Daniel Sturridge and Phillipe Coutinho... a sublime partnership in the making.  Dem boys will be poison with a full pre-season of training together next season... if they can stay healthy.

Luis Suárez 'apologises' to Liverpool as he resumes squad training
(UK Guardian)

• Liverpool forward understood to have said sorry to team-mates
• Suárez had criticised club's stance over clause in contract

Luis Suárez returned from the cold at Liverpool on Friday when he trained with the senior squad for the first time since accusing the club and manager Brendan Rodgers of breaking promises over his future.

Rodgers ordered the Uruguay international to train away from the senior squad after his interview in the Guardian last Tuesday, when he stated his desire to join Arsenal and criticised Liverpool's stance over a £40m clause in his contract. The Liverpool manager insisted that situation would not change until Suárez apologised for his "total disrespect of the club" but it is understood the 26-year-old took that step with his team-mates on his return from Uruguay's friendly in Japan.

The Liverpool striker is also due to hold talks with Rodgers on Friday. While that relationship has been strained, and Suárez denied midweek reports in Uruguay that he had decided to remain at Anfield, he has been given little alternative but to accept his immediate future lies at Liverpool by the club's refusal to sell.

Liverpool have consistently stated their prized asset is not for sale and the principal owner John W Henry reinforced that position last week when he announced no offer from Arsenal, or a European club, would prise Suárez away so late in the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have agreed a deal with Valencia to sign Aly Cissokho on a season-long loan, with the French left-back due on Merseyside to complete the transfer next week. Rodgers has been looking to increase competition on José Enrique all summer with Liverpool having previously made offers for Lorenzo Melgarejo at Benfica and Guilherme Siqueira of Granada.

Liverpool playing all over Stoke in the first half... Sturridge finally with the break thru in the 37', but Liverpool arguably could be up 3-1 if not for some spectacular goalkeeping by Begovic.

Mignolet does not like dealing with Crouch. The old Stoke would keep making him deal with it, the new Stoke?

Unbelievable... and UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Walters could kick facking rocks for all that diving he does be doing.  Legit penalty in this case though.

Good win for Liverpool over a tricky Villa side.  I thought Villa actually played the better ball in the second half, but Liverpool did enough, particularly Mignolet, to foil them.  Coutinho is such a boss player, Inter must be kicking deyself for letting him get away.  If not, then they should be.  His dummy to set up Sturridge for the goal was what really opened up the defense to create the opportunity.  Sturridge made a difficult finish look easy.  Not good enough at Chelsea who begging for quality finishers right now.

Tactical analysis: how Liverpool have managed without Luis Suárez (UK Guardian)

The striker's main weakness is his insistence on going solo – and so far Liverpool have been more cohesive without him

While Luis Suárez remains Liverpool's most valuable footballer, there is an increasing suspicion the side is more cohesive without him. Since Brendan Rodgers took charge, Liverpool have played seven Premier League matches without the striker, collecting six victories and one draw.

Suárez's main weakness is his insistence on doing everything solo. Last season he attempted to dribble past opponents 95 times and had 187 shots at goal – in both respects, more regularly than any other player in the Premier League. It is frequently successful and often spectacular but sometimes frustrates team-mates.

The Uruguayan's single-minded approach was understandable in the first half of last season. Fabio Borini's injury problems meant Suárez was starting alongside Suso and Raheem Sterling, two untested youngsters, so he had a huge amount of responsibility.

The January signings of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge, however, provided Liverpool with two new attacking weapons that function perfectly together – the Brazilian's speciality is sliding pinpoint through balls between defenders, while Sturridge excels when playing high up against the opposition's backline, sprinting in behind.

The duo's first game together without Suárez – when he was starting his ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic – was the 6-0 victory at Newcastle. They combined perfectly for the second goal: with a casual pass using the outside of his right foot, Coutinho slipped the ball through the defence for Sturridge, who passed to Jordan Henderson to tap into an empty net. For the third goal, they combined almost identically, with Sturridge providing the finish himself, and in the midweek Capital One Cup win over Notts Country, Coutinho again assisted Sturridge.

The striker particularly likes working the inside-right channel, and given Nemanja Vidic's past struggles at Anfield, Rodgers will be hoping the combination of Coutinho's through balls and Sturridge's pace proves crucial yet again. This fixture could do without Suárez's antics for once – and so far this season, Liverpool aren't missing him either.

How this fella does stay on the field?

Decided to stick with the plan and go to church today and record the game instead... just got thru watching it.

I don't even understand why that wasn't even a card on Giggs.  Van Persie and Cleverly too, lucky not to get second yellows.

