USA, and former women’s player Tashana Vincent of Jamaica who helped with the event by serving as Draw Assistants.

Should 104th-FIFA T&T manage to get past unraked Guadeloupe whom they have an even record of two wins, three defeats, and two losses against in their first-round match, then they next face the winner of the Jamaal Shabbaz-coached Guyana, ranked 170th versus the 175th-ranked Grenada first-round clash for a spot in Group D of the 16-nation main draw with top-seeded Canada, ranked 47th in the world, 116th-ranked Guatemala, and Cuba, ranked 165th.

Speaking following the draw, former national captain Eve said, "We would have pulled the hardest team out of the possible six teams we could play, but its competition football and you have to go with the positive mindset and play whoever team that you draw at that point in time”

When we look at the other part of the draw and the possibility of our next opponent it will be between Grenada and Guyana, who is coached by our own Jamaal Shabbaz and then if we get past that the group in the main draw (Canada, Cuba and Guatemala) is a good one.

Looking ahead to the preliminary qualifiers Eve added, “T&T’s most capped player said ‘We have to do our work from day one, but it will be a little bit difficult in terms of our preparations as we may only have our players two days before the first match to prepare. In saying that we will be doing our homework and preparation firstly for the Guadeloupe match as well as some preparation for Guyana, or Grenada,” stated Eve.

In their past meetings, T&T went under to Guadeloupe in their first two matches, 1-2 in 1966 and 0-2 in the 1989 Caribbean Cup which T&T won, but have since gone on a five-match unbeaten run versus the French-speaking Caribbean Island, drawing goalless in 1994 also at the Caribbean Cup, before securing a 3-2 win in the 1999 Caribbean Cup and a 1-0 win in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2003, followed by a 2-2 draw and a goalless draw in 2007, and 2008 friendly internationals.

For the 2023 Gold Cup preliminary draw which was carried out using a single-blind system and one pot and based on the CONCACAF rankings as of March 31, 2023, the teams participating in the prelims were seeded into a Round One matchup or placed in Pot One, as follows Round One matchups (six highest-ranked teams): T&T (#1), Martinique (#2), Curaçao (#3), French Guiana (#4), Suriname (#5), and Guyana (#6), and today, they will be drawn against one of the teams from Pot One (Six lowest ranked teams) in Guadeloupe, St Kitts/Nevis, St Lucia, Grenada, Puerto Rico, and Sint Maarten for the first round of the preliminary round playoffs.

The Soca Warriors were forced to contest the preliminary round of qualification for the second straight Gold Cup campaign to qualify for the Gold Cup main draw group stage after failing to qualify directly from their four-team CONCACAF Nations League B Group C round-robin home-and-away series last month.

Eve’s men entered their final League B Group C match against table leaders Nicaragua at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago needing a win to secure the top spot in the group, promotion to League A of the CONCACAF Nations League, and automatic qualification to the Gold Cup.

However, Eve’s men could only muster a 1-1 draw to end with 13 points, one behind Nicaragua to miss out on being among the 12 automatic qualifiers for the 2023 Gold Cup, alongside Qatar, League A group winners: Canada, Mexico, Panama, and the USA, the four League A runners-up Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Jamaica along with the League B group winning quartet of Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, and Nicaragua.

Guadeloupe finished second to Cuba in their CONCACAF Nations League B Group A series with three wins and as many defeats in six matches for nine points, six behind the table toppers and just ahead of Antigua & Barbuda on goal difference while Barbados ended in cellar-placed with three points.

In the other preliminary round match-ups, Martinique was pitted against St Lucia coached by former T&T World Cup striker with the winner to meet Suriname and Puerto Rico for a place in Group C alongside the Central American trio of Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador, while the third and final preliminary round pairings see Curacao and St Kitts/Nevis winners meeting French Guiana and Sint Martin winner for a place in Group A where USA, Jamaica, and Nicaragua awaits.

Group B of the main draw will feature Mexico, Hait, Honduras, Asian Champions and guest nation, Qatar.

The 17th edition of the Gold Cup is scheduled to take place between June 16 - July 16, 2023, with the Final at SoFi Stadium, on Sunday, July 16, which will crown CONCACAF’s best men’s national team and will conclude two months of elite football in the region that also include the 2023 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Final and 2022/23 CONCACAF Nations League Finals.

T&T qualified to the Gold Cup preliminary qualifiers as a League B second-place finisher with French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Guyana, together with League A third-place finishers, Curaçao, Grenada, Martinique, and Suriname, and League C group winners Puerto Rico, St Kitts/Nevis, St Lucia, and Sint Maarten

Marvin Phillip: T&T in a good place ahead of Concacaf Gold Cup qualifiers.
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday).

DESPITE having to contest yet another round of 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup qualifying matches, seasoned T&T goalkeeper Marvin Phillip believes many positives are coming out of the national set-up in the lead-up to their opening qualifier clash against Guadeloupe, in June.

Phillip was an unused substitute in the team’s last two Concacaf Nations League meetings but had the opportunity to observe the squad in action from the substitute bench in their 3-0 victory away to the Bahamas on March 24 and the 1-1 result against Nicaragua in Tobago, three days later.

The latter result prevented T&T from automatic Gold Cup qualification. A win would have put them through. Now the team face their final fate, needing a victory against Guadeloupe and then another triumph against the winner of a Guyana versus Grenada clash.

