Finding out Jack
By Lasana Liburd (Trinidad Express)

The Trinidad and Tobago national football team had hoped for a better Christmas season.

Six weeks ago, the self-titled "Soca Warriors" created history by qualifying for their first senior FIFA World Cup tournament and, in the process, became the smallest country ever to play at such a high level.

But there was nothing in team captain Dwight Yorke and his teammates' stockings on Christmas Day. Not so much as a "Happy Christmas" card.

Bonuses and tangible signs of appreciation might still be on their way to the national football team. But, on the evidence of the past month, the visual picture of the country's sporting heroes has become blurred.

On November 16, the Trinidad and Tobago footballers beat Bahrain1-0 to snatch a spot in the 2006 World Cup tournament in Germany. Yet, it is FIFA vice-president and Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF) special adviser Jack Warner and his cohorts who appear to be making the lucrative lap of honour..

Warner stands to considerably enhance his personal wealth from the success of the country's football team even before a fitting tribute is paid to the players. It goes against the principle of sport administration, which is catered towards serving the athlete.

The manner in which contracts were passed out-and, in particular, a deal authorising Simpaul Travel to act as the T&TFF's official ticket distributor-without public tender is particularly disturbing.

Eyebrows were sure to be raised when the T&TFF handed such a plum contract exclusively to Simpaul, which is owned by Warner and his wife, Maureen, and sons, Daryan and Darryl.

The Trinidad and Tobago public needed convincing that Simpaul was indeed the best organisation to distribute tickets and the interests of football fans were sacrosanct.

Instead, Warner announced Simpaul's coup at a press conference without once mentioning that he was a company director while Simpaul official Gerald Baptiste and T&TFF president Oliver Camps also pleaded ignorance of the fact.

And worse, fans interested in purchasing World Cup tickets at a street value ranging between $780 and $2,254 were told to pay $30,000.

For Warner and the Trinidad and Tobago public, it is the continuation of a love-hate relationship that stretches back almost two decades.

In 1989, Warner-as he later admitted in his biography-printed 16,500 additional tickets for the country's crucial 1990 World Cup qualifying match against the United States despite repeated claims to the contrary at the time. It created a potentially dangerous situation at Port of Spain's National Stadium which was overfilled while thousands of fans with paid tickets were unable to get inside.

Warner claimed he was not trying to cash in on the success of the football team, who were then referred to as the "Strike Squad".

The team then comprised of mostly local-based amateur players who went unpaid.

A promise of housing for players by the ruling NAR party went unfulfilled as did a deal for a share of gate receipts in the aftermath of the failed 1990 campaign. At present, retired magistrate George Hislop, whose son Shaka is a current national player, claims that the Strike Squad is still owed $100,000 from the local organising body.

Four years ago, Trinidad and Tobago was again dizzy from World Cup fever as the country staged the 2001 FIFA Under-17 Youth Championship.

Warner was a key member of T&T's bidding committee to host the tournament, which brought talented young players like Florent Sinama Pongolle (Liverpool/France), Carlos Tevez (Corinthians/Argentina) and Fernando Torres (Atletico Madrid/Spain) to local shores.

Again, controversy swirled around his family businesses such as Simpaul Travel, De Coal Pot and the Emerald Plaza Hotel which copped lucrative deals while his son, Darryl, landed a handsome IT contract supplying internet kiosks to all five stadia.

Warner, the deputy chairman of FIFA's Finance Committee, is known internationally for his wheeling and dealings as well.

From 1984 to 1998, under ex-FIFA president Joao Havelange, Warner received television rights for the Caribbean region for just $1 which he sold on to regional television stations.

Warner stands to earn much more from Trinidad and Tobago's participation in Germany. His right to make a living for himself and his family is unquestioned.

Yet surely, Warner's position within FIFA and the T&TFF should make him especially careful not to give the impression of someone abusing his influence for personal gain.

The average Trinidad and Tobago football fan is caught in the crossroads.

Trinidad and Tobago's focus on the 2006 World Cup has shifted from two dozen talented, determined players and an expectant nation to an administrator. Fans might be more concerned about Simpaul than England's Steven Gerrard.

The powers-that-be should ensure that T&T's World Cup dream does not become a nightmare long before the first ball is kicked.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

Well, well well.  What is missing from lasana's expose is the allegatons of pay offs from both Japan and Korea  which allowed the unprecedented sharing of the world cup hosting by two nations.

