Season Review - 2006 Soca Warriors
« on: June 15, 2007, 07:17:46 AM »
I had done this quite a while ago, but I didn't want it to get lost in the Gold Cup information.
Now that the "c-team is out of the Gold Cup, I figure this is the best moment to post it before i forget.

There will obviously be a few players missing for diverse reasons, but all in all, it should be a relatively complete statistical and subjective look at the majority of the key foreign based players in our world cup as well as some promising talents plying their trade in foreign shores pre and post World Cup. I apologise in advance for the British bias; but this is where the information is the easiest available.

Here goes...

Marvin “Dog” Andrews

SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2005-2006DS1Rangers50/5225272727301776431040
2006-2007 DS3Raith29/292250252525144740930

Andrew’s career seemed to go into a tailspin after the German adventure. Almost a guaranteed starter with the Soca Warriors, the defender who became famous for “faith healing” an ACL knee injury was forced to sit out the World Cup on the bench due to a recurrence of this same injury. After subsequently being informed that he was surplus to requirements by new Rangers coach, Paul Le Guen, Andrew’s career was in doubt.
However it would seem, as the now officially ordained reverend would say, “God takes care of his children” Divine intervention and a good word from Scottish Chancellor Craig Gordon saw him resign with his old club Raith Rovers, now in the Scottish League 2nd Division in exchange, in part for the setting up of the Marvin Andrews Youth Development Trust in Kircaldy. Nevertheless it is rumoured that he turned down a 3 year contract from new EPL promotees Reading, for fear of failing a medical. However, it is likely that Marvin did not wish to leave the Kircaldy Zion Praise Centre to which he is closely affiliated

On the field, Marvin would be a regular starter for Raith, exception made of a month of December following their Scottish cup exit to third division Dumbarton. His return from the bench coincided with a 6 match streak with no goals conceded (he would contribute to 9 in all) that would see them finishing third with the second best defensive record and qualify for the promotion playoffs. He also chipped in with 4 goals. Unfortunately, 2nd placed Stirling Albion would put paid to Raith’s dreams of promotion with a three goal raid in the second half of their second playoff tie

Kevin Austin

2005-2006DE3Swansea44/48256833293315131500842
2006-2007DE3Swansea40/48283732273616911001160

Not having lined up for TNT since 2001, Kevin Austin was always unlikely to figure in the World Cup. Nevertheless he was a standout in the Swan’s defense, pencilled in as a regular starter with the exception of two periods of about a month : one from the end of september to the end of october, and another from the end of February to the end of March. This second period was initiated by respiration problems (revealed to be the result of an irregular heartbeat) that forced him out of a match 20 minutes in. Coincidentally this was the first match of new manager Roberto Martinez, which may have explained that he was left out of the team for four matches even after he was cleared to play

Kevin would prove more disciplined this year than last card-wise but his 11 clean sheets would not be enough to gain the Swans a playoff spot, after losing the playoff finals on penalties the year before. They would finish one position off, falling hard to Blackpool 3-6 on the last day needing a big win. Kevin would sign a new one year deal with the Swans on the 2nd of June

2006-2007DE3Swansea49/504174474549231214501740

After his calm and composed defending in the centre of the Soca Warrior’s back line, Tallest signed with Swansea from Wrexham three games into the season and promptly settled in as a regular starter in the Swans’ central defense. His 17 clean sheets attest to the efficiency of the partnership with Kevin, but he equally became an unlikely source of goals (5) like with the Soca Warriors, scoring three in five games in a crazy month of December.

Ian Cox

SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2005-2006 DE3Gillingham40/4034674037401571801980
2006-2007 DE3Gillingham44/4830453532351561430432

Having never been more of a fringe player on the World Cup roster, not much could be expected from Cox’s excursion to Germany. Nevertheless, the Croydon born Soca Warrior remained a staple in the Gills defense. However, his unbridled aggressivity that earned him 8 yellows the year before, earned him two red cards in three games around the beginning of the year, that saw him punished with relegation to the bench for 2 months.
Despite being part of a fragile Gills back line that finished 17th with 77 goals conceded, his coach maintained his faith in him as part of the squad for 2007-2008.