At the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup qualification tournament draw on Friday, T&T received confirmation of the Guadeloupian test. There, T&T and 11 other teams will compete for the final three spots in the Gold Cup.

The qualification tournament kicks off from June 16 to 20 at DRV PNK Stadium, Ft Lauderdale, Florida, in the US. The Gold Cup gets underway from June 24 to July 16 in the US and Canada.

Phillip, who still wears the number one for T&T, said they’ve already overcome the past hurdles and heartbreak, and are charting forward with a positive mindset, goal-bound on Gold Cup qualification.

“Heading into the qualifiers…well firstly, we’re a bit disappointed that we didn’t go straight into the Gold Cup but we’re fortunate enough to be in the prelims and still have an opportunity to qualify for the Gold Cup.

“The mindset is good and we just want to go out there and win these two games and move into the Gold Cup group stage.

“We have been playing good football for quite a while together. I think we need to continue to work hard, play for each other, express ourselves and the results will take care of itself on the park,” he said.

Phillip was happy to see locally-based players and clubs finally back out playing domestic competitive football after over two years of inactivity owing to the pandemic.

He thinks the return of domestic tournaments plays an important role in helping head coach Angus Eve and his staff to spot new talent, to bolster the senior team’s chances of Gold Cup qualification.

“We won’t have any local senior team training right now because the league is going on. This is also a good sign for us because we haven’t been playing football for quite some time. It’s good that players can now get some time in on the pitch and increase their match fitness.

“I’m sure the coaches are eagerly waiting to see what new talent they could spot from the league as well,” he added.

Eve has also incorporated several new and veteran players into the squad.

French-born, Sporting Kansas City Academy midfielder Kaile Auvray was one of T&T’s standout performers in both matches and Phillip thinks the fusion between experience and youth in the T&T camp will soon bear fruit.

“Whether you’re young or old, once you reach on the national team, the players always welcome each other. There is always good camaraderie with the 18-year-olds to the 38-year-olds. There is never any animosity and there’s always a good mood among all the players.

“It’s been good thus far working with Angus. Kudos to him and his staff because they are getting players to respond to them and it really augurs well for us going forward.”

After Friday’s draw, Eve told TTFA media that Guadeloupe may be the toughest of the other contesting teams but that they would go in with a positive mindset and play to the best of their abilities.

“We have to do our work from day one. It will be difficult in the sense we will only have our players two days before the (Guadeloupe) match, but we will be doing our homework as of today on Guadeloupe and the other two teams,” Eve said.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T to know Concacaf Nations League opponents May 16.
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian).

T&T senior men's football team will know their Concacaf Nations League (CNL) B opponents on May 16 when the official draw for the 2023/2024 edition of the competition is made in Miami, Florida from 7 pm and will be executed using a single-blind system involving six pots for League A, four pots for League B, and three pots for League C.

As announced in February, beginning with the 2023/24 edition, the competition’s format has been revamped to include more direct elimination matches that will qualify teams for continental summer competitions.

Furthermore, Concacaf also confirmed that the 2023/24 and 2024/25 CNL editions will serve as the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America (six Concacaf nations will participate) and the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, respectively.

The distribution of teams for Leagues A, B, and C has been determined based on the results of the 2022/23 CNL Group Stage, including a promotion system from Leagues B and C to Leagues A and B, respectively.

The CNL will continue to be played in a three-League format (A, B, and C) and the region’s 41 men’s senior national teams will be distributed into the Leagues according to the results of the preceding CNL edition.

For the 2023/2024 edition, T&T will again compete in League B after national coach Angus Eve’s men entered their final League B Group C match against table leaders Nicaragua at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago needing a win to secure the top spot in the group, promotion to League A of the CONCACAF Nations League, and automatic qualification to the Gold Cup, but came up short in March.

T&T could only muster a 1-1 draw to end with 13 points, one behind Nicaragua to miss out on being among the 12 automatic qualifiers for the 2023 Gold Cup, alongside Qatar, League A group winners: Canada, Mexico, Panama, and the USA, the four League A runners-up Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Jamaica along with the League B group winning quartet of Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, and Nicaragua.

For the new season of the competition, the teams joining T&T in League B include Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Montserrat, Puerto Rico (promoted), St Kitts/Nevis (promoted), St Lucia (promoted), St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Sint Maarten (promoted).

For the May 16 drawing of the groups, the quartet of T&T, French Guiana, Guyana, and Guadeloupe have all been drawn in Pot One and will be favourites to top their respective round-robin four-team pools which will be completed by one team each from the other three pots, Pot 2 (Antigua & Barbuda, St Kitts/Nevis, Dominican Republic, Bermuda); Pot 3 (St Lucia, Puerto Rico, Montserrat, and St Vincent and the Grenadines); and Pot 4 (Belize, Barbados, Bahamas, and Sint Maarten).

Before competing in the opening round of matches in the 2023/2024 CNL, the Soca Warriors will have their eyes focused on the preliminary round qualifiers for the upcoming Concacaf Gold Cup in the USA.

