House of Dread lose EFA title

Thursday, December 1st 2005

A $4,500 fine and a three-point deduction have cost House of Dread the Eastern Football Association (EFA) league title.

The sanction was handed down by the disciplinary committee of the Eastern Football Association, which concluded that House of Dread wilfully defaulted a game against WASA Clean & White last Saturday.

According to an EFA release, House of Dread called the association's secretary, Neville Ferguson, and subsequently the association's vice-president, Vernon Bain, requesting a postponement of their scheduled fixture as the club was involved in a match in a minor league competition and that House of Dread were virtually assured of capturing the Emerald Apartments and Plaza-sponsored Eastern Football Association league title.

The club hinted that the game would be defaulted.

Both Ferguson and Bain refused to entertain such a request and the club was instructed to play the EFA scheduled match.

EFA officials pointed out that the match schedule was in House of Dread's possession long in advance and the default meant that WASA Clean & White did not have an opportunity to overtake House of Dread for league honours.

The default also ensured that T&T Coast Guard could place no higher than third at the end of the final round of matches.

At their meeting, members of the EFA disciplinary committee unanimously agreed that because House of Dread had been virtually assured of winning the Association's league competition, they chose to participate in the minor league final, which had $20,000 in prize money at stake.

House of Dread were charged with bringing the Eastern Football Association into disrepute and wilfully neglecting the instructions given by EFA officals.

House of Dread received the following sanctions: The game be awarded to WASA Clean & White with a 3-0 score; Three additional points be deducted from their tally of points; and the club was fined the sum of $4,500
