Football / Re: Keane set for Edwards battle with T&T.
« on: March 08, 2008, 04:45:04 PM »
we cyah play most caring at this stage of our preparations..

Even if is to come back and get involved in the training drills and acquainted with Maturana's philosophies without playing the actual game Carlos must come back!!

We already miles behind as it is...

Look all them other countries, they do the same by calling up injured players to have their doctors examine the player and make a decision eg. Ivory Coast with Drogba, France with Makalele and Nigeria with several players..

If we serious about qualifying and preparations we need to be selfish and do what we can to have as much of our pros back for all international dates from now forward..

I wonder how Carlos feels about the callup though?

I might be wrong but my understanding of the rules is that since this is a friendly, the club is under no obligation to let the players go, I maybe wrong but the rule about injuries etc I thought applied to competitive games.

I can understand KJ being called but Carlos hasn't even played for the resrves yet, and to suggest he is realised for a week to meet up sit on the bench, well can I have some of what you are smoking please. ;)

This is probably a no win for the players because someone is going to be pissed whether it T&T or RK.

Kev the rules state that international players must be made available for international fixture dates, wheter it be a friendly or competitive fixture.. There's not much can be done by Keane and the Sunderland management outside of negotiation.

How do you think it works? You think its just a matter of the players turning up in the country for a World Cup qualifying fixture, boarding a taxi to the stadium, playing the game and heading back to jolly old Sunderland?? Just like your English national team, we also use "meaningless" friendlies for squad preparation..

Your sentiments show an ignorance for the importance of our international fixtures, but I understand you being a die hard Sunderland fan and all.

firstly your right its an international fixture date so the country has the call, my confusion arose due to I thought friendlys don't count, which is true if arranged on a one off basis.

I haven't got little regard for internationals I take them as it comes, but a "friendly" at this time of year given the clubs circumstances is absolutely crazy.  Kenwyn hasn't played well since the week before the last friendly.  Carlos has played 4 and a bit games all season and isn't yet fit.

You add that to the fact they miss the whole week and don't get back to late friday in our position the club just simply afford them away.  You can also say T & T show scant regard to the needs of the player and the club, booking economy standby flights is simply not on.  If the club has an obligation to release the players the country should have an obligation to return the players in a timely manner.  Now T & T can afford for the players to be treated like that but Sunderland  cant, so it will be Sunderland footing the bill for the flights.

Its debatable how critical it is for them to be at a friendly, but its vital they are in a proper state for the Saturaday.  As I said previously its not so much the game but which game comes after the friendly

Cup Cards do not apply to the League (as far as I know).

Im almost sure that they do. I think as long as its an English FA competition (EPL, FA Cup, Carling) suspensions apply.

Cards count for all games so he will miss 3 matches.

Ther's no way Barnsley deserved a goal. Chelsea have themselves to blame, 5-6 bad passes in a row. The pitch eh help either.

It's good to see that Barnsley had to put all eleven men in the box to defender against Chelsea...shows how much fear teams have of Chelsea.

I suppose its only fair as there are 4/5 players on more money a week than the Whole of the Barnsley team put together.  tell me again how many real saves did the Barnsley keeper have to make was it 1 or 2.

A good day for football in general, Manu were unlucky but it may stop the arrogance for a couple of games.

Bringing back Carlos for this game isn't necessary in the least, the guy hasn't played for the year so far and should just be trying to get back in to the Sunderland starting line up. The circumstances with K.J should be looked at carefully and the decide whether he must be at this Jamaica.

Just out of curiosity, if the game is Wednesday, is there no way they could get back to England on Thursday?? Doesn't seem so difficult to me??

Its the timing or more importantly the games schedule that is important.  TBH if the Aston Villa game was the Saturday after rather than before I can't see it making a difference as the points gained is likely to be the same with or without KJ and CE, but its the West Ham game that is on the Saturday after.

As mentioned above Carlos was supposed to be in contention for the reserves match midweek but was a no show, its just silly.

Getting back on the Thursday seems a little tight depending on the planes ( let alone a STANDBY TICKET  ;)), but missing training the whole week and god forbid an injury (which can happen in any game) is just crazy.

I understand its important with a new coach etc and if the circumstances were different it wouldn't be an issue but it could make the difference between survival and relegation.  This discussion maybe irrelevant anyway as the club may not see it as an issue.

Given when the friendly is, and I think the next month is make or break for Sunderland, its inbetween Aston Villa away ( a defeat) and West Ham home (winnable) I believe it would be insane to let them away for this one.

Everyone knows how tight it is at the bottom, if CE is fit and playing letting them both away for a week, travelling and geting back on Friday (T&T standby FFS)  before the match that could be the difference between survival and relegation seems crazy.

I will probably get hammered on here for it, but thats my view. If it was the end of April I don't think it would matter, but the timing of this one does.