T&T is set to face Guadeloupe, coached by former Guadeloupe-born France-international Jocelyn Angloma at the DRV PNK Stadium, in Fort Lauderdale on June 16/17 in one of six first-round matches of the preliminary qualification to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Should 104th-FIFA T&T manage to get past unranked Guadeloupe whom they have an even record of two wins, three defeats, and two losses against in their first-round match, then they next face the winner of the Jamaal Shabbazz-coached Guyana, ranked 170th versus the 175th-ranked Grenada first-round clash for a spot in Group D of the 16-nation main draw with top-seeded Canada, ranked 47th in the world, 116th-ranked Guatemala, and Cuba, ranked 165th.

In the other preliminary round match-ups, Martinique was pitted against St Lucia coached by former T&T World Cup striker Stern John with the winner to meet Suriname and Puerto Rico for a place in Group C alongside the Central American trio of Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador, while the third and final preliminary round pairings see Curacao and St Kitts/Nevis winner meeting French Guiana and Sint Maarten winner for a place in Group A where USA, Jamaica, and Nicaragua awaits.

Group B of the main draw will feature Mexico, Haiti, Honduras, Asian Champions and guest nation, Qatar.

The 2023/2024 CNL League A has been expanded to include 16 teams (up from 12), and a new quarterfinal round has been created with the groups to be drawn from Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba (promoted), Curaçao, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala (promoted), Haiti (promoted), Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua (promoted), Panama, Suriname, and the USA.

For Group Stage play, the 12 lowest ranked League A national teams (based on the Concacaf Rankings) will be split into two groups of six teams each and will play in a “Swiss style” league system, with each team playing a total of four games (two at home and two away).

After Group Stage play, each group’s first and second-place finishers (four teams in total) will advance to the CNL Quarterfinals, where they will join the four top-ranked League A national teams.

League A’s new Quarterfinal round will be played in a home-and-away format, with the aggregate score winners in each quarterfinal matchup advancing to the CNL Finals. Specifically for the 2023/24 CNL, the quarterfinal winners will also qualify for the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America.

The other two participants will be determined via a single direct elimination play-in between the four League A losing quarterfinalists.

For the League A draw, the seeded teams in the quarterfinals are Mexico, USA, Costa Rica, and Canada while the six pots will comprise Pot 1 (Panama and Haiti), Pot 2 (Jamaica and Guatemala), Pot 3 (Honduras and El Salvador), Pot 4 (Martinique and Cuba), Pot 5 (Curacao and Suriname), and Pot 6 (Nicaragua and Grenada)

And in the nine-nation League C competition, the teams have been divided into three pots, Pot 1 (Bonaire, Dominica, Aruba); Pot 2 (Turks & Caicos Islands, Cayman Islands, Saint Martin), and Pot 3 (Anguilla, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands) from which three groups will be formed to play a home-and-away format as well, for a total of four matches per team (two at home and two away).

The 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League Group Stage will be played during the official FIFA Match Windows in September, October, and November 2023.

The 2023/24 CNL Finals, where a champion will be crowned, will take place at a venue to-be-announced in March 2024.

Promotion and relegation

Promotion and relegation between CNL Leagues will take place at the conclusion of the third edition, as follows:

League A: Fifth and sixth-place finishers will be relegated to League B.

League B: Group winners will be promoted to League A, and fourth-place finishers will be relegated to League C.

League C: Group winners and the best second-place finisher will be promoted to League B.

New Concacaf ruling threatens T&T Gold Cup prep.
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian).

T&T Soca Warriors coach Angus Eve says his team faces a big possibility of going into its Concacaf Gold Cup first-round preliminary match against Guadeloupe at the DRV PNK Stadium, in Fort Lauderdale, USA on June 16 without playing any international warm-up or friendly encounters.

The Soca Warriors were scheduled to face 2022 FIFA World Cup host Qatar on June 8, and Concacaf rivals Guatemala on June in two

Gold Cup warm-up matches in Florida, USA ahead of their win or go-home encounter with Guadeloupe with the winner to face the winner of the Guyana/Grenada clash for a spot in the Group D of the main draw which takes place from Juen 24 to July 4 alongside the top-seeded Canada, ranked 47th in the world, 116th-ranked Guatemala and Cuba, ranked 165th.

According to Eve and Shaun Fuentes, the T&T Football Association (T&TFA) Press Officer, there’s a new ruling from Concacaf that prohibits national teams from playing friendly matches in the same state a tournament will be played. For example, the Gold Cup will be played in the state of Florida, so no team could play international warm-up matches in that state for that entire month.

Both men were speaking at the T&TFA Press Conference held at the Home of Football, Couva on Wednesday.

Eve stated, “We had a match in mid-May which I choose not to take simply because the local league has to pick three teams by May 28 to compete in Concacaf competitions, so I just thought that we have been disrupting the league and what the local clubs are doing.

“So, we actually had two matches planned for early June, that is Qatar on June 8, and Guatemala on June 11, unfortunately, we got some bad news again as the matches were to be played in the USA.

“However, Concacaf last week send us communication saying that we can’t play in the same state that they have competitions in, it’s news to me, but it’s a new Gold Cup ruling as well,” said Eve.

Fuentes added, “This information not only affects us as Costa Rica, Guatemala and Qatar were also notified that they could not play pre-tournament matches within the same state and their scheduled Gold Cup main draw matches, and like other teams we are now seeking alternative friendly venues to try and get a friendly or two before the match against Guadeloupe on June 16.

Eve was quick to point out that the match with Qatar is already gone as the Middle East nation has already rescheduled their build-up to the tournament with a friendly match carded to be played in Spain on that same date.

