A HAT-TRICK from captain Brent Sam propelled San Juan North Secondary to be crowned 2014 Coca Cola Intercol East Zone champions by holding off a persistent Trinity College East 3-2 in the final at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima yesterday.

Sam led the charge for his outfit and blanked Shawn Bonval’s two goals coming from the opposition.

San Juan North became the first team to capture its Zonal Intercol crown as the remaining finals will be contested today and tomorrow.

In action today, Naparima College are on the brink of repeating their historic 1999 triple-crown schools football title-haul but will have one final challenge to face at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, from 3.45 pm today, when they lock horns with St Benedict’s College in an anticipated Coca Cola Intercol South Zone final.

The Angus Eve-led unit has already captured the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) and Big Four trophies for the season thus far and is intent on retaining the hat-trick of titles, some 15 years later.

‘Naps’ have proven to be the most dominant force on the schools circuit this year and are favoured to win today’s encounter.

Speaking to head coach Eve yesterday, he revealed that today’s match will be approached like all of the team’s previous matches - with the sole intention of victory.

“We have a dedicated bunch of guys and they have been working really hard this year. A win today is our ultimate goal but the triple-crown would indeed be a pinnacle factor for me, the entire team and the school at large,” said Eve.

The former national player noted that his players have achieved a unique balance between their football and academics, a mix which has helped them progress through the season by succeeding in both disciplines. Also in action in their zonal finals today are Carapichaima East versus Chaguanas North (Central) at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, from 3.45 pm.

Tomorrow will see both finalists of the North Zone, St Mary’s and East Mucurapo, go for glory at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, from 4.30 pm.
