Cox Is Hoping For Festive Success
« on: December 29, 2005, 05:08:21 AM »
By Mark Mitchener

Defender Ian Cox hopes Gillingham can shake off their unwanted nine-month run without an away win as they enter the busy festive fixture programme.

"Everyone is aware we haven't won away all season, but there's no point in moping around," Cox told BBC Sport.

"The place is still upbeat - and hopefully with the hard work that we've been doing on the training ground, something will give.

"Hopefully we can get that elusive away win sooner rather than later."

The Gills' last success on the road came on 5 March as they won 3-1 at Rotherham, although both sides finished in the Championship's relegation zone at the end of the season.

Cox nearly tasted victory at his old club Bournemouth last Saturday - but after taking the lead on the hour, Ronnie Jepson's side were eventually beaten 2-1 after conceding a goal in the second minute of stoppage time.

"Losing at Bournemouth was a bitter pill to swallow, especially with it being nearly the last kick of the game, as we felt we were worthy of at least a point, if not all three," the 34-year-old said.

"The boys did themselves proud, but we just got punished for two lapses of concentration.

"We picked up maximum points from our last two home games, so we'd have liked to have kept our run going, but it wasn't to be.

"But there were a lot of positives to take out of the game from the way we went about our jobs.

"The new manager has added more discipline on and off the pitch - his emphasis is on working hard and playing at a high tempo.

"We need to take that into the Boxing Day game against Bristol City, and pick up some points there."

After hosting City, the Gills visit leaders Swansea, before hosting Milton Keynes Dons on New Year's Eve - and then hit the road again with two trips to Yorkshire, against Huddersfield and Barnsley.

But Cox insisted: "I don't think it matters who we play.

"We'll address each game as it comes up, so the most important game for us at the moment is the Bristol City game.

"Once that's over, we'll focus on the next game, although there are a lot of points to be had in a short space of time over Christmas, so it could be that you pull yourself away from the drop zone.

"We've got to be in a positive frame of mind, as it's quite an open division.

"Swansea have been near the top for most of the season. Southend were flying, but they seem to have come a bit unstuck, and Brentford seem to be hitting a bit of form.

"But from the play-off spots downwards, it does seem to be anyone's game. It's just a case of getting a few wins under your belt, nick a draw here and there, and getting a run together."