I heard from a little birdie that it was Korean and perhaps Japanese yen that financed the Center of Excellence and also landed Austin a hefty pay day as well.

And to think this man has political rank in T&T...wow!

Also Lasana has failed to mention the current pay-offs from broadcast rights during the last two qualifiers in POS and Bahrain.

The TTFF announced that they only earned $80,000 TT ...!

How can this be especially since this game was shown all over the world.

Does Mr. Warner also own those rights?

I telling allyuh fuh years now...T&T Football suffers becasue ah dis man and his cronies/minions.

We shoulda make 3 world cup already!  And now that we have made it..what next?

no warms up finalized as yet.  ld talk and promises as usual.

And what about the state of club football in T&T?

STEUPS!

Yet some continue to praise him, say shit like is business...is shrewd manipulating etd.

f**keries!

Yow Rotato...ah see yuh hide yuh website, hide yuh email , take down yuh picture and put up ah leopard...dat real suit you in trute.

A LEOPARD cyar change he spots doh.

 ;) ;) ;) ;)

Yuh know what ah mean?

Simple resolution to this thing:

Don't buy any packages from Simpauls until the people of T&T get a proper explanation from Mr. Warner and the TTFF.

That's all.....

I sent this letter today to FIFA with the article attached.

Mrs. McAulay

I wanted to share this with you. The People of Trinidad and Tobago are truly frustrated with the present situation. We have no idea as to what is going on with our ticket situation and we are currently putting together all the info we have to form a law suit against the TTFF. We understand that Mr Warner has a lot of power in FIFA and there are some that believe that you all will do nothing because of his position. But my question is who will guard the guards and who protects the citizens if the guards are out of control? There are many letters like this that has been sent to the TTFF asking as to what is going and reporters ask direct questions to the powers that be but only to get the response “no comment”

Please if you can give us some hope as to what is being done so far and where do we stand.

I'm not from Trinidad so I don't know all the ins and outs of TTFF, but from what I was reading regional teams have voting rights - used to be lower level teams did, too, but were stripped of that privaledge under Jack's watch.  So is it possible to start impressing on the regional teams the need to vote out the bad influence? This is for longer term, of course. Won't help in getting tickets now, but for the future of the game in Trinidad.

FIFA CRISIS: PRESIDENT'S CORRUPTION PLEDGE
THREATHENS KEY ALLIES IN CONCACAF

By: Andrew Jennings

In an historic about-turn FIFA President Sepp Blatter has ordered an investigation into ballot rigging that could lead to some of his closest allies being banned from world football for life.

Last year Sportsmail revealed how FIFA vice-president Jack Warner from Trinidad had presided over incidents at two FIFA congresses where absent delegates were impersonated at the ballot box by his associates. On the second occasion the extra vote helped Blatter win power. Repeatedly Blatter refused to acknowledge any corruption. But when challenged again by Sportsmail this week he admitted, in an emotional outburst, that "mistakes had been made and now I will take action."

Sportsmail's dossier will be handed over to the FIFA discipline committee "as soon as possible." A Blatter spokesman confirmed later that Blatter will request the committee, at its next meeting in March, to begin an investigation.

After a long investigation published last April Sportsmail revealed, with the help of video tapes and internal FIFA documents, how delegates from the Caribbean had conspired to steal votes.

Sportsmail travelled to Haiti and secured an exclusive interview with the former head of the national football association, Dr Jean-Marie Kyss. He disclosed that he had been unable to make the trip to the FIFA congress in Zurich in 1996. He said: "I phoned CONCACAF (the Caribbean and North America soccer confederation presided over by Warner) and Zurich and told them I was unable to attend."

Dr Kyss thought that was the end of the matter. But FIFA records obtained by Sportsmail revealed that a delegate by the name of Vincy Jalal had voted as Haiti's representative. Further inquiries disclosed that this was the girlfriend of Horace Burrell, president of the Jamaican association.

The scam amused many delegates from the region who ever since have referred to Ms Jalal as "Ms Oui" because that was the word she had been coached to utter when French-speaking Haiti's name was announced at the roll-call of delegates.

Despite repeated inquiries by Sportsmail, Burrell, Ms Jalal, Warner and his CONCACAF general secretary Chuck Blazer, also a member of FIFA's Executive Committee, have declined to give any comment.

A personal assistant pretended to be from Haiti

A Haitian delegation was also absent from the next FIFA congress in Paris in 1998 where Blatter beat the UEFA candidate Lennart Johansson to take the presidency.