“So, as it stands, we most likely will have the mandatory four days as provided by FIFA before the start of the tournament and go into camp on June 12, ahead of our opening match.

T&T qualified for the Gold Cup preliminary qualifiers as a League B second-place finisher with French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Guyana, together with League A third-place finishers Curaçao, Grenada, Martinique, and Suriname, and League C group winners Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and Sint Maarten.

The Soca Warriors were forced to contest the preliminary round of qualification for the second straight Gold Cup campaign to qualify for the Gold Cup main draw group stage after failing to qualify directly from their four-team CONCACAF Nations League B Group C round-robin home-and-away series last month.

Eve’s men entered their final League B Group C match against table leader Nicaragua at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago needing a win to secure the top spot in the group, promotion to League A of the CONCACAF Nations League and automatic qualification to the Gold Cup.

However, T&T and Nicaragua drew 1-1 which meant Eve's men ended with 13 points, one behind Nicaragua to miss out on being among the 12 automatic qualifiers for the 2023 Gold Cup, alongside Qatar, League A group winners: Canada, Mexico, Panama, and the USA, the four League A runners-up Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Jamaica along with the League B group winning quartet of Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, and Nicaragua.

Reflecting on the team's failed campaign in the 2022/2023 Concacaf Nations League B Group C series, Eve said the fact is that the result was not what we wanted albeit the team is in a very moment.

"We would have liked to qualify for the tournament (Gold Cup) directly, but unfortunately we didn't, so we have to go through the preliminary stage."

"In saying so, we do have experience in it as we went through that phase, the same process in 2021, and we are in a better place now that a lot of players were unattached simply because there was no local league football running for a number of years in the country, and now that we have a league, we feel a little bit more confident that the players are getting the necessary match practice that they will have to get.

With respect to preparations of the local team, Eve added, "We have as a technical staff have been monitoring the players who have been playing both locally, and abroad, and there are some players who are unattached, and they might probably be in a bit of jeopardy because we now have the opportunity to select players who are actually in season, and playing football, and who are match fit."

Guadeloupe, meanwhile, finished second to Cuba in their CONCACAF Nations League B Group A series with three wins and as many defeats in six matches for nine points, six behind the table toppers and just ahead of Antigua and Barbuda on goal difference while Barbados ended in cellar-place with three points.

T&T and Guadeloupe have met seven times internationally with each team winning twice with the other three matches drawn.

The Soca Warriors went under to Guadeloupe in their first two matches, 2-1 in 1966 and 2-0 in the 1989 Caribbean Cup, which T&T won, but have since gone on a five-match unbeaten run versus the French-speaking Caribbean Island, drawing goalless in 1994 also at the Caribbean Cup, before securing a 3-2 win in the 1999 Caribbean Cup and a 1-0 win in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2003, followed by a 2-2 draw and a goalless draw in 2007, and 2008 friendly internationals. W

with regards to Guadeloupe commonly called the “Gwada Boys” and coached by Guadeloupe-born former France-international Jocelyn Angloma, Eve said his team has been doing their homework.

He explained, "They (Guadeloupe), have a number of players playing in the French First Division, and they do have a number of players also playing in the French Second Division, and we are dissecting the way they play and to that end, we are in the process of adding an additional member of staff, another Data Analyst (contractual discussions still ongoing) who will help us in the dissecting the way they play and the players that they have and what their tendencies are.

The Gold Cup takes place from June 16 to July 16 and will crown the best national team in the region with 15 stadiums in 14 USA and Canadian metropolitan areas hosting matches.

In addition to the T&T and Guadeloupe encounter, the preliminary round one fixtures between Martinique and St Lucia, and Curacao and St Kitts and Nevis will also take place on June 16 at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale from 7 pm, and 9 pm, respectively.

One day later (June 17), at the same venue, the three remaining first-round preliminary matches will come off with French Guiana against Sint Maarten from 4.30 pm followed by Suriname versus Puerto Rico at 7 pm, and two hours later, Guyana up against Grenada.

In the second round of the preliminaries, the winners of the Martinique/St Lucia match and the winner of the Suriname/Puerto Rico clash will square off for a place in Group C alongside the Central American trio of Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador while the third and final preliminary round pairings see Curacao and St Kitts and Nevis winners meeting French Guiana and Sint Maarten winner for a place in Group A where the USA, Jamaica, and Nicaragua await. Group B of the main draw will feature Mexico, Haiti, Honduras, Asian Champions, and guest nation, Qatar.

New CONCACAF ruling disrupts T&T’s Gold Cup warm-up plans.
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express).

QATAR MATCH OFF

AN INNOCUOUS CONCACAF Gold Cup rule has cost Trinidad and Tobago a juicy pre-Gold Cup warm-up against Qatar.

The Middle Eastern hosts of the 2022 FIFA World, who will be a guest team at the Gold Cup, will instead warm up at a summer football tournament in Spain, while another T&T warm-up against Guatemala is being re-organised elsewhere.

These were among the revelations made yesterday, when T&T senior men’s national team head coach Angus Eve held a briefing at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

The Soca Warriors were due to play Qatar on June 8 and Guatemala on June 11 in the United States, before entering the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying tournament where they play a straight knockout against Guadeloupe on June 16. On June 20, the winners of that match face the winners of another knockout tie between Guyana and Grenada for a spot in the main draw of the Gold Cup, which runs from June 24 to July 16.