Brent Sancho

2006-2007 DE3Gillingham34/421828211930941900320

After a strong start to the season in a starting spot on the back of his valiant, if unlucky world cup, like last year an injury would put Brent out. His 2 month forced rest would cost him his undisputed spot in the starting 11, pushing him to alternate between starting, being off the team, and being a late sub. However in the last month during the push to avoid relegation, the victim of the infamous “Hand of Crouch” seemed to lose Ronny Jepson’s confidence, and this was confirmed when both parties agreed by mutual consent not to renew his contract, ending a tumultuous 2 year relationship.

Kelvin Jack

2006-2007GE3Gillingham12/1299011111150600200

After his appearance against Paraguay in the Soca Warrior’s third game, Kelvin Jack made the switch from Scotland to England by joining Kevin Austin and Brent at Gillingham, with the team looking for an experienced keeper. However the same propensity to injury that kept him out of a third of his team’s games last season and forced him out of the match against Sweden, would rear its head again. The “Sexiest Goalkeeper of the World Cup 2006” would find himself forced to miss 80% of Gillingham’s matches, including all but one after the Christmas break.

Carlos “The Rolls Royce” Edwards

SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2005-2006ME2Luton45/48373542384618919261210
2006-2007ME2Sunderland45/4537714338452010151171320

Having established himself as a regular starting 90 minute man in the Hatter’s midfield shortly after his arrival to the newly Championship promoted Luton Town side, Carlos’ excellent world cup performance only solidfied this seniority on the team. A decent start to the season saw the offensive minded right back net 5 goals in 12 championship games. However, a 0-4 Carling Cup loss to premiership side Everton at the end of October marked the beginning of a severt downward spiral. After Luton defender Sol Davis suffered a stroke, the Hatters lost 5-0 at Ipswich and went on a 7 game losing streak, conceding 18 goals against 3 scored in the process. Carlos’ opener against Preston would help tham snap out of that negative spiral, but it became clearer that Luton would spend the new year fighting off relegation, and that they would do it without several of their better players coveted during the January transfer window, including Carlos. Rumours of interest by several clubs including Charlton Athletic culminated in a 1.5 million pound move to the then 10th placed Championship rivals, Dwight Yorke’s Sunderland.

Carlos’ glittering brand of football seemed to blossom with the Black Cats. The “Rolls Royce”, as he became to be known scored 5 goals and set up 4 others despite being out for the entire month of March with a shoulder injury, and would be an integral part of the Championship title winning team. His performances earned him a place on the English Professional Footballer’s association of the year, as well as the first three places in the goals of the Sunderland goals of the season as chosen by the Black Cats fan. Ironically, his last match of the season came against an already relegated Luton where the Hatters were demolished 5-0 at home. He set up the first goal in the 4th minute.

Clayton Ince

2005-2006GE2Coventry35/4136044420200200
2006-2007GE4Walsall51/53462051515126178012300

Having to play the unfortunate role of the third goalkeeper in the Soca Warrior’s trip to Germany may have made up Clayton’s mind to avoid the bench in the future, as he dropped a full 2 divisions to go with Walsall, freshly relegated to League Two.
Ince would shine with the Saddlers, notably starting the season with 9 consecutive clean sheets in league matches at home, and would finish with 23 clean sheets in the season.
Walsall would gain promotion, taking the League Two title in the process with the stingiest defence in all 4 divisions of English professional football outside of the three Champions League semi-finalists.

Hector Sam

2006-2007FE4Walsall50/5126603354723168722210

After spending most of the preceding season on crutches, Hector was released by League One’s Port Vale and signed, like Ince in a lower division on a free transfer to Wallsall. Although a regular starter on the team, Sam was never a 90 minute player. Despite being third highest scorer on the team with 7 goals, he found himself relegated to the role of substiute in the final drive for the division title. At the end of the season, he was released and signed with 13th placed Nott’s County, his fourth club in 4 seasons.