Dr Kyss explained that at the time a Government minister was trying to seize the national stadium in the capital, Port au Prince - and was prepared to use any means to pressurise the association to capitulate. "When I got to the airport with my wife I was told that I was not permitted to leave the country," he said. "I asked, 'have I committed any crime?' They said it was the order of the Secretary of Sport and took my passport away."

From the airport Dr Kyss called officials of CONCACAF, already gathered in Paris. "I spoke to secretary Chuck Blazer and president Jack Warner. I explained to Mr Warner what had happened and told him that Haiti would not be represented at the FIFA congress. "FIFA's rules do not allow proxy voting - but I did not want to mandate anyone to sit in our seat in Paris. That empty chair symbolised the interference of our government in our sport. It was our gesture of defiance. It sent a powerful message to the world."

Dr Kyss was shocked to learn from Sportsmail that his gesture and his vote had been stolen. FIFA's records show that a Mr Neville Ferguson represented Haiti. Ferguson, like Ms Jalal, is not from Haiti. He is a citizen of Trinidad - and personal assistant to Jack Warner.

Sportsmail acquired a copy of the official videotape of the congress which showed Ferguson pretending to be from Haiti, collecting his ballot paper from the scrutineers and going into a booth to cast Haiti's vote. After our disclosures this tape, and our taped interview with Dr Kyss, were transmitted world-wide.

FIFA's vice president is under threat

Warner's future in world football must now be under threat. It is inconceivable that a lowly official like Ferguson would have impersonated the Haitian delegate without Warner knowing. Indeed it is easy to believe that Warner, who had pledged his support to Blatter, told Ferguson to break the rules.

Blatter now has the chance to get rid of Warner, notorious for diverting FIFA business to himself and his family. The same fate must apply to Blazer who was told by Dr Kyss that Haiti's seat in Paris would be vacant. It is difficult to accept that Blazer, like Warner, failed to notice Haiti's vote being abused.

Blatter denies that he had any knowledge of the vote rigging. If he keeps his word and if the chairman of FIFA's Discipline Committee, his longterm friend, Swiss lawyer Marcel Mathier, carries out a rigorous investigation, the clear-out at FIFA could be sensational.

Blatter also announced that Jamaica's Horal Burrell, a member of the discipline committee, will be forbidden to participate. So gross were the offences and so publicly perpetrated that heads should roll at all levels. Delegations at FIFA congresses are seated in alphabetical order so Warner's allies from Guyana, Honduras and Jamaica could not have been unaware of the fraud.

If Blatter is serious in his claim that he intends to clean up FIFA, he has made the right start. But only when heads are seen to roll can world football be confident that FIFA's shabby, often corrupt ways, are coming to an end.

Blatter also announced that Jamaica's Horal Burrell, a member of the discipline committee, will be forbidden to participate. So gross were the offences and so publicly perpetrated that heads should roll at all levels.

allyuh see how long dis ting goin on, an how deep it runnin? Dr. Kyss, we own version of Ollie Camps was actually willing to take a stand against gov't interference in dey football, an JW (although probably unknowingly) throw sand in dey rice! Official videotapes exist and are in the public domain capturing his corrupt behaviour at its highest level, yet men still willing to turn a blind eye, since we goin WC, partly bcuz ah some ah dem same wheelin & dealin.Think about it. Dah is like d Pope killing he mudder an men sayin he go end up in heaven bcuz he is de Pope! to all de "jack backers", i hah nutten personal wit anybody, buh allyuh really willin to sell allyuh soul for thirty pieces ah silver?

ah tryin not to go dong de politics road, buh it glaring. JW like ring on finger wit ah nex man who publicly say he go sleep wid d , an who claim dat "politics has a morality of its own".

Wha more allyuh want to see de light......
if yuh check mih heart in mih chest, mix up wit d'red blood, it have a black & white stripe somewhere in dey!.....long b4 foot ball, durin' world cup and after..T&T FOREVER! WE COUNTRY, WE SPIRIT,WE VIBES! WARRIOR NATION!

Good luck to Trinidad in there campaign against Bahrain. Jamaicans need to take a lesson out of Trinidad book 'stick to the evil that you know best' (Jack Warner). Trust me if Burrell was in office the Jamaica Football program would not have been in this quagmire. Australia beating us so badly only drive a nail in our coffin on the international circuit as we are going to find it very difficult to get high quality teams to play against.

sad but for the short term true, at least you do have a jack-a$$ in the top of FIFA, most countries don't.

