Tuco to pay stations to play calypso

By Wayne Bowman (Trinidad Express)

President of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation, Michael "Protector" Leggerton, on Friday declared that Tuco is on a mission to take control of local radio through the purchase of airtime at all radio stations and demanding that only kaiso be played in their slots.

Speaking at an awards ceremony for the D'Unique Calypso Theatre, Two J's Pub, Norfolk Street, Belmont, Leggerton vowed that he will force all local radio stations to play calypso through the use of the organisation's financial resources.

"Tuco will purchase airtime on all radio stations so they can't say that they not playing kaiso because we buying programmes and we saying we want kaiso played on our programme slots. We paying for the airtime and so we demand that they play our music. We as calypsonians have to come together and force them into playing our music by giving them no chance to say they not playing it," Leggerton said.

Leggerton also announced that Tuco is constructing its own recording studios at Jerningham Avenue, Belmont, on the compound of the organisation's business unit.

He said the studio will provide first-class facilities for artistes who up to now have been unable to produce quality work because they could not afford the rates at the major recording studios.

He added that, once the Tuco studios are up and running, the radio stations will not be able to use the excuse that the sound quality of the work being presented by the calypsonians is too poor for broadcast. He said the facility will feature the most up-to-date technology as well as experienced personnel, producing the highest quality product possible.

"The radio stations throw CDs into the wastepaper basket, saying that the quality of the work is substandard. Now they will no such excuse because we will have a first-class production facility," Leggerton said.

Leggerton also informed the guests, which included Minister of Culture Joan Yuille-Williams, that from next month, Tuco will begin to produce a series of bi-weekly calypso shows at Two J's Pub in an effort to provide a year-round platform for the calypsonians.

He added that the organisation will eventually produce such events at other community venues across the country, including Tobago.