“Unfortunately, we got some bad news,” Eve reported. “CONCACAF sent out a communication, like two weeks ago, saying that we can’t play in a state where their competition is being played.”

A former national player who represented T&T at the semi-final of the 2000 Gold Cup, Eve admitted never before hearing of such a rule.

“Qatar is now off the table because of that ruling,” Eve announced. “We are working on trying to get two other matches.”

TTFA press officer Shaun Fuentes further clarified.

“It’s a Gold Cup ruling that they (CONCACAF) have issued (which states) any state or city that Gold Cup matches are being played, they are asking teams that are participating in the Gold Cup to refrain from playing international warm-ups in those territories.”

Fuentes said the TTFA must now seek to either play its warm-up matches outside of the United States or play in a different US city. Fuentes did not say in which US city the proposed friendlies were to be played.

“We were notified of this just last week. It is not just us that are affected. Costa Rica are affected, Jamaica and Guatemala, as well as Qatar,” Fuentes added. “The fixtures for those friendly matches were set until those notifications from CONCACAF.”

Eve also explained that he had earlier turned down another friendly international carded for mid-May, with the intention of not disrupting the Trinidad and Tobago Premier Football League competition.

“I (would) like to take the local players to an international game so that they could play at that speed and at that level, before I pick the final squad,” Eve stated. “We didn’t take the match, simply because we didn’t want to disrupt what the local clubs were doing.”

With the Guatemala international possibly still on the cards, Eve hopes to have two additional warm-ups before facing Guadeloupe. He has also added a yet-to-be-confirmed data analyst to his staff, to analyse possible Gold Cup opponents.

Eve revealed that his team will not have a training camp prior to the Gold Cup because of the involvement of players with their clubs, both local and international. His players will only become available on official FIFA international match-days. He also expressed some concern that his captain Joevin Jones, Jesse Williams and Noah Powder are without a club. On the other hand, Kevin Molino, Daniel Phillip and Levi Garcia are fit again after suffering recent injuries.

Eve will officially have his players from June 12, four days before playing Guadeloupe. However, he is enthused that his local players especially, are getting necessary match practice through the TTPFL.

“All of the players are in season,” Eve declared. “We probably will just have to go into the (team) camp four days before.”

Despite the setbacks, Eve believes T&T are better served by having had the experience of getting through the 2021 Gold Cup qualifying round. Two years ago, T&T beat Montserrat 6-1, then French Guiana on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 draw. On entering Group A of the main draw, the Soca Warriors held finalists Mexico (0-0) and Guatemala (1-1) to draws, but lost 2-0 to resurgent quarter-finalists El Salvador.

“We are very confident in what we are able to do and what we can do, and we are realistic in what we can do,” Eve assured.

Eve expects a fit Molino for Gold Cup prelims.
By Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian).

Soca Warriors coach Angus Eve says he expects USA-based midfielder Kevin Molino to be fit for this country’s all-important 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup first-round preliminary match against Guadeloupe at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on June 16.

In late March, USA Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew forward Kevin Molino’s awful luck with knee injuries continued, when the club announced that the midfielder will be out six to eight weeks after undergoing a meniscectomy.

The 32-year-old, who had suffered three torn ACLs previously, made substitute appearances in the Crew’s first three matches of the 2023 season before getting the procedure done.

Due to the injury, Molino missed T&T’s final two Concacaf Nations League B Group C matches against Bahamas, a 3-0 win, and then against Nicaragua, a 1-1 draw which saw the Soca Warriors coming up short in their efforts to gain promotion to League A of the Concacaf Nations League for the 2023/2024 season, as well as automatic qualification to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

This after, Eve’s men entered their final League B Group C match against table leader Nicaragua at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago, needing a win to secure the top spot in the group, but missed out to Nicaragua, and for the second time in succession was forced to go through the preliminary qualifiers to secure a spot in the competition’s main draw.

With the result, T&T qualified for the Gold Cup preliminary qualifiers as a League B second-place finisher with French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Guyana, together with League A third-place finishers Curaçao, Grenada, Martinique, and Suriname, and League C group winners Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and Sint Maarten.

Looking ahead to the availability of players from which he will select his squad for the Gold Cup, Eve noted that he has some concerns with the in-activity of three players, namely Joevin Jones, Noah Powder, and Jesse Williams.

He said, “As far as I know Joevin (Jones) is now organising with some clubs and having talks with them, while the other two guys, Noah and Jesse are also trying to get secure deals as well.

“They are the only three guys that we have on our list that are not active with a club at the moment, but I know they are trying,” said Eve.

Eve had some positive news on former captain Molino saying, “He (Molino) is back in full training, but he hasn’t played a match as yet because the prognosis for the injury was three weeks when he got injured, but that time has gone, and he is fully back in training 100 percent.”

In addition to Molino, another player who missed the final two Concacaf Nations League matches due to injury and is expected to be back in the squad is in-form Greece-based Levi Garcia of title-chasing AEK Athens.

In the build=up to the Gold Cup preliminary rounds, the Soca Warriors were scheduled to face 2022 FIFA World Cup host Qatar on June 8, and CONCACAF rivals Guatemala on June 11 in two Gold Cup warm-up matches in Florida, USA, but last week CONCACAF issued some communication to the T&TFA which stated that teams will not be allowed to play friendly matches in the same state that they have competition matches within the same month.

