Mayaro Spurs took the lion’s share of the trophies at stake in the 2010 bpTT-Mayaro Football League during the league’s prize-distribution ceremony at the Mayaro Resource Centre on Sunday.

The dominant Spurs claimed victory in several divisions during the season, including the Senior League, Under-18 League and the Under-15 Knockout competitions.

Several of their players received individual accolades including goal keeper Erskin Johnson, who was voted Most Valuable Player of the Senior Division.

In bringing a close to the 2010 season, the ceremony also marked the 10th successive year that energy company bpTT had sponsored the league.

Ronda Francis, Manager, Corporate Responsibility, bpTT, encouraged the efforts of everyone involved in making the Mayaro Football League a success.

“In contributing to the development of Mayaro, attention must be paid to the holistic development of the individual.

That is why, apart from bpTT’s sponsorship of various academic programmes, we also sponsor football, cricket, netball, swimming and karate as well.

BPTT is proud of your achievements and we will continue to support sporting development in Mayaro,” Ms Francis affirmed.

Also addressing the function was national football coach Mohammed Isa, who motivated the players with his insightful message: “It is no secret that I boast about the quality of the Mayaro Football League to my coaching colleagues.

But as good as you are now I have to remind you that better can always be done. I challenge you to use this opportunity to improve your game and yourselves, and I look to the day when Mayaro can field the entire national football team.”

A total of 27 teams took part in all levels of the competition with many of them enjoying success at some level. Sherlon Campbell of Mayguaya United, selected as the Best Defender in the Senior Division, was high in praise for the league.

“Having played here for the past eight years, this league has given me the chance to develop as a player and a person. In every way, this league has benefited Mayaro and I look forward to it evolving further,” he said.

In closing the programme, Chairman of the Mayaro Football Association Razack Jan encouraged the players to reach even higher: “I can safely say that because of the unwavering support of our sponsor bpTT, Mayaro has the best domestic football league in the country.

But don’t stop there; I want the young athletes to raise their sights even higher and look to the national or even international level. It is up to you to lift football in Mayaro to even greater heights.”
