Veteran Trinidad and Tobago footballers Brian Williams and Michael Maurice this week announced their retirement from the game.

The dreadlocked Williams, a defender in the famous Strike Squad which lost 1-0 to the United States in their last World Cup qualifier in 1991, said he felt it was time to go but will be around to serve his country in any capacity.

"I have given my all for Trinidad and Tobago football, but a player has to know when to call it a day. However, I am still available in any capacity to help Trinidad and Tobago football progress. It is not the end for me in football. I love the game, I can't just walk away," Williams said.

Goalkeeper Maurice, who also played professionally in Costa Rica, was capped more than 100 times for Trinidad and Tobago and said he was quitting to make way for younger players.

"You have to know, when your time is up I think Trinidad and Tobago must look to the future and there are several good prospects out there, guys who will help the team. I am going because I know my replacements will do a good job. Age catches up to all of us," Maurice said.

Ken Henry, acting national coach on Trinidad's recent one match tour of Martinique, said the players were given an encouraging send off in the game against Martinique.

"When the news broke the team was inspired, and played really good football and we were able to earn a 1-1 draw", he said.
