The upgraded and floodlit Guapo Recreation Ground, Guapo, was opened last week Saturday by Roger Boynes, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, who was accompanied by the CEO of the Sports Company of T&T, Ken Butcher.
The ground can now be used for night cricket and football.
The programme included a match between a Police XI and a Community team which Police won 2-1.
The Minister later launched the Keno Shade Soccer Clinic, named after a young player who died in a league match.
The Minister said that consideration would be given to establishing a scholarship in Shade’s name.
Ray Brathwaite, Chief Executive Officer of SWMCOL, lauded the Ministry for its community sporting programmes.
Commissioner Trevor Paul, who is from the community, emphasised the value of sport in crime prevention.
Minister Boynes mentioned national football stars who had emerged from the area, including Warren Archibald and Leroy De Leon and the contribution of Alvin Daniel in athletics.
He said that $120m has been allocated for the upgrade of facilities across the nation and that Guapo was among those to benefit early. Government had also put $85M into the Community Sport Programme for developmental assistance for coaches and players in the communities.
The minister emphasised that by focusing on communities, he was certain that talent would be unearthed and the young Bovells, Laras and Latapys would arise and Trinidad and Tobago would continue to stun the world