Blatter also announced that Jamaica's Horal Burrell, a member of the discipline committee, will be forbidden to participate. -I wonder how could this man be so stupid to go into the discipline committee  or did JW had him signed up for that ? I guess if they make you member of that committee is like the kiss of death, quickly fix your bank account your time is up at FIFA . Is he still friends with JW ?

What a fuzz
But it is nothing compared to what happend before. ( old news from 2003)
And who got punnished ?
.....OUI....JAMAICA yess not JAck but Burnell got the embarrasment so give Reagge Fan a break from now.

How did they punish Burrell? Burrell still holds a position on FIFA's disciplinary committee, a position that was handed to him by Jack Warner no doubt :-\. The only time I heard Burrell's name mention was when the claim his "alleged" girfriend "miss Oui" misrepresented Haiti. Not sure if you can punish a man fior the crimes of his "alleged" GF. And what about that Trinidadian guy who actually casted the vote. Seems he is the real one who is in hot water, seeing that he was the one who carried out the bogus voting.

I bet there is much more uncovered stories out there regrading Warners wealings and dealings.  >:(

Miss Oui.

I eh buy that story from Kyss that Oh he shocked  ::)

Anybody who doubt politics have a morality of its own just need to look at Fifa and our own political landscape.
Any politician who says otherwise is a bold faced liar.

It not acceptable but it is what it is and we have it so.
As for Fifa...if JW want to get down and dirty with them to get our share that is one thing.
But when he bringing that duttyness home.....well....I guess to expect otherwise is naive.
I guess JA in the ideal position where they reap the benefits with less of the baggage he brings.

It is the same with politics at home.  There is no-one strong enough to effect change.  They either unable to get the support they need or they unwilling to roll in the mud to win the fight.  Still others jump in with good intentions but never get the mud out dey eye.
I  wonder if Big Marv  could have a talk with JW

Guys you know what,I have given this some thought and I think the problem with Jack Warner is not that he and the devil  is bed-fellows and conspiraring to rob us blind but he wears the cap of business man, sports administrator and politician all at once. The man has been at the helm of TNT football for years now and he has benefitted immensely from this. But he has also given alot back to the our nation both in terms  of his perosnal time and more importantly in terms of his financial resources. How many times has he reached into his pockets to meet hotel costs or airfare when the TNT governemnt fell short? His contribution cannot be questioned but his ethics can be. Due to the fact he fills all these positions concurrently this presents a situation where conflict of interest arises. Mr Warner you need to make a choice either you are a business man, a politician or public administrator.

How did they punish Burrell? read above last line ( he got the blame not JW)Burrell still holds a position on FIFA's disciplinary committee, :rotfl:that is the worst place to be in FiFA, they can aways say you didn't do your job..a position that was handed to him by Jack Warner no doubt :-\. The only time I heard Burrell's name mention was when the claim his "alleged" girfriend "miss Oui" misrepresented Haiti. Not sure if you can punish a man fior the crimes of his "alleged" GF. Thats my point Blatter offered Burell to protect himself with the help of JW & Mohammed, his close allies that aways get this joker re-ellected.

I have said it before, and i will say it again - Mr Warner is on his way out. Trinidad football will rise up again when warner moves on. Fans will return to the games, players will want to play again, clubs will have a say once more. Glory is around the corner  ;D :beermug: :beermug:

Lets do like the late Rosa Parks and take a stand because we may never know what would have happened if she had gave up her seat on the bus.

There is no list of ALL the black ppl who rode the bus. History favours those who have the balls to change the present.

We must do more than talk! trini doh have to wait fuh FIFA to fix tings fuh we. if we make nuff noise in the media over the next few days Warner will get the message. it already reachin dem. we just have to make it loud and clear. so while you typin on this site send email to the papers, call the tv station, call T&TFF, Simpaul.

somebody give us a bona fide email address for the TTFF and one ah Warner companies.... if we flood them and the media with a message from hundreds of fans.......  they go geh d mssg.

GO WARRIORS   ----- yes! ah talkin to ullyuh on dis site. GO!  :-\
Is it more important to make a dollar or make a difference??
Are you gonna talk it or walk it?
Change your focus. Change your world.
((buh doh take y'self too serious nah!!)) :-)
