Fatima clinches north title in thriller.

It has been 24 years since Fatima College last won a North Zone Intercol title. Well, pupils of the school, both past and present, teachers, and family members and friends of the players were overjoyed yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, as the team ended its drought in the competition, beating North league winners Mucurapo 5-4 on penalty kicks, after what was arguably the best match of the Secondary Schools Football League season.
The teams’ two previous meetings saw each side earning a victory, Fatima winning the first 2-1 and Mucurapo taking the second 1-0. However those matches, although keenly contested, were pale in comparison to yesterday’s final as far as action and excitement is concerned. The score at the end of full time was 4-4.
The teams started confidently, but Fatima, in the fourth minute, struck first through the prolific Makesi Lewis just seconds after Mucurapo striker Akim Armstrong missed an easy chance to give his team the lead at the other end.
Lewis found himself with room to run at the opposition’s defence just inside the Mucurapo’s half, then unleashed a right-footed blast from more than 25 yards out which beat “Compre” keeper Denzil Cazabon all ends up.
Chad De Freitas doubled Fatima’s advantage in the 33rd, expertly timing a high, curling free-kick from defender Marvin James on the left to volley home on the back post.
Two minutes later, “Compre” captain Richard Roy, who had an MVP performance for his team in the middle of the park, pulled one back ten minutes before the break, when Fatima’s keeper Adrian Foncette mishandled his low drive from just outside the box.
This was the first of a number of costly blunders from the normally sure-handed custodian.
It was 2-2 in the 62nd, when Khaleen Hyland dribbled his marker and crossed for Atullah Guerra, unmarked on the back post, to head past Foncette.
A mix-up between Cazabon and one of his defenders allowed a looping free-kick from left-back Kevon Villaroel to bounce into the goal, giving the lead to Fatima once again just four minutes after Mucurapo equalised.
But the zonal champs got a second equaliser in the 70th, substitute Ricardo Peltier banging the ball into the net when Foncette failed to hold onto a right-sided cross from Guerra.
“Compre” supporters were cheering again in the 85th, when Foncette parried a shot into Guerra’s path for him to finish with aplomb and give his side the first lead of the match.
With the score at 4-3 and less than three minutes to go, Mucurapo looked to have the title in the bag, but deep into injury time forward Jevon Morris latched onto a rebound and slid the ball past Cazabon, sending the Fatima supporters into a frenzy.
Extra time failed to produce a winner, so penalties had to be taken. Mucurapo’s Khalem Hyland was the only kicker to miss.
Carapichaima wins Central crown.

Carapichaima Senior Comprehensive defeated Presentation College 4-1 on penalty kicks to take the RBTT Central Zone Secondary Schools Intercol title, at the Ato Boldon Stadium yesterday.
After the teams were not separated in regulation time and 20 minutes extra time, Carapichaima took the game on penalty kicks after four of their players converted from the spot. Three spot kicks were wasted by Presentation College, as they only converted one item.
Both teams played good football during the game and it was unfortunate that the title had to be decided on penalty kicks. Carapichaima went into the game as underdogs, as Presentation has dominated play between the two teams during the league phase, which they won.
The story looked the same yesterday, as after 25 minutes Presentation were on the scoresheet thanks to a fierce left footed strike from Marvin Manswell. Carapichaima fought back but were denied by Presentation defense who were almost impenetrable.
The teams went in at the half with Presentation enjoying the upper hand, however on the resumption, Carapichaima picked up their game a notch and were rewarded in the 66th minute when Bobby Sookraj stabbed in from close range.
Both teams then pressed hard for the winner but it never came and after 90 minutes play they were locked at 1-1. The same was the story during the 20-minute extra-time and penalty kicks had to determine the champions.