Chris “Me Mum” Birchall

SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2005-2006ME3PortVale34/3522782417341271522930
2006-2007 ME2Coventry42/491506181429941620600

Become TNT’s contribution to the feel good stories of the World Cup, Chris Birchall rode the wave of his performances to gain a transfer to the Championship, saying goodbye to his boyhod club Port Vale, and the league 1, and linking up to Stern John at Coventry in a 3 year deal in the process.

After 2 months as a 90 minute man, his late return from TNT’s 2 friendlies against St. Vincent and Panama seemed to put him in his coaches bad books. After this date, he would find himself restricted to late subsitute appearances, outright benching or even reserve team football.
The replacement of Adams by Ian Dowie in mid January would not alter this despite the “Staffordshire Terrier“ scoring his first goal for Coventry in the new coaches first match. It is rumoured that Coventry’s sparing use of his services were linked to Coventry’ unwillingness to have to shell out bonus payments to Port Vale based on the number of first team appearances with the Sky Blues of the former Valiant…
For some reason, Chris’ hard working defensive mid role in the TNT squad has never pleased any of his English managers who continue to use him as a winger, which in this author’s opinion considerably weakens the impact he can have on a match. Nevertheless, Coventry bought him as part of a greater development plan, so his future is still bright despite Coventrys extremely disappointing season (17th).

Stern "The Stern Turn" John

2006-2007FE2Coventry/Sun'land42/442766321741186171041320

Despite his disappointing World Cuo, Stern picked up right where he left off last season, scoring the winner in the Sky Blue’s first match against Sunderland. He acored at least a goal each month before an injury, picked up in mid november while on national duty, put him out for two weeks. This seemed to break his rhythm as he went scoreless and eventually unto the bench until January when he came on to score a late equaliser against league one Bristol City to force a replay.Nevertheless, Coventry seemed worried about his inconsistence and refused to give any indication about his future at the club.

The January transfer window would see Sunderland sign him. Stern would go on to score 4 goals in the 3 months at the Black Cats, but one always had the impression that unlike Carlos, he was more of a passenger on a train already en route than a veritable locomotive. He will need to be a lot more impressive to keep his place in Roy Keane’s team in the Premiership.

Despite not being selected for the trip to Germany, Shakes was able to maintain his place as an intergal part of the Swindon town team, as well as during the short tenure of Dennis Wise, as Paul Sturrock’s for most of the year. However the Brixton born midfielder unfortunately found himself off the team at the crucial moment for the promotion push after mid may when Swindon went on a 7-game unbeaten streak. He would later be informed by the manager that he would not be part of his plans for the 2007 season in League One  and is currently examining his options.

Initially, in his first season in the English professional football leagues, Josh had some trouble cementing a regaular spot on the League Two starting team. However, from mid November, the former TNT olympic team winger would start 10 consecutive matches and score his first Red’s goal to celebrate the New Year. However, the departure of manager Dennis Smith shortly thereafter but him back in the maddening spiral of reserve team football and the bench.

2006-2007FE2Southampton38/412376281238191181621221

At the beginning of the season, the young TNT striker, despite his world cup experience, was nothing more than a fringe striker way down in the pecking order at Southampton, scheduled to play early League Cup and FA Cup games, as well as to come off the bench in the dying minutes of the championship games. However, in his first full game of the season, he would score a goal in the 5-2 Carling Cup win over Yeovil that would prompt the Saints manager to start him 2 games later. Kenwyne would take exactly 3 minutes to get on the scoresheet. Started in the next match, he would score on Crystal Palace after 2. Gradually he would become an integral part of the team and finally went back to his old ways, notching 5 in nine games between November and Christmas

A boxing day red card would earn him a three match suspension that somewhat broke his rhythm. Nevertheless,he was back at it again, scoring 6 goals in 4 games from January 28th, including a losing effort FA Cup opener against Manchester City. An ankle injury would put him out for 6 weeks at the crucial moment for the push towards promotion, but he would return in time for the last game against Southend and score a double against Southend to help secure the last playoff spot.

