T&T in goalless draw with Barbados

Trinidad and Tobago's senior footballers will be aiming to bounce back from Thursday's 0-0 draw with Barbados when they tackle Taiwan's senior team on the second day of action in the annual St Kitts/Nevis Sugarbowl festival tournament tomorrow (Saturday) at Warner Park  from 6pm.
T&T arrived in St Kitts at 3pm on Thursday, three hours after their original scheduled arrival of 12:30pm,  following engine problems with an aircraft on the runway which kept the team back for six hours in St Vincent and the Grenadines, on the way to their final destination.

The game carded for 6pm was then pushed back to 7pm to accommodate the "Soca Warriors" who reportedly gave a decent account of themselves and should have come away with the win at Warner Park.

Captained by former Scottish-based midfielder Lyndon "Chubby" Andrews, T&T, according to coach Clayton Morris, allowed the opposition to come at them in the first half but were hardly threatened as the defence marshaled by Anthony Noreiga, and including Keyeno Thomas and Anton Pierre, was solid throughout.

"We used this first game as a chance to see really what some of the players were capable of and I must say I was satisfied with the way they handled the game under the circumstances regarding the traveling and the shortage of training sessions before the game," Morris said.

"Barbados as usual always play sort of rough but they tried to play a skilled game in that they were playing the ball around and building from the back but there was hardly anyway through for them. Our midfield was breaking the plays down well and even if they got by the middle, we were cleaning things up at the back," the former national skipper explained.

T&T created a decent amount of scoring chances but should have made better use of two in particular with Andre Toussaint and second half substitute Silvio Spann being the guilty ones.

On 40 minutes, Josh Johnson whipped a cross in from the right side and Toussaint met it well but saw his header rebound off the right post with the 'keeper well beaten.

Spann's chance was more of a gift as he got the ball just outside the six yard box and though maintaining his composure, he could only direct his effort straight onto the legs of the Barbados custodian.

Morris mentioned that he was  pleased with the display of the players, particularly Andrews.

"Lyndon gave a really good display. He seemed to really coming back to himself which is good.

"This team has a lot of players with good potential and promise. They showed a lot of quality, purpose and played with pride and professionalism in this game but we  have to ensure that we can get the team playing some more international matches in order to continue the progress," added Morris, who made five second half changes during the match.

St Kitts/Nevis, under new Technical Director, Englishman Eric Winstanley, defeated Taiwan 3-0 on Thursday and will face Barbados in the second game of the double header at 8pm on Saturday.