KJ is not going thru any bad patch. He just no getting good service. Air ball, Air ball. Please!!!!

Upto about 4 games ago I would of agreed with you, but not now.

All players go through bad spells, but KJ needs to give his head a little shake and look like he is putting some graft in. ( i am not saying he isn't but it is not hard to look like he wants more by putting in a few more tackles)

He desperately needs a goal from somewhere to give him a lift.

How did KJ perform, I wonder...

Hes not been at the races the last 3 games, someone give him a call and tell him to either lay off his woman or the ganga.

BTW IF YOU THINK THIS SUNDERLAND TEAM IS SHITE

PS: please tell roy to rid the team of choppra and higginbottom, they are at best championship quality.

If we stay up there is a long list that needs a cull, most bought by RK, but I expect to see it happen.

If we are relegated I don't think there will be many changes as a lot are good championship players.

RK is a rookie manager and no doubt has learned a lot this season, lets hope it sticks, IMHO the coaching has left a little to be desired this year and also needs looking at in the summer.

Its a make or break month coming up with 4 hard games which will see where we play next season, the players and KJ need to get their arses in gear.

Keane is overreacting...you don't cut off your nose to spite your face.  Fine his ass, make him ride pine or whatever (provided that the current agreement with the players association allows for such fines).  Loaning him out seems unnecessarily harsh and reactionary...but then again if it wasn't then it wouldn't be Roy Keane, now would it.  Lol

Good post Kev

Problem is he has already been fined a few times(obviously not worked), RK hates lateness players being what he views as "unprofessional" and "disrespectful".  He is also one of the seniors in the squad.  RK is very consistent on this, he left 3 players out of the team last year, who were all regulars because they were late for the bus.

He has also said its up to the player to get himself off the transfer list if he wants to.  I would say 99% of fans agree with RK on this one, just another instance of players thinking they can do anything they want without any consequences.

Miller's agent hits back at Keane

Liam Miller's agent has leapt to the defence of a player transfer-listed by Roy Keane this week for his poor time-keeping.
Sunderland said they would listen to offers for the Republic of Ireland midfielder after his exasperated manager lost patience with his frequent lateness.

But the player's agent, Eamon McLoughlin, feels the 27-year-old has been harshly dealt with and Miller's explanations have been reasonable.

"Wednesday's decision by the club is very disappointing," McLoughlin said.

"We accept that Liam was late three times in the past week but on two of those occasions the situation was out of his control. One of these was a well-publicised accident on the A19. ???

"The implication is that Liam is indisciplined and not fully committed to his job at Sunderland and while I do not want to start a public row with the manager, I can't let that pass. Liam is not unprofessional and I think people who know him know that.

"In 18 months at the club Liam has been late seven times in total, but most are by a matter of minutes. The worst case was half an hour last season."

McLoughlin says Miller would like to stay on Wearside.

He said: "Liam is not casual in his approach to his profession and for the sake of his career we need people to know that, at Sunderland and elsewhere. We have to accept the manager's decision but Liam's disappointed, not least because it damages his reputation in the
eyes of fans at Sunderland and beyond.

"If the punishment fitted the crime Liam could accept this more easily, but Liam doesn't think it does. He'd still love to play for Sunderland but that is obviously not his decision to make."

Keane pulled no punches yesterday when he revealed why the player had been transfer-listed but one of the things he made make clear was that it was business, not personal.

He said: "It has nothing to do with Liam as a player or as a lad.

"In any walk of life you have to be on time for training.

"If he is late once or twice, three or four times maybe well and good, but when it is five, six or seven times then you have to draw the line.
"We had incidents last year, where players were late for the bus, and you move on.

"But if you are driving to work, don't get in the car with Liam Miller because he has more car crashes than anyone I know." :rotfl:

Well theres the reason

http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/Ruthless-Keane-explains-Miller-axe.3825182.jp
Ruthless Keane explains Miller axe

Liam Miller has been transfer-listed for his poor time-keeping, Sunderland boss Roy Keane confirmed today.
The 27-year-old midfielder had been repeatedly warned that he had to be in for training on time and yesterday the manager drew a line in the sand when he said that one of his most talented players could leave the club.

Keane (right) explained: "We made our position clear with Liam. It's one thing that I've spoken to players about on many occasions and Liam in particular – and that's to do with time keeping.

"It's got nothing to do with talent but I've said if you want to be a top footballer you need a lot more than talent.

"And you certainly have to be in on time for training.

"Liam has been late on a regular basis and I've got to be fair to everyone at the club – to his team-mates, to the staff and to our supporters.

"If a player can't be on time, then they don't have a future at the club."

Although the Republic of Ireland midfielder is available to go out on emergency loan to lower league clubs, Keane has refused to shut the door on a player who he watched last night in the reserves game and who he regarded as possibly the best player on view.