As for the defensive effort in the second half... it crystallizes the turn around from last season.  Thes were the games we were dropping points last season, either by giving away draws or conceding a late lead.  Still too nerve-wracking.  We not scoring enough, but if Suarez returns in the right frame of mind then more goals may follow.  Overall I love what I'm seeing from Sturridge and Coutinho.  Imagine Moses cutting in from the right wing feeding a floating Sturridge or Suarez.  The renaissance isn't complete, but it underway.

Defenders Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho to join Reds
(Ben Smith: BBC Sport)

Liverpool have agreed to sign central defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori for a combined fee of around £25m.
Sakho, 23, who can also play on the left and has 14 France caps, will cost £18m from Paris St-Germain with Ilori, 20, moving from Sporting Lisbon.

The duo, who have undergone medicals, are set to be at Anfield for Sunday's league match against Manchester United.
Liverpool are increasingly hopeful of adding Chelsea winger Victor Moses on a season-loan long as talks continue.

A deal to take keeper Shay Given on a one-year loan from Aston Villa as back-up to Simon Mignolet is, however, likely to go to the wire on deadline day.

Liverpool have prioritised defensive recruitments with Aly Cissokho joining Sebastian Coates on the sidelines.
Cissokho sustained an ankle injury in Tuesday's 4-2 extra-time Capital One Cup second-round victory over Notts County at Anfield, in which he was making his first start since joining on a season-long loan from Valencia.

"He could be four to six weeks, which is a blow because he came in and trained really well last week," said Rodgers.
"But he is on crutches at the moment and we'll look at that over the coming weeks. He certainly won't be available [against Manchester United]."

There was, however, better news on fellow defender Kolo Toure, 32, who was carried off on a stretcher with a groin problem against Notts County.

"Toure's injury is nowhere near as bad as we thought," added Rodgers. "We will assess that over the next 24 to 48 hours. We were all thinking he might be out for longer but he's made an excellent recovery.

"The diagnosis isn't anywhere near as bad as we thought, so we'll see how he is for this weekend. If it's not this weekend, then after the international break he won't be too far away."

Meanwhile, midfielder Joe Allen, 23, who also suffered a hamstring injury in midweek, will soon be back in action.
"It was only a grade one strain, so he may be doubtful for the weekend but certainly after the international break, he'll be fine," said Rodgers.

Victor Moses to sign from Chelsea on season-long loan
(Phil McNulty: BBC Sport Chief football writer)

Liverpool will complete the formalities of a season-long loan deal for Chelsea's Victor Moses before the transfer window closes.

The 23-year-old has slipped even further down the pecking order at the Blues after the summer signings of Willian and Andre Schurrle.

Liverpool will pay the Stamford Bridge club a loan fee, understood to be around £1m, as part of the deal for the former Crystal Palace and Wigan attacker.

West Bromwich Albion, Southampton and Everton had also shown an interest in Moses.

Moses, who was at Anfield watching Liverpool play Manchester United on Sunday, signed for Chelsea from Wigan for a fee reported to be around £9m in August 2012.

He made 23 Premier League appearances last season, scoring one goal, but has yet to feature for new manager Jose Mourinho this season.

The Nigerian international joined Wigan from Crystal Palace on a three-and-a-half-year deal in January 2010 for a reported fee of £2.5m.

Earlier this week Liverpool agreed to sign central defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori for a combined fee of around £25m.

Sakho, 23, will cost £18m from Paris St-Germain with Ilori, 20, moving from Sporting Lisbon.

Exactly why Rodgers sold him...was basically frustrated by Shelvey's inability to execute tactically and his inconsistency.

It's an entertaining game, both sides going for it.

If I was the coach, I taking Shelvey off now - before he set up a next Liverpool game.

Extremely disappointed with Liverpool in the end... couldn't defend the lead, something we seem to struggle with in each of the four games now.  Not only that, but seemed content in the dregs to settle for a point.  Hate coward football.

I wouldn't be too hard on Williams, the injury was kinda accidental, it was more the fall than the foul.  But agree with you, we miss Coutinho bad.  Aspas did nothing to inspire confidence that he could replace him... in fact if he ent look sharp he'll be starved for run now that Suarez poised to return and with Moses rounding into form.

Agger and Skrtel for Southampton?  Or should we not risk Agger and bring back Toure.  Hmmm, forget about Sakho, who seems to be a very good passer out of the back.  We spoiled for choices at the center back position, all of a sudden.

And we file away Llori for the 'future'.  Can't remember what injury Skrtel carrying, but I'd play Agger for at least a half, just so that he stays fit.
