T&T Government and sports
« on: June 11, 2005, 09:50:26 AM »
Ladies and Gentle I have a major concern about the currant crime situation in Trinidad now this not an attempt to bash any government because to me they all the same try to divide the country with issue about race.
The present Government has a development plan for 2010 to be a modernize country, with next year budget 27 billon!!!! Yes 27 billon yet our footballers and sports men in general have to beg for money, this is the most disturbing because sports can unite the country better the any other facet of society investing in sports is a win win situation.
The Pro is essential to our society right now because young players can earn a live by playing football, with Basketball and Cricket attempting to become Pro its a very good opportunity for more youths to peruse there dreams of becoming the next Yorke, Lara or Jordan.
My question is why after all theses years off begging the Government can’t increase the amount off money in their budget for sports?

Well I have to say it sound like Lincoln has been able to get moeny for his youth programs.  At least it seem so, he might be still waiting on approval for some.  They seem comfortable funding youth programs but a little skeptical about funding World Cup drives and short term expenses for tournaments.  That is like a case by case basis and dependent on how the "vibes" they getting from the public....so if we losing they not helping.

27 billion you say?  How much it was last year?

Me and some brethren does have this discussion almost every year.  Before we forward to the future let me ask this question?

Anybody know what was budgeted for last year and how much money was spent and where the balance (if one existed since most likely it was stolen) end up???

Every year we have a budget but no one ever takes the time to hold men in office accountable for what was in last years budget.  Fact is most man doh have a clue what was in last years budget!!

There is a reason why in Developing countries there is a rich feeding ground for corruption, we don't hold elected officials responsible for a thing and we palpable to neglect.  A man looking for office could drive thru yuh little village and promise yuh running water and lights after the elections, then five years later when he looking to be re-elected he coming back making the same promises and the same people cheering him on.  Whais dah one boy?? ??? ???  Men in office constantly talking about race in every discussion trying to hide the wrong doings around them. Then the media (which in a free society is one of the checks and balances)  is totally inept in doing any serious form of investigative journalism to educate the public because they are part of the problem (most media is about making money now anyway).  Then we see the youths and dem running a mok in the society and we ask why???  Trickle down effect.

This thing we talking about here goes way beyond sports in general.  Nice discussion but leh we doh go to far into that discussion on this board since this forum does ease some men worries for Trinidad and Tobago (especially mine after I read the papers).

$3b increase for budget

Richard Lord richardlord@trinidadexpress.com

Saturday, June 11th 2005

GOVERNMENT yesterday moved to increase the record $27 billion 2005/2006 Budget by more than $3 billion.

The proposed increase is contained in the Finance (Supplementation and Variation of Appropriation) Bill 2005, which was presented by Minister in the Ministry of Finance Conrad Enill in the House of Representatives yesterday.

The legislation provides for increases of more than $650 million to the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries; $419 million to the Ministry of Health; $416 million to Works and Transport; $348 to Finance; $239 million to Local Government and more than $160 million to National Security.

The smallest increase went to the Ministry of Social Development-$875,000.

The Bill provides for a $15 million decrease to the Ministry of Trade and $110,000 from the Industrial Court.

Meanwhile, at a meeting of the Finance Committee on Wednesday, approval was granted for the write-off of losses totalling $346,391.31 for the year 2004. A breakdown lists the Tobago House of Assembly for overpayment of salary in the sum of $41,803.67; Ministry of Education for overpayment of salary in the sum of $119,172.71; Ministry of Health for overpayment of upkeep allowance in the sum of $48,149.44; and Ministry of Works and Transport for fraud in the sum of $137,265.49.

In presenting the legislation, Enill dismissed claims by some in the society who would suggest that Government was "spending at a level that is unsustainable".

But former finance minister Gerald Yetming, in his response, was very critical of the move, describing it as "madness".

He said that while some increases might appear justified, there was nothing to show that the population was benefiting from the expenditure.

"When, on this supplementary (Bill) of $3 billion we go line by line, each line when you look at it in isolation looks reasonable, it makes sense; but looked at from a more critical perspective, looked at from the overall, there is absolute madness going on in this country with the people's money."

Yetming also slammed the Government for its attitude of seeking to "mash up" everything. He said the Government has mashed up Caroni (1975) Ltd, National Broadcasting Network (NBN), the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago and other institutions in this country.

What role does the Government have in sports in the country?

Except for the allocation of funds through the ministry?

I do agree thogh that if youth are heavily involved in sports they seem less inclined to rob, steal and do drugs.

If T&T spending dat kinda money we should have things running smoothly.

Nuff money, but no real trickle down effect.

Sports play key role in unity—PM

BY RADHICA SOOKRAJ

Prime Minister Patrick Manning has urged young people to get involved in sports in a bid to unite the country and to bring international glory to their homeland.

Speaking at the launch of the National Community Basketball Southern Championship at the Pleasantville Indoor Multi-purpose Complex on Saturday, Manning said sporting achievements have put T&T onto the international market in a way that has never been done before.

“If we had any doubt about the value of sports in national development, let us focus on the recent achievements of the Soca Warriors,” Manning said, referring to the national football team’s qualification for the World Cup in Germany next June.

He said when the Warriors returned to Trinidad after defeating Bahrain for the World Cup spot, the nation came together in a way that the politicians had tried for years to achieve.

“That day was a great day, to see people of all walks of life, different parts of the country, different ethnic backgrounds and social groups, coming together for one purpose,” Manning said.

He said sports work well in a plural society and was a dominating and powerful unifying force.

Manning said because of this, Government has acknowledged the value of sports and have now included it in the national schools curriculum.

“We recognise two aspects in the development of our nation, the development of island performance sports as well as international sports,” Manning said.

He explained that for the development of sports, Government needed to get a wide cross-section of the national community involved.

He said students who play sports are not only fit academically, but emotionally, and psychologically as well.

Manning added that sport development is also an option for those students who are not academically inclined.

Manning praised the president of the Progressive Basketball Association Leroy Cooper for organising the championship.

He said the partnership of the Government and the community was an essential ingredient for nation building.

“As the community progresses so, too, will the Government,” Manning said.

Chairman of the National Sports Company Gerard Ferreira urged young people to become involved in the championships and to ensure that basketball games grow throughout the communities.