But it is obvious that Miller now has a long way to come back from.

Keane said: "Players at this club will always get a chance and while they are a part of this club they will always be considered. If Liam wants to catch himself on, that's up to him.

"But I have to look at the bigger picture and that's the overall welfare of Sunderland Football Club. I s
et high standards but that's what this club needs."

While Miller, who scored a last-minute winner against Derby County last season, is unlikely to come into contention for this weekend's game against the Rams, former Derby centre-half Danny Higginbottom could well play a part.

Higginbottom played over an hour for the reserves on his comeback from a broken toe injury and Keane said: "Danny could come into it.

Obviously we have Danny Collins suspended because of five bookings and Danny Higginbottom has played left back before.

"We've got him and there's also Ian Harte to consider in that position but we'll see nearer the time."

Kieran Richardson was not involved in the reserves last night but he has been in full training and might also come into contention for the game.

Dwight Yorke is not suspended as previously reported. He has accumulated four bookings and not five.

I think they need to relax on Carlos and let him just get better altogether. That's if they really care.

Don't really understand this.

He broke his leg 3 months ago, in a nothing challenge by a Derby player the agent was very quick to tell everybody he was only going to be out for 4 weeks.  He took a knock in training a few weeks into his comeback which was more serious than the club let on.

Gien he has been out for 3 months and it must of mended to be even considered for a reserve team outing, why would you have a fit player and not play him.  If he gets another knock and something happens then possibly Carlos has another type of problem, if you are not going to play him just in case whats the point of him being a footballer.

Given the nature of the injury it should be more than sufficient time for it ti heal.

By Nick Alexander

Danny Higginbotham will get a run-out in Sunderland's reserve team tonight as he comes back from a broken toe.

Higginbotham, a centre-back, has not played in the Premier League since the 1-0 defeat at Blackburn in early January.

Anthony Stokes and Liam Miller will also feature but there is no place for Kieran Richardson or Carlos Edwards.

Roy Keane is hoping to have Richardson available for Saturday's trip to bottom club Derby but has decided against risking the midfielder at Leyland tonight (7pm).

Richardson has not featured in the first team since February 2 because of a hamstring strain.

Edwards is also close to a return after breaking his leg three months ago. He will now target next week's reserve game against Wigan.

Bolton's squad is set to include Stelios, Ricardo Vaz Te and Nicky Hunt.

Sunderland (from): Carson, Wright, Higginbotham, M'voto, Harte, Donoghue, Pelter, Weir, J. Richardson, Miller, Dennehy, Chandler, Stokes.

Visit safc.com after 9pm tonight for a report on Bolton Reserves v Sunderland Reserves.

Football / Sunderland's Miller Transfer Listed
« on: February 27, 2008, 07:37:32 AM »

Bit of a shock as he has been one of the better players.

Something must of went off either he has said something or done something, as most will know there would be a few others on the list before him if it was for football reason.  It maybe he doesn't want to sign a new contract and only has a year or so left, but the timing is odd if that was the reason.

http://www.safc.com/news/?page_id=14288

Sunderland AFC have announced that Liam Miller has been put on the club's transfer list.

The Irish midfielder has been told he can look for a new club.

Transfer regulations mean the player is only available for an 'emergency' loan move to a Football League club during this season.

A permanent transfer is not permitted until after the season, in May when the transfer window reopens.

Miller joins Ross Wallace, David Connolly, Ian Harte, Stephen Wright, Graham Kavanagh (currently on loan to Sheffield Wednesday), Greg Halford (currently on loan to Charlton) and Stanislav Varga (currently on loan to Burnley) on the Sunderland transfer list.

What exactly are these guys going to learn in a week that they can take back to their countries?

1 week

7 days

Triallists go for longer periods.

On the surface, this thing seems kinda iffy.

Den again....ah guess is better dan nutting.

Dont think there is anything iffy about it, I would imagine Sunderland / digicell are paying the fares putting them up etc.  They are after all bairns I would imagine it was setup this way for the clubs and the lads benefit.  It must be easier for them to show what they have with a group of them rather than being by themselves for a "trial", they are less likely to be overawed feel homesick etc.

Sunderland benefit because of the above and get to look at several rather than 1 or 2 at a time.  I don't know whats going to happen, are the club going to invite them back for a longer spell if they impress or indeed offer them a training contract.  It would only take 1 player to come through to make it worthwhile to the club.

I would imagine seeing a different professional setup and training methods will help them and meeting / talking to RK can't be that bad either.

I hope something comes out of this for both the lads and the club.

Can someone please tell me a little bit about them, passing ability pace skill level etc.

Kev..I totally understand that, especially from a Sunderland POV.  If even ONE player gets asked to stay and that ONE player somehow goes on to either 1) Play a single game for the Sunderland 1st team, or 2) Get an offer from another team (which is where Sunderland could derive a profit from the cost of bringing all eight) then is a win /win for Sunderland and the players.