This means the friendly with 2022 FIFA World Cup host Qatar has been called off with the Middle Eastern country now carded to play in a tournament in Spain while efforts are still being made to play the Guatemala match in another state.

The winner of the T&T/Guadeloupe match will meet the winner of the Guyana/Grenada clash for a spot in the Group D of the main draw which takes place from Juen 24 to July 4 alongside the top-seeded Canada, ranked 47th in the world, 116th-ranked Guatemala and Cuba, ranked 165th.

T&T and Guadeloupe have met seven times in the past, with the French-speaking island winning the first two encounters, 1-2 in 1966 and 0-2 in the 1989 Caribbean Cup which T&T went on to win.

Since then, T&T has gone on a five-match unbeaten run versus the “Gwada Boys”, drawing goalless in 1994 also at the Caribbean Cup, before securing a 3-2 win in the 1999 Caribbean Cup and a 1-0 win in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2003, followed by a 2-2 draw and a goalless draw in 2007, and 2008 friendly internationals.

In the other preliminary rounds fixtures on June 16, Martinique faces St Lucia, and Curacao tackles St Kitts/Nevis at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale from 7 pm, and 9 pm, respectively.

A day later (June 17), at the same venue, the three remaining first-round preliminary matches will come off with French Guiana against Sint Maarten from 4.30 pm followed by Suriname versus Puerto Rico at 7 pm, and two hours later, Guyana up against Grenada.

Soca Warriors coach Eve: No excuses ahead of Guadeloupe.
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday).

HEAD coach of the national men’s senior football team Angus Eve said the statement he made last month saying Guadeloupe is one of the most challenging opponents in the Gold Cup qualifying tournament was not made in an effort to make an excuse for underperforming against their Caribbean opponents.

Eve was speaking during a media conference at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Balmain, Couva on Wednesday.

T&T will play Guadeloupe on June 16 in Ft Lauderdale, Florida in the first round of the Gold Cup qualifying tournament. If T&T defeat Guadeloupe they will play the winner of the Grenada-Guyana match. If T&T win their second match in the qualifying tournament they will qualify for the Gold Cup starting on June 24.

When the draw was announced a few weeks ago, Eve said Guadeloupe will prove to be a handful but he was just being realistic.

“They say I am making an excuse (when I talk about tough opposition) and in other quarters they say we not playing difficult teams and that I am making an excuse. It is a fact. The fact is that they (Guadeloupe) have a number of players playing in the French first division and they do have a number of players playing in the French second division.”

Eve said research is being done on Guadeloupe to help in their preparation for the match which includes hiring a new member of staff.

“We are dissecting the way they play and to that end we do have an additional member of staff which I have brought on – an additional data analyst. We just finalising so I don’t want to call his name right now, but he will do a lot of work in that regard.”

Eve said two warm-up matches are planned to be held in June. The opposition is uncertain because a new Gold Cup rule states that any city or state that Gold matches are being played in, competing teams can’t play their warm-up matches in those areas.

T&T were only notified of the rule change last week and now have to make changes in their build-up campaign. T&T were scheduled to play Qatar on June 8 and Guatemala on June 11.

Eve said T&T will definitely not play Qatar as the latter will go to Spain for matches, but other practice matches are being planned.

Eve also said experienced midfielder Kevin Molino is now fit again to play after battling an injury which forced him to miss the Nations League matches in March.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Che Benny added to Soca Warriors 60-man preliminary roster for Gold Cup Qualifier
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

Concacaf has announced the preliminary rosters for the 25 men’s senior national teams participating in the Concacaf Gold Cup and Qualifier tournaments from June 16 to July 16.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) selected and submitted 60 players for their preliminary roster, most of which will be weaned out and trimmed down to a possible 23-man squad.

Rising youngsters Levi Garcia, Real Gill, Kaile Auvray, Josiah Cooper, Nathaniel Garcia and Molik Khan spearhead the younger generation of talent on the list while veterans Marvin Phillip (goalkeeper), Ataulla Guerra, Joevin Jones, Kevin Molino and Sheldon Bateau were also selected.

Also among them are regular national team starters Ryan Telfer, Michael Poon Angeron, Nathaniel James, Neveal Hackshaw, Alvin Jones, Duane Muckette and Nicklas Frenderup (goalkeeper).

Just before 4pm on Thursday, the TTFA made one change to the preliminary Gold Cup roster by adding in in-form striker Che Benny. This comes after Greece-based professional Judah Garcia recently sustained a hamstring injury and has been ruled out of upcoming matches.

The request for the change was made to Concacaf on medical grounds and was finalised.

On the preliminary team selection, head coach Angus Eve said, “We’ve been monitoring all the home-based and overseas-based players over the past few months and Che has been among the players we have been observing.

“He missed out on making the original roster because of the tight competition among players for the position he plays. But with Judah now ruled out, we’ve decided to include Che as his replacement.”

Despite all this talent, T&T will have to contest the final round of Gold Cup qualifying from June 16-20 at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Before that, TT come up against Guatemala in an international friendly on June 11 at the Subaru Park, Pennsylvania.

For the Gold Cup prelims, they face Guadeloupe in round one. The 12 contesting teams are divided into two groups of six. After single-match elimination play, the six-match winners will advance to round two. The three round-two matchup winners will advance to the 2023 Gold Cup group stages.

