T&T overcomes Jamaica 4-2 on penalty kicks

The young and inexperienced Trinidad and Tobago squad decimated by injuries beat World Cup hopefuls Jamaica at the Antigua Recreation ground to advance to the Shell/Umbro cup. They beat Jamaica 4-2 on penalties to complete a come back from behind victory. Jamaica started well as they came out gunning for T&T. Jamaican strikers Whitmore and Hall gave the Trinidad and Tobago defense some anxious moments. On a counter attack winger Hall, drew the T&T defense out and crossed to Whitmore who headed passed T&T goalie Clayton Ince. The first half was dominated by the Jamaican's and provided little chances for T&T to get into the game. The T&T defense marshalled by Under 23 player Marvin Andrews and backed up by Clayton Ince stopped the Jamaicans cold. T&T had few chances in the first half, but poor finishing caused the score to be 0-1 at the end of the first half.

In the second half the tables began to turn as the New Strike Squad came out running at the Reggae Boyz. They raised their game significantly in the second half that drove the Jamaican's to the breaking point. In the 65th minute Marvin Andrews headed home a right side free kick from Angus Eve pass Jamaican custodian Arron Lawrence. T&T had many chances to go ahead but poor finishing and  the Jamaican back four came up with good efforts to keep the score 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

In sudden death over time, T&T continued their good run at the Jamaican defense. Captain David Nahkid hit a shot from just outside the six yard box that sailed over the cross bar. Dale Saunders a late addition to the squad sent the Jamaicans scampering with when his shot that beat the goalie hit the cross bar and was clear away by the Jamaican defense. Their was no score at the end of over time. Ansil Elcock missed the first penalty kick for T&T but Hutchinson, Nixon, Nahkid and Julien all beat Arron Lawrence to preserve the win for T&T. T&T now have a chance to win their sixth Caribbean title and their fourth in a row. They will face St. Kitts on Sunday for the title.
