Title: Collin Samuel Released from Toronto FC
Post by: lil damo on April 11, 2008, 02:28:36 PM
I am very disappointed to see him get released. I thought he had a lot of potential to contribute this year despite what people in Toronto claim. I’ve seen most of TFC games since they started and to be honest, no one on the team, except for Edu, Wynn and Brenen looked like class players, so I can’t understand why the fans target him only.

He hasn’t played great football to be honest, and certainly hasn’t stood out on a team that flat out sucks, but I think he has more potential to contribute than any of the other strikers on the team.

Any thoughts on where he might end up. Scotland maybe?

Toronto FC adds another
Globe and Mail Update

April 11, 2008 at 3:16 PM EDT

Toronto FC announced the signing of midfielder Rohan Ricketts on Friday.

The Englishman joins the MLS side after being freed from his contractual obligations at Barnsley of the English Championship.

"He's come in here and impressed the coaches, and by getting him we've instantly added more quality depth for our team," said manager Mo Johnston. "He possesses a great ability to get by players, and will be another exciting player for our fans to watch."

Ricketts, 25, has made stops at a number of big name English clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton before signing with Barnsley in July of 2007.

The midfielder started his career at Arsenal, winning the FA Youth Cup with the team in both 2000 and 2001. He also made one appearance with the Gunners in the League Cup against Manchester United. When Ricketts made the move from Arsenal to Tottenham in 2002, he became just the fourth player to make the switch to the cross-London rivals at White Hart Lane.

In a separate move Friday Toronto FC also announced that they have waived forward Collin Samuel due to personal matters.

"We are sad to see Sammy go," said Johnston. "Obviously everyone knows what he brought to the team. We wish him nothing but the best of luck in his future career, and we thank him for contributing to Toronto FC."

Samuel, 26, joined Toronto FC June 25, 2007 after playing out his contract with Scottish Premier League team Dundee United. He started all 19 games he played in, registering 1600 minutes, scoring three goals.

I am shocked and saddened by this. I went to Columbus to see the FC play and Sammy looked a much improved player over the last season. He looked fitter and faster. He did miss a crucial game tying penalty and the Toronto media crucified him for not following up on the rebound. But Mo Johnson is a savvy football man and I can't see him being swayed by media. Something else must be going on.

The TFC site says that Sammy was let go for personal matters. I believe his family is in Scotland, maybe something is going on there. I don't know. But right now I am scratching my head.

I guess TFC have no place for strong, quick and skillful players. Sammy didn't light up the league by any means but I think he will get interest from other MLS teams and definately teams in scotland

He can work anywhere in the UK right?
He has the off season to work hard and maybe train with some teams.  If he can convince a team he can be sold on if he performs well with them then he won't have to wait too long to get back into the mix?
I think to market himself he need to play with urgency and LOOK fit and be ready for a full 90 mins

Darryl Roberts is play with the kinda urgency that cud help samuel marketability.

Good luck with the summer plans....move quick.

It was obviously a salary cap move because they brought in Armando Guevara............. Former MLS MVP from Honduran team Montagua. .......Plus Colin really missed alot of goals last year. That didn't help either.. :rotfl:

I feeling bad for him but how long could he continue playing like that without any repercussions  ... i think he'll get alot of interest in scotland and I would look no further than falkirk where he made his name maybe he'll be able to rekindle the old magic there.

Well the games I watched there were moments of  flash that usually ended with little splash.
Potential speed and  toughness never fully  materialized into goals!!!!!!

The Toronto FC  I would look at now with less emotional  support until another Warriors join up with them.

Colin Samuel: the National team calleth....time for resurrection of your career.

Collin Samuel could play a whole lot better.  Dat penalty he take the other day was amateurish.  Dat miss was de final nail.  De Scottish commentator done say dat he could be a handful when he is on vs anyone but yuh never know which Collin Samuel going to show up.  Is not a skills problem.  He head not into it.

By MLS standards, Samuel was making big bucks, I believe in the range of $165,000 base salary.

He simply did not produce and was given more than ample opportunity.

TFC fans are literally rejoicing.........

