Trini parang heats up Toronto

Wearing the Santa hat at centre, Alicia Sealy and members of Toronto parang band Los Ketchos Assos.

When Denyse Plummer called me from Toronto, on Sunday, the temperature was way below zero but a bunch of true true Trinis found a way to heat up the Canadian city. Including former beauty Alicia Sealy, the group, calling themselves Los Ketchos Assos, had a rollicking time playing parang music, even going from house-to-house, just like back home indoors; yes, in sub-zero temperatures.

Via e-mail, Alicia told me: “Just like North American Carollers, we sing for our supper. Los Ketchos Assos' repertoire comprises mostly traditional, Spanish parang songs, and we performed at four homes from noon to 11 pm on December 21. Boy, did we have fun. “I have to admit that, while performing, we all truly forgot that it was very cold and windy outside.” Also involved in the annual Caribana Festival, Alicia added: “Mark your calendars—the 2009 Scotiabank Caribana™ Parade will be on August 1, 2009.”

In an interview some years ago, Sprang revealed that this song was made up on the spot in the studio to fill up some space on the CD he was making.....it really sounds like the kinda things Sprang would say off the top of his head when telling jokes....

Anyone know where ah could find Trini Christmas music to download? Ah doh mind getting songs individually, but the real deal would be to get some mixes that have the old to the new. Ah was home two weeks ago and meh mistake was not picking up some music and bringing it back.