His 16 goal haul would make him the second best Southampton scorer behind Polish international Gregorz Raziak. However, his injury bogey would return to haunt him, as he would limp off in the first leg of the playoff semifinal to Derby, and miss out the second leg against the team that wold ultimately promoted to the Premiership.

Russell “The Little Magician” Latapy

At 37, some wondered what kept Russell Latapy going. At 38, it would seem that participating in a World Cup has been like a fountain of youth for him. After his electrifying 20 minutes against Paraguay that still has certain fans cursing Leo Beenhakker for not playing him more/bringing him on sooner/letting him decide team tactics, Russel Latapy returned to the Bairns to weave another brand of more modest magic.

Named SPL Player of the month in August, partcularly devastating in engineering the 5-0 dismantling of Cowdenbeath in the CIS cup with three assists, Latapy played in 42 of Falkirk’s 44 games and started all but one of those. He appeared to fade in the second half of the season, as his team accumulated an 8 game losing streak from mid January to mid March. Nevertheless, they went unbeaten in 6 of their last 7 games to finish comfortably in midtable, while the little dread locked veteran would have a hand in 16 of their goals during the season.

Although an integral member of the Dundee Utd team, Colin Samuel has often had to be very flexible, having to deal with many different roles as a result of the manager’s rotation policy. As such, while he has featured in all of one of United’s games, he has never played more than four full games (between Christmas and New Year) even though he had 11 straight starts from December to the end of January. Despite scoring 5 goals, Colin’s employers concluded that his services as a left winger left to be desired as he was released at the end of the season. He is currently looking for a new club and rumoured to be joining Toronto FC in the MLS.

Despite not getting a chance to showcase his skills at the World Cup, Scotty would start the new season keen to equal his 16 goal haul in the Scottish 1st division last year. Initially he would pick up two doubles in two different cup competitions before opening his account in the league by a hatrick in St Johnstone’s emphatic 5-1 trouncing of Partick. All in all, from August to November, he would score 10 goals in 15 matches, as a systematic starter. A dry month of November would nevertheless see Saints beat Rangers to accede to the semifinals of the CIS cup. Despite a double against Dundee at the beginning of December, one would have to wait until mid january and a Scottish Cup replay against Ayr to see Scotty’s prolific form return. 8 goals in 8 games, including a losing effort in the CIS final against Hibs would maintain pressure on league leaders, Gretna. A 5 goal blitz in 4 game from mid-may, including a 2-0 blanking of Gretna would put Saints back hot on Gretna’s heels. Even a Scottish cup semi-final loss to Celtic would not sap the Saints resolve as they went on to win their last 3 games. The championship went down to the line as Scotty scored in a thrilling 4-3 win over Hamilton that only failed to assure the Saint’s promotion because of a 90 minute James Grady goal at Ross county.

Despite this heartbreak, Scotlands extraordinary 26 goal season which earned him a place on the Scottish first division team of the year and second place in the First Division Player of the Year, saw him linked with Birmingham, Dundee United and Hearts before signing for Swansea on the 25th of May, pending success of his work permit application.

2006-2007GE2Leeds/Ful./Nor.44/512520282828941500620

Anthony Warner had a pretty up and down season. After not being retained on the TNT World Cup team, he started his season by being loaned out to Leeds in the Championship. Initially starting keeper, he found himself on the bench by the end of September and only regained his spot four games before the end of his deal.
He would feature in only one match with Fulham, (4-3 FA cup tie against Leicester) before being loaned out a second time in March to Norwich.
This would be considered as a disappointing season for Warner; With both Championship teams, he would concede 19 goals in 13 games.