Don't worry, you still have James  :)

I think a few of our players out there could come back in the Pro-league from a football perspective. But financially it is not always possible. Players must do what is best for themselves and their families even if that means kobo sweat in the English second division.

I call that one from the day they sign Robert. Whenever an MLS player sign a big name, we are the first on the chopping block. We need to stop looking at them as a viable option.

I agree but disagree ... he wasn't performing well and the effort was not there ...we could cut it anyway we want....he doesn't have the knack for that scotty has or stern but he has the pace to create problems but he doesn't use it. Men say the reason is because they playing him as a forward and not as a midfielder again more bullshit ....the various teams have used him in both positions including the national team trying to get the best out of him and what they get is a one off brilliant performance followed by 5 below par performances ...we can't make excuses for him....there is a problem and if he doesn't resolve it his career will be shortlived. I'm wondering if his understanding of the game is below par and it was masked by his turn of speed to compensate for his lack of Yorkability lol (this means a an incredible grasp and understanding of the game). I think if he can have get a jumpstart with a manager willing to give him a chance like Falkirk he may have a good chance ....that is the place where he flourished it's worth a look.

I think there's a lot more happening behind d scenes.... Media and PR ppl always help the slackness sound "proper"....
In terms of his capabilities, maybe TFC jus didn't have a coach that wanted to make these boys play proper footy.... When they were losing last yr, who was scoring? ANYONE? NO. So how did this become Sammy's problem? Well, I know they weren't doing any type of shooting drills while holding the record for goal-less games.... Mo was on his celly, and d boys were playing frickin keep-up games! STEUPSSSSSSSS!
How yuh gonna sign a man back in a higher position (Mo, as Dir. of Operations, instead of coach) when he can't even win a frickin game his first season? PLEASE TELL ME.......
TFC just lost a good player, with much potential for the MLS.... And let's see who really scores at all this season.... ???

Johnson said in de press dat Samuels WAS NOT RELEASED DUE TO HIS PLAY but rather due to personal issues he had to return urgently to Scotland to deal with.

Quote
Despite Samuel's slow start to the season, Johnston says his release had nothing to do with his play.

"I would have kept him. He's still a good player," said Johnston, adding that several Scottish teams will have offers for Samuel once he's ready to play again. "In Sammy's case, he had to go home ... the timing of events is fairly difficult."

Very BIG career move on your part Collin.

1.YOU and YOUR FAMILY come FIRST. f**k away with what anybody say or have to say
2.cause that shit excuse for a football field that yuh was training on 4days a week on would've eventually mash up yuh knees
3.if yuh waited till de summer transfer window to ride out yuh woulda end up stuck on de waiver list and picked up by de highest bidder or bouncing around de shit mls league for de duration of yuh contract(1 yr)
4.yuh free of de mls shackles, special set of laws and loopholes that ultimately work against every player in the league unless yuh name is david beckham, juan pablo angel, lauren robert etc
5.playing outta position in mo johnstion robot formation was slowly and surely killing yuh game
6.St.Johnstone waiting on yuh with open arms hurry up and reach back scotland and do it like how yuh did it at Falkirk

And when yuh ready to beat de pension system in Scotland come back to toronto cause with de trend of 31 and 32 yr old signings recently it seems like all it takes is a couple good seasons/performances in a bigger league and yuh could collect some good retirement money here.

Is not about mediorce players and this and that...America's League is to develop their players mostly...Is not about entertainment because is a setta hot eye match most of the time...they take old retired stars to spice up the league and dem fellas does look like they in a fete match...Beckham only fooling himself because is all for the money....All the players who go to America does never really develop anything substantial...Is not like their technique does improve...Up to this date with all the MLS and money behind football in America they cyah really produce a creative player...T&T culture is all about creativity and it should be reflected in the football...Is just a bunch of Rhino football...run run run ...all about athleticism....I mean they beat us but that is because we stupid coaches fail to learn the level of fitness we need to succeed at the next level...so at all levels we always behind in fitness...If we could mix athleticism with our creative nature I doh think USA could beat us...BUt cheers to the US though for playing to their strengths ...One thing I love about Americans is they know what they good at and could use it to their advantage..... :beermug: :beermug: :beermug:
