Cricket Anyone / ICC World Twenty20: June 8th matches
« on: June 08, 2009, 09:32:31 AM »
Rather than start a thread for each match today and since Windies aren't playing I'm amalgamating.

Ireland vs. Bangladesh is already done. Bangladesh lost the toss and were sent in to bat. They made 137/8 in their 20 overs. Ireland in reply scored 138/4 in 18.2 overs. Bulletin here. The result knocks Bangladesh out of the tournament.

Australia vs. Sri Lanka is next. Did anyone see the England vs. Pakistan match? I got the impression that Pakistan deliberately didn't try hard in that match. I hope Holland beats them to knock them out. They'd deserve it.

General Discussion / Getting tested
« on: June 03, 2009, 08:23:00 AM »
I was listening to a woman complain to a friend of mine about the difficulty she encountered in getting a blood test for a couple STD/STIs. According to her the labs won't take a walk in for any STD/STI test without a doctor's referral. One lab's reason for this is that the person will need a doctor to evaluate and interpret the results. I had some difficulty in accepting this so I checked out Doctor's Inn and Victoria Lab and both confirmed this policy. I was suprised since I figured with all these "empowerment"-based ads encouraging people to get tested that the local policy would be more accomodating.

So a person needs to spend money (usually between $120-$200) to visit a doctor simply to ask for a test, then pay for the test and then pay for another doctor's visit to "interpret" a positive-negative result. I've never been tested outside of T&T and since it was always during my yearly physical I didn't know about this policy. Is this standard worldwide? I can't imagine that it would be, but you never know.

Other Sports / UWI Games 2009
« on: May 23, 2009, 09:31:21 PM »
The UWI Games have started. St. Augustine is the host this year around. The opening was on Thursday at UWI SPEC and featured former UWI administrators who contributed in no small part to the games over the decades as well Chinee (Soca Star winner) and a couple UWI student-entertainers (I didn't know who they were).

St. Augustine lost to Cave Hill in men's basketball after the opening ceremony by the simple matter of 49-96. Then on Friday morning St. Augustine's men's hockey team defeated defending champions Mona 3-1 while the women lost to Cave Hill 0-2. Also on Friday St. Augustine's men's football team defeated Cave Hill 3-1. I left campus before the volleyball game between St. Augustine's women's team and Cave Hill. Our cricketers lost to Mona by 60 runs (40 overs per team). Tennis was also played on Friday, but I have no idea how that went. One of our table tennis players lost his match... again, not clear on the details.

Today I think Cave Hill played Mona in women's football plus netball has started. Not sure what other events are going on. Tomorrow is swimming. Not sure what else is there. Monday there's hockey, but none of the St. Augustine teams play. The women's football team gets under way as well. I'll try to update as much as I can.

Cricket Anyone / Windies vs. England - Test Match 2
« on: May 12, 2009, 12:09:36 PM »
Starting it early. Poor ticket sales leading up to the second match. Can't blame people for waiting to see how the match is panning out before going. Bell and Sidebottom have earned a recall to the squad for the second test with Panesar the guy getting the axe. Not sure what changes the Windies can make to get them to take catches. No way to beat this ordinary England team dropping 6 catches in a match. We can't even complain about their quality losing that last match in 3 days.

Cricket Anyone / Bravo on the go
« on: May 12, 2009, 11:59:45 AM »
He slow down a bit towards the end, but Bravo was on a tear for Mumbai with the bat against Punjab. He still finished with 70 not out from 59 balls as his team won by 8-wickets. The Punjab bowling line-up includes Brett Lee, Pathan and Sreesanth. Good stuff.

Cricket Anyone / Windies vs. England - Test Match 1
« on: May 06, 2009, 06:17:10 AM »
Preview

Windies won the toss and sent England in to bat. Lunchtime score is 88/1. Bopara and Cook not out on 33 and 34 respectively. Strauss went caught behind by Ramdin off Taylor. The 7 overs I saw before lunch saw the batsmen looking comfortable, but not scoring at a fast rate. Baker looked solid and was getting a bit of movement in the air and off the seam. Benn got one to turn a bit in the last over before lunch that found Bopara's edge, but was wide of slip.

Windies: Gayle, Smith, Sarwan, Simmons, Chanderpaul, Nash, Ramdin, Taylor, Benn, Edwards and Baker.

England: Strauss, Cook, Bopara, Pieterson, Collingwood, Prior, Bresnan, Broad, Anderson, Swann and Onions.

I didn't think they'd have picked Smith given his form (on this tour and in his career) coming into the match, but I guess there was a reason they selected him in the first place.

Getting a Grip

An excerpt from Monica Seles's book. I was never a fan of hers, but obviously she was on her way to being one of the greats in the game when that madman stabbed her. An interesting read.

Squad

Windies team to England: Chris Gayle (capt), Denesh Ramdin (wk), Lionel Baker, Sulieman Benn, David Bernard, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Fidel Edwards, Brendan Nash, Nelon Pascal, Dale Richards, Andrew Richardson, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor.

No Bravo? Anyone thinks it is because of his statements regarding the WICB? Did he make himself unavailable for IPL? No Roach? Is Pascal good enough? Is he ready after just 14 first class matches? We'll have to see I guess.

Cricket Anyone / Referral System
« on: February 28, 2009, 04:42:57 PM »
I was going to start a topic like this (if no one else had) after the series, but after today I figure it's a hot enough topic.

Listening to the match ref after the day's play I was not satisfied. I understand it now that the on the field umpire makes all the decisions. When a decision is referred the third (or tv) umpire reviews the different angles and gives advice - sometimes based on questions or concerns of the presiding umpire - on which the presiding umpire decides to uphold or overrule. That makes the Chanderpaul and Nash decisions even harder to take because if the whole "benefit of the doubt to the batsman" thing still applies then it begs the question as to what Harper is actually relaying to the middle. The Nash dismissal more than the Chanderpaul own because in Nash's case Dar actually REVERSED a not out decision.

The match ref said that Dar always felt it was good for height, but had questions about an inside edge and if Nash was hit in line. Rubbish! I can't see an umpire as good as Dar being without doubt about the height of that ball.

As I have always maintained the decisions need to be made by the on field umpire and left at that. No referrals. For more than 100 years players have accepted the umpire's decision, good and bad, as part of it and just got on with the game. Financial considerations are all well and good, but at the end of the day you get some your way and you get some against you. Be a man and deal with it.

Cricket Anyone / Regional First Class - 7th Round
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:44:50 PM »
Windward Islands vs. Jamaica (day 2) - Windwards made 261 in their first innings and in reply Jamaica are 264/3. Pagon (81) and Lambert (75 n.o.) are the main contributors for Jamaica. Marshall made 27.

CCC vs. Leward Islands (day 1) - Lewards made 275 in their first innings. Austin got figures of 5/75 from 35 overs.

Guyana vs. T&T (day 1) - We are batting first on 279/3. Simmons (he opened the batting) was dropped on 92, but finished the day on 148 not out. Ganga made 50 and Pollard is not out on 33. Guillen failed again making 4 (is he our only opening option?). Imran Khan made 33.

Cricket Anyone / Test match 2 - Windies vs. England
« on: February 12, 2009, 07:36:11 PM »
England are going to try to regroup and come out firing in this test. Many expect Shah to replace Bell at #3. There are some rumblings about Anderson replacing Harmison, but I don't think anyone expects that realistically. Otherwise the rest of the team should be the same.

The Windies will at the very least drop Marshall and I think bring in Simmons to open with Gayle. The decision that remains is if to leave Smith in - at #4 (where he might have played had Richards not been injured) - or drop him for Hinds. If Hinds comes in will he bat at 4 or will the line up shuffle down so that Chanders is at 4, Nash 5 and Hinds 6? It remains to be seen. No other changes are likely.

The pitch is apparently looking like a mud track and is expected to play slow, low and without pace. The outfield has raised some concerns with its sand based feel and risk of injury during sliding. The weather forecast is for rain over the next 2 days and cloudy the next 2.

Can the Windies play good cricket again? We'll have to wait and see.

Cricket Anyone / Test match 1 - Windies vs. England
« on: February 03, 2009, 01:47:27 PM »
Sabina park tomorrow from 11:00 am Eastern Caribbean time (10am in Jamaica). We will be seeing the referral system down here for the first time in a home series. Obviously we are the under dogs, but that hasn't stopped Dyson from sounding very confident in his team's ability to be competitive in the series.

Pieterson and Strauss are in good form coming into the match. Stuart Broad and Panesar are highly rated and Steve Harmison, if selected, has his career best figures (7-12) at the venue. Flintoff is expected to be fit for the match as well.

Windies might not have Richards available for the match so Devon Smith will probably open with Gayle now and Marshall gets yet another chance at #4. The obeah man wukkin good for he, dred. While I hope he does well I think he's on borrowed time and should he fail he'll be dropped for the rest of the series - maybe Simmons can expect a call up. Jaggers coming into the match in reasonable form and he may get a call up. I think for sure the Windies will take a spinner into the match so if it's not him it'll be Benn. So hard to tell what the selectors will do since it odten doesn't seem logical.

My probable team: Chris Gayle (capt), Devon Smith, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Xavier Marshall, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Brendan Nash, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Jerome Taylor, Daren Powell, Amit Jaggernauth (Benn?), Fidel Edwards

Cricket Anyone / England vs. Windies A - warm up match
« on: January 29, 2009, 02:41:40 PM »
Windies A have been putting the English to the sword on the first day of their warm-up match. Last score I saw was 244-1 after 64 overs. Barath on 112 n.o. and Simmons on 116 n.o. I'm still not getting excited about our chances in the series.

Cricket Anyone / T&T vs Windwards

Anyone know the score at the end of the 3rd day? I've been busy and was unable to follow it during the day. I know after 2 days we had a lead of 170 runs with Windwards finishing on 140/9. Bravo made a century as well. It's looking as if I have to pick it up on the news since nothing has been updated online as yet.

Cricket Anyone / 3rd Test Match
« on: June 12, 2008, 08:59:55 PM »
Ricky Ponting said to make Test Matches more interesting they should "re-introduce" fast bouncy wickets. The Kensington pitch is that and we have a pretty good game on our hands. Aussies sent in to bat are 226-7 in a rain affected match. Symonds again the beneficiary of an umpiring decision plus Marshall dropped him (both before Australia got to 140) and then he also dropped Lee. All in all I think the team should be satisfied with the day's work, early stop for rain aside. Bravo had 3 wickets, Taylor 2, Edwards and Benn 1 each. Symonds made good use of his reprieves to make 52.

Cricket Anyone / Aussie tour of the Windies
« on: May 19, 2008, 11:27:03 AM »
The first test match is a few days away at Sabina Park and yet this board is very quiet. The Aussies drew the 3-day tour match against a Jamaica XI in which Baugh scored a century. No other Jamaican batsman got beyond 31 in the match, but besides Parchment and Marshall I don't think any of them have been in the Windies team radar. Nikita Miller had bowling figures of 35 overs, 6 maidens, 75 runs for 2 wickets. Rain ended the match early and prevented the Aussies from a probably win. Katich and Mac Gill destroyed the Jamaican batting line up.

Just a few days away from the match I wonder how the team is progressing. The guys who were in the IPL are in 20/Twenty mode... will that make a difference come Thursday? Will a spinner be included in the final XI? Will we persist with the 3 specialists and Bravo bowling attack?

Windies Squad:
Sarwan, Bravo, Chanderpaul, Benn, Edwards, R. Hinds, Morton, Sammy, Powell, Taylor, Jaggers, Parchment, Ramdin and Devon Smith.

Harbhajan suspended temporarily

http://content-wi.cricinfo.com/ipl/content/current/story/347646.html

My favourite line from the article:
Quote
Engineer was the match referee of the game between the Kings XI Punjab and the Mumbai Indians, after the completion of which Harbhajan allegedly slapped Sreesanth, reducing him to tears on the field.

 Man ah badman, dred... I thought he was targeted harshly during the Aussie series, but perhaps I'll have to change that view.

Cricket Anyone / Carib Beer Cricket Challenge Final
« on: April 25, 2008, 03:59:34 PM »
Started yesterday at Sabina Park... I am suprised to see no mention of it here. Jamaica won the toss and sent us in to bat.

T&T 1st innings 121/9. Nikita Miller took 5 wickets, Dave Mohammed top scored with 30 not out and Ramdin was struck on the grill hooking a Powell bouncer and retired hurt. He's not been involved in the match since.

Jamaica 293 all out. Nash made 117 and Lambert made 50. Their overall lead was 172.

We batting right now at 43 without loss. Both openers, Ganga and Barath have been dropped.

The men defeated Cuba today 2-1 in the opening mens match of the 2007 Pan American Games. After going a goal down in the second half, skipper Kwan Browne (penalty corner) and Atiba Whittington (field goal) scored to help us to the win. The guys play hosts, Brazil on Wednesday. They lost their opening match to Argentina 19-0.