Dwight Yorke

SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2006-2007ME2Sunderland36/3824792819332688501240

Despite his excellent World Cup, the recall of the striker cum holding midfielder from his less than self imposed exile in Australia to English Championship football was to put it mildly, somewhat of a surprise. With Sunderland 4 spots from bottom 4 games into the season, 35 year old legs did not seem to be exactly what the doctor ordered. However Roy Keane stuck to his guns and enticed his former Red Devils teammate for one last go at the Premiership, the long way around…

Keane would use Yorke in spurts, alternating between him being a regular starter (mid October to mid November, January to February) and choosing his battles wisely. Despite playing his mifield general role, Dwight never forgot his true calling and still picked up 5 goals  for the Black Cats.
The outspoken Irishman has never ceased to underline the importance of Dwights off the field contribution as well as on the field utility and he is expected to play an important if not consequent role in the campaign to stay up in the Premiership next year.

Kevaughn Connell's stats are as above. After a promising start to the season, he seemed to lose form and/or fall out of favour with the Cannes coach. I got a nasty surprise today when I tried to call the club to schedule an interview (I had been putting it off for ages because of work commitments) and was told that he is no longer with the club. I haven't been able to obtain any further information than this  :'(

Excellent work Midknight, 10 out of 10.  :beermug:

I don't think we will see Dog in a T&T uniform again, since I think football is not as much a priority for him anymore as being a pastor is. Considering the low level he plays at now it is doubtful Wim would pick him for the future (if the blacklisting is resolved). But Dog has been a true, loyal soldier for T&T over the years and it would be nice to see him come get his 100th cap.

I real hope Sancho find a club before de season start. If "eat beat" Cox could hold down a captaincy and contract renewal at Gillingham at his mature age as a defender, who is Sancho. "Valiant" is indeed the best word to describe him, and I believe we can see better from Sancho, if only he has a secure place to do it.

Sam having to take a step down is real unfortunate. I was able to see a couple Walsall games last season and Sam was one of the best distributors of the ball in terms of vision and accuracy.

As for Birchall I hope he will get more games and more starts at Coventry. He is in a solid, decent Championship side. Same for Kenwyne - really unfortunate that he missed the playoff but Southampton is one of those teams that are expected to go up. If he doesn't get anything better I hope he stays there.

Sorry to hear about Kevaughn Connell. Sad news in truth...let we see what is in store for him.

I thought Dundee Utd was real dry to Sammy because he has for the most part been one of their best players. Anyway Toronto FC finally playing some nice football and winning games, so if he gets signed I looking for him to rip up the MLS.

As for Scotty I hope his work permit goes through to play in England, and continues to share spanner.

Latas remains de eternal T&T # 10 in my eyes, and I am definitetly one of those "certain ppl" who still cussing Beenhakker for not playing him more. Yes he did a remarkable job for us as a coach but dat doh blind me to de fact that he 4k up there. Dat is how I come to accept it.

As for our Sunderland trio, I am happy to see Dwight and Stern in the prem again (if Stern stays), and especially for Carlos who deserves it most of all and is a shining example of how hard work, perseverance and a sense of confident humility can take you far. An ability to share beat like hot pelau helps too.

T&T welcomes back...the King

I think K. Connell had some difficulties to adapt with the european football, especially in this Third french division, where power matters more than technique.
He has a lot of skills and a very good technique, but needs more time to really give his best.

The last i heard, he may try an another club in the South of France, as Nimes or Sète, but i'm not really sure. Anyway, i would 've appreciated seeing him another season with Cannes.

Kevaughn Connell is on trial at Vannes (3rd French Division) and he's making good impression after scoring in a friendly game.

Translation

" Following Vannes OC match against Botosani, thursday, the two goalscorers Fabrice Le Hénaff and Kavaugh Connel (sic) continued training with the vannes team , yesterday morning. Missing physical conditioning Tchami was not retained, Stéphane Le Mignan judging him inapt to play in a team like Vannes. However, the Vannes tactician seems to appreciate Fabrice Le Hénaff. « Connel isn't the type of player we are looking for, and for Hénaff, I am going to think about it », declared Stéphane Le Mignan at the end of the matcha gainst Botosani. A decision ought to be taken in a fex days. But apart from the intrinisic quality of the players, other criteria are to be taken into account, and in particular the finiancial interest.
