Football / Re: Whitley back home from Portsmouth trial.
« on: January 25, 2006, 09:54:43 AM »
Going to Portsmouth on trial, you guys did not really think they would buy him?tell me no.....right?A largely unproven player but worth taking a look at,playing in a unproven league.....he could spit in the sky and ketch it in he ass they eh go sign him now,but they took a long look at him,all good.
Fighting relegation and money to spend why rush to sign Whitely? He should be happy to get a Premiership trial,I think in my heart he would be best at a Championship side that try to play football or believe it or not I think the Dutch 1st division.Guys, waiting until afer the world cup could only possibly improve his worth, which is a worth while risk,he will get a contract, highly probable, that is understood, where and the quality of contract is the questions.

Football / Re: Why is the standard of young goalies poor in Trinidad?
« on: January 20, 2006, 10:09:28 AM »
Touches soome excellent points, but the last one is kinda weak, why would T&T have smaller players than other countries right in the Caribbean come on now we actually have some massive lads at goalie,Jan Williams,Durance and also there is a line of very impressive goalies coming up at all age groups. There is still need for more structured coaching from younger ages.

Every Trinidadian has an Inate hate for American Soccer, considering they used us as the stepping stone to propel them to recent international success. But i must say how jealous and impressed i am that their young players are getting more and more opportunities at Big Clubs, while our youths fizzle into the lower leagues in England. America, at an exausting pace is growing as a football power, even though they do not have the backing by the main population. Can we learn anything from them, or is the answer simply the amount of money they pour into the sport?
Well those youths who fizzle out did not do to bad in reaching a world cup,and by the way this is more or less the first 10 years we have a constant flow of talent going to the British leagues,we have to start somewhere,we trinis too long eye and impatient

Men getting real chain up,Icland and Peru and men complaining, men head swelling fast and bad,if we get these two games it will be a good start then we could get a couple other stronger teams later on before the WC.I see some Football genuises saying we should start preparations with games against much stronger teams?Fellas dont get wax with allyuh emotions.

72
truetrini go in peace bredda, lawd fadda!

73
So if they are not good enough the clubs pay them salaries still even to just get cobo sweat because of their looks? We are too simplistic at times to say "dey ent good" sounds pretty daft to me.I remember in athletics when a US coach would never dream of giving an athlete ffrom the Caribbean a throwing scholarship, but now we see Jamaican,Trini ,Grenadian and Bahamian athletes on throwing schols not to big throwing programmes but smaller ones then bam after years Candice Scott leave Barataria and went to Florida Gators....big time throwing set up, why better training at youth levels and time eroding bias and mental blocks of these foreign coaches.
I remember when T&T defenders never got contracts,so according to you truetrini Brian Williams,Dexter Francis and Clayton Morris were not good enough, then Rougier went to Raith then Dog went on trial at Motherwell then ended up signing for Raith also now look at our back line?eventually one of our youth defenders will go directly to a bigger club as connections are made with local clubs.

74
People there is something else to consider,15 years a back a manager generally did not see Trinidad as a place to buy a player, just like 25 years ago Ghanaians were playing in the lower leagues of Germany,France etc much like our players in Britain now, look at African players on the whole today!they play for the big clubs but it took time,we like to walk before we creep! We will have a flow of players playing for bigger clubs but when we have more local players exposed to set say like Jabloteh and we have more local based getting capped things will change.Whitely and Jones anre to examples of signs of an improvement in player quality.

75
In Trinidad one can say that culture has brought about different emphasis,I have been told that  long ago going a football game was socially acceptable, now going zen,51 degrees etc is much more attractive.
With the football itself I have the opportunity to live with someone who watched football in the 40s and 50s and he said that the players now are on a next level he told me the once the best of Trinidad toured England and were beaten badly by 4th Division teams and generally showed that they were not ready,he told once West Ham came to Trinidad and hit the best we had 7 without much fuss!
Really we in Trinindad have a serious loser complex so we hold on to the so call better players of old among other pathetic jestures......like the following
I remember going to watch a President XI play Dundee and Dundee being run into the ground and on the heels of getting a 3-0 from Jabloteh and a man in the crowd start to bawl that dat eh the real Dundee how they letting the lil local ruff them up so!

If that talk about bp investing in Mayaro Spurs is true then it is long, long, long overdue and will capture a forgetten part of Trinidad in a footballing and social sense. ;)

Harry checks in at Pompey

Southampton have finally cleared the way for Harry Redknapp to return to Portsmouth by agreeing a compensation package with their arch rivals.

That was the major obstacle preventing Redknapp going back to the club he left in November 2004, but the 58-year-old has now been unveiled at a press conference.

Saints rejected an initial offer from Portsmouth to speak with Redknapp, with chairman Rupert Lowe calling a £125,000 package "derisory".

That compensation deal included £75,000 in the event of Portsmouth avoiding relegation and was rejected out of hand, leading Mandaric to claim Redknapp was out of the running for the job.

A new financial package has been agreed, paving the way for Redknapp to leave Southampton after 12 months at St Mary's.

He joined Southampton in controversial circumstances, just days after leaving their fiercest rivals, and is sure to cause more disquiet by heading in the opposite direction.

But Lowe is keen to draw a line under the episode, with Redknapp having set his heart on moving back to his old job.

"This saga had got to the stage of being an embarrassment for football as a whole," said Lowe. "Portsmouth have produced a compensation package that is just acceptable to this club and I consider that it is in Southampton's best interests to get on with the future rather than dwell on the past.

"I cannot comment on the quantum of the settlement as both clubs are bound by a confidentiality agreement."

Southampton have spoken with both the Premier League and Football League after losing Redknapp, with Lowe having not disguised his anger at the events.

"We do not believe that this episode has been conducted within the rules of the game and have made our understanding of the last week available to both the Premier League and the Football League," said Lowe.

Director Andrew Cowen underlined the disenchantment at Southampton.

He told the club's website: "Money continued to back Harry for the Pompey job on the betting exchanges.

"Perhaps in the future you should look at what happens there rather than what people say."

Redknapp took Southampton down to the Championship after failing to turn around their season, but they have not started the season in the manner of promotion contenders.

Nonetheless, Cowen believes the club will be able to attract a top-quality new manager to replace Redknapp.

"The Southampton post is very attractive," he said. "We have an excellent first-team squad and one of the best crops of young players in the country; we need to marry these with a top quality man.

"Despite drawing too many games in the season to date, with the way the Championship is bunched, promotion is still not out of the question."

They can now look forward, with Redknapp having walked out of the club on Saturday to leave himself and Southampton in limbo.

I think in its own right qualification is great, nice banter though :challenge:.I have to say an achievement  worthy of mention is the 1948 Olympic silver medal  and 1952 Helsinki Olympic Bronze in Weightlifting by Rodney Wilkes, still living on Betrand Street Sando.Having the chance to sit and talk with him back in 1998 and hear the conditions he trained under, the very nature of the sport(which was very class and colour oriented in T&T back then) ???,mental state of the colony  back then I have special respect for that man, he defied logic :applause:.