Group stage action takes place from June 24 to July 4 and will feature 16 nations divided into four groups.

After round-robin play, the top two finishers in each of the groups (eight teams) will advance to the quarter-finals (July 8 and 9). The semis kick off on July 12 and the title match, is at SoFi Stadium, four days later.

TT, however, were forced to contest the Gold Cup prelims after they failed to top Group C in their 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League, League B matches.

Needing a victory over Nicaragua in the final group match in March to affirm Gold Cup qualification, TT drew 1-1, and were pushed into league B – Concacaf’s second tier – and eventually the Gold Cup prelims. Nicaragua advanced.

But, on Wednesday, a story circulated online suggesting that Nicaragua may have fielded an illegal player for some of their Nations League matches, even one against TT; a 2-1 Nicaragua victory.

It hinted that if the player is found to be a naturalized player in another country, Nicaragua could drop points for using him in the tournament, which would earn TT an automatic Gold Cup spot.

This player, however, was not included in Nicaragua’s provisional squad for their upcoming Gold Cup matches.

Newsday shared the article with several TTFA team staff and administrators but only normalisation committee chairman Robert Hadad responded saying, “We are still checking the authenticity of the article.”

Eve will address the media next Thursday at a press briefing at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, prior to the team’s departure for Pennsylvania on Friday.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Just did some research into the issue of the illegal player. Looks like Nicaragua is GUILTY of fielding an illegal player. The man requested citizenship through naturalization in 2018. He never spent 5 years living in Nicaragua as he took up residence in Costa Rica and Paraguay in 2019 to 2021. Meaning that he did not get his 5 years living in Nicaragua to qualify for naturalization. Additionally,  his citizenship would have been approved in 2023 if he met the 5 years requirement. However, he played in the 2022 Nation league games. Even if they allowed his 5 years naturalization include living in Costa Rica and Paraguay, he still played in the 2022 Nations league games. This means that Nicaragua will be deducted their points and we will qualify for the Gold cup and League A of the Nations League.

Nicaragua even removed the player from their upcoming games. Which speaks directly to this issue.

I can't see FIFA allowing this. I expect the resolution of this within 7 days. I believe Bahamas may get the match with Guadeloupe once this is dealt with the way it's supposed to.

https://www.fmfstateofmind.com/2023/5/30/23739659/nicaraguas-national-team-richard-rodriguez-mexico-zendejas-case-concacaf

The only way for Rodriguez to get citizenship to play for Nicaragua is through naturalization. He does not even have a parent or grandparent who is Nicaraguan.

I don't know how this one flew under the radar. My guess is that someone knew about this well before this came to light, and decided to release this information right before the Gold cup preliminaries, right before the point when nothing can be done.

If this information came out after the Gold cup, then it's after the fact. . Nicaragua would have already played in the Gold cup, and the only penalty for them would have been removal from League A Nations league. Or maybe even relgation to League C, depending on the number of points they would be deducted.

Nicaragua continued to play the player knowing he was illegal. Now that the story is out, the player is no longer on the roster for the coming games. Looks rather suspicious.

Btw, Group A Gold Cup includes USA and of course Jamaica. Group D has Canada, Cuba and Guatemala. So pick your poison.

I think the Nicaragua FA overlooked the fine print in the FIFA document that requires the player to live in the country for 5 years, before becoming a naturalized citizen. Nicaragua does have a short naturalization process for someone with a special skill, in this case, it is the trade of a footballer. Citizenship through this way requires him to live in the country for 2 years.

The footballer in question moved to Nicaragua in 2018 and started playing for the national team in 2019. What this tells me is that the Nicaraguan FA thought that their process of naturalization was aligned with FIFA's. However, every country in the world has its own period of naturalization which can be anywhere from 2 years to 30 years (Liechtenstein). This is why FIFA went with a blanket policy of 5 years.

Usually an illegible player is identified in a short time. But for some reason, the Nicaraguan FA got away with this for 4 years.

Apparently Nicaragua may be facing a huge sanction for this. Their FA knew that the player had citizenship, but not naturalized under FIFAs conditions. FIFA can define this as 'cheating'. Which means that they can get a suspension.

In the majority of these cases, the national teams usually played less than a handful of games in a short while, before finding out that the player is illegal. Someone in the Nicaraguan FA knew what was going on. Their FA turned a blind eye for 4 years. Wow.

There's no way Concacaf is going to let this one slide. I expect a swift response next week by Concacaf to disqualify Nicaragua from the Gold cup, and give Bahamas the green light to get ready for the Guadeloupe game. If Concacaf doesnt take action, this will set precedents for other teams to take their chances with fielding illegal players. Inaction by Concacaf will destroy the integrity of their competitions.

I expect FIFA to fine, or suspend Nicaragua. Then possibly relegate them to League C. Or possibly all of the above.

I think people are forgetting that with a strong coach, a coach that is well respected, the players play better.

With a coach whos a joke and fraid rain and white people as he once said, it doens't instill confidence to win.

We need a coach that is competant and secure, not insecure and is't fully confident in his abilities.

So much talent inside and out of TT and this is what they choose, but its sabotage on behalf of certain people, so I am not surprised.

Eve is all we have at the moment. I really don't know who is available that can replace him.

Let's see if this game takes place.

Eve: TTFA “looking into” possible Nicaragua protest, coy on Shaw but welcomes Che.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Senior Team head coach Angus Eve revealed that the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) is “looking into” the possibility that Nicaragua fielded an ineligible player against the Soca Warriors during the 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League competition.

On 4 June 2022, Uruguay-born midfielder Richard Rodriguez was a 85th minute substitute for the Nicaragua national team, as they successfully defended a 2-1 lead over Trinidad and Tobago in Nations League action at Managua.

Rodriguez, who was also a second half substitute in Nicaragua’s 4-0 win The Bahamas, played a total of 36 minutes in his adopted country’s entire 2022/23 Concacaf Nations League campaign.

Yet those minutes can have a profound effect on the outcome of the group if, as a Mexican website suggested, Rodriguez played illegally.

Article 7 of Fifa bylaws regarding international eligibility states that, where a player does not assume eligibility based on birth in the respective territory or through his biological parents or grandparents, he must have lived in that country for at least five years—once he moved to that country over the age of 10.

Rodriguez, according to the site, moved to Nicaragua in 2018, when he joined top-flight Nicaraguan team Real Estelí. It meant that he had been a resident for four years—a one-year stint in Paraguay in 2019 notwithstanding—when he came on to face Trinidad and Tobago last June.

This January, Fifa handed the Mexican Football Federation a 10,000 Swiss francs fine with 3-0 defeats for every time that Mexico played American forward Alejandro Zendejas, who did not file the required paperwork to switch allegiance from the United States.

If Fifa follows that precedent with Nicaragua, the three-point swing for the Warriors would see Eve’s team top their group and win automatic promotion to the Concacaf Nations League A as well as the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Eve said he spoke about the matter with TTFA officials, but the rest is above his pay grade.

“I work in the sun, that is the office people’s job,” Eve told Wired868, with a chuckle. “All I can say is there was a conversation with me, and they are looking into it.”

Neither Soca Warriors manager Richard Piper nor TTFA general secretary Amiel Mohammed provided an update to Wired868 on the matter up to the time of publication.

Meanwhile, Eve is preparing to face Guadeloupe on 16 June in a Gold Cup qualifier at the Drv Pnk Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Today, the Warriors coach announced a change in his 57-member provisional squad for the tournament, as he nominated AC Port of Spain attacker Che Benny to replace injured Greece-based midfielder Judah Garcia.

“We’ve had to make one change to the provisional squad because Judah sustained a hamstring injury,” Eve told the TTFA Media. “We’ve been monitoring all the home-based and overseas-based players over the past few months and Che has been among the players we have been observing.

“He missed out on making the original roster because of the tight competition among players for the position he plays. But with Judah now ruled out, we’ve decided to include Che as his replacement.”

Eve’s long-list includes uncapped Canada-born forward Malcolm Shaw, who can represent Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago or Canada at international level.

Eve was coy when asked whether Shaw has committed his international future to the Soca Warriors, or if his staff personally extended an invitation to every member of his provisional list.

“I have no comment on Shaw,” said Eve. “I haven’t spoken physically to all of [the players] but for most of them the answer is yes [they want to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Gold Cup].

“I am in contact periodically with a lot of the players.”

The full Trinidad and Tobago provisional roster for the 2023 Gold Cup is as follows:

Goalkeepers:

Nicklas Frenderup (Ranheim IL—Norway), Marvin Phillip (AC Port of Spain), Raheem Lee (Police FC), Jahiem Wickham (Toronto FC—Canada), Denzil Smith (W Connection);

Midfielders:

Justin Sadoo, Kaihim Thomas, Kevon Goddard (all Defence Force), Noah Powder (unattached), Luke Phillip (Club Sando), Duane Muckette (AC Port of Spain), Matthew Woo Ling (Miami United FC—USA), Kristian Lee-Him (IFK Eskilstuna—Sweden), Nathaniel Garcia (TLH Rangers), Molik Khan (Minnesota United 2—USA), Andre Rampersad (HFX Wanderers—Canada), Neveal Hackshaw (Oakland Roots SC—USA), Joevin Jones (Police FC);

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

In 2017 French Guyana played Florent Molouda who played for France many times but was born in French Guyana. He was selected to play for FG against Honduran in a Gold Cup match against Hon,it ended in a 0-0 draw but the match was eventually awarded to Honduras after investigations. He had played for France 80 times.

That's right Frico. Nicaragua ain't reporting this. But actions speak louder than words. Their FA 'removed' him from the squad for their upcoming games. I expect something soon on this. I can't see Concacaf allowing Nicaragua to play in the Gold Cup after this.

Interesting thing about Malouda is that he is actually born in FG, and Concacaf still took action. FG is an overseas department of France. Them along with Guadeloupe and Martinique used French expats in the past. I believe Angloma played for Guadeloupe in a Gold Cup too. But Guadeloupe wasn't penalized.

What happened to Khaleem Hyland. That midfield looks a little thin. We need a brute who can hit hard and a midfield magician. I don't see none of them players playing that role.

gawd on pitch,I was aware of those points you talked about on these French departments, they are parts of France,in a way, even so French Guyana lost out when the match was awarded to Honduras.I definitely don't trust us having to go through those matches to qualify,I hope they ban Nicaragua rass.

I feel de same way. Guadeloupe have a very strong defence line. 2 players playing in serie A and 3 in Ligue 1. Compare that to we back line. Yikes.