What I'm wondering about is the agenda for these players.  What exactly are they going to do while at Sunderland?

Ah mean....yes, I'm sure the professional environment will be different for many of these players.  There will be a different level of intensity, preparation etc.  But there will also be THE WEATHER.  This is February/Early march in England.  I sorry....but 1 week to acclimatise in dem kinda alien conditions for the majority if not all these players is precious little time.  Unless they doin all dey trainin indoors.

Basically, when Jack Warner say take full use of the opportunity and come back and come back and teach it to their home countries as role models, what exactly he talkin about given that is just 1 week they have?

For a Leston Paul, is this Sunderland 1 week experience any more beneficial or eye opening than say going to and participating in the U 17 World Cup?

Its the end of March 23rd I think, its not so bad for the North, but that wind off the North Sea will feel like its Siberia to the lads.

No one knows whats going through the clubs mind, but I can hazard a guess.  The lads are all young with potential and lets face it will cost cost a lot to buy or contracts by UK standards (although probably a lot of money by tha lads standards, Sunderland are a fair club I must stress)

All have good potential, I think most have played at International standard.  As pointed out Barnes is playing the scouting role, I would imagine it is not any different from the normal scouting role as in UK and Europe.  Scouts report other people go to see them and some sort of decision is made.  I know Sunderland have a policy of trying to buy youth, just bought a very big young lad from France who is just in the reserves but regarded as having potential, noone knows whether that will be fulfilled or not.

I would hazard a guess that it is difficult, time consuming and expensive to follow the same formulae for your part of the world, and the club are largely basing the outlook on JB word.  The week will allow the club to take a look at the skill level, pace etc, but more importantly get a feel for the lads, likelyhood of settling and most important of all attitude.  Not something they probably normally can do with routine signings.  If they cannot handle the conditions in March lets face it they are very unlikely to handle the conditions in December/january.

From the lads perspective I am sure all would love a contract, but being there a week at that time of year maybe an eyeopener for them and some may decide its not for them.  Lets face it gicing they are only bairns its not going to be that easy to up sticks and move half way around the world.

As I have said I can only guess but Sunderland will be looking for players, not profit thats the only thing I am sure of

So they ent get One pick self.

After all d skill and how they were the most impressive etc.

steuppssssss

RF right here. what do you mean by this boss? "So they ent get One pick self."

Lets give the youth men a round of applause. Good exposure for all of them. the real surprise for me is St. Kitts getting two picks. Its obvious that their program is heading in the right direction. Barnes was obligate to pick at least one Jamaicand and One Trini...to appease both burrell and Warner I suppose.  I hope the camp will be held in the suumertime and not in the cold of winter or even spring. I dont think the kids can handle the winter climate :)

Its the end of March so its not too bad by North East Standards, but it will probably still feel like Siberia to the lads, should be a full house for the West Ham game on their visit.

In relative terms it would cost the club nothing to give a few of them 2/3 year contracts or so on sort of standard UK "young players wages"( not the silly wages bandied about), because if just 1 makes it it will probably pay for itself by saving the transfer fee alone for ONE decent player.

All he is saying is what most English fans suspect, that the ages on Nigerian Players passports could differ from their actual age.  If you take a look at some of the nigerian players they must of had extremely hard or worrying childhoods because they tend to look older than the passport age Yakubu, Martins at Newcastle and a few others.

It was basically a joke remark, nothing more nothing less.

There's not a lot wrong with what HR said " KJ could be the next DD"

DD didn't have a great 1st season in the prem and looked more out of sorts than KJ has, but has better control, finishing, composure and awareness than KJ.  He is also surrounded by players that can pass when he moves and he is fairly sure that it will reach him.

Sunderland would of been sunk without trace without KJ this season, but strangely its how poor the rest have been and playing to KJ strengths back to goal getting hoof balls that has help him look so good.  KJ is still a kid as a CF and has a lot to learn, he needs to improve all the things above and and produce more weeks than not, especially now as he is a marked man.  Would he have looked so good at clubs like Arsenal etc with so many other good players around him, I don't think he would of.  The fact is none of them were interested in him.

KJ has the potential to be great it is up to him and Sunderland has to play its part by providing him with team mates that can help him learn  improve and provide him with better service.  I have read many posts going on about "big" clubs which really means money.  The club is in the same position as KJ, 2 years ago when being relegated stone cold bottom and the take over coming 40 odd thousand turned up on the last game against Arsenal to show the new owners.  Chelsea took 2,000 fans to Everton for a cup semi final, sunderland have had 11,000 applications for an away trip to Derby.

KJ has the potential to be treated like a god in the North East its upto him to make it, or become another 1 season wonder who the likes of HR and everybody else that is praising him now will turn around and say "I told you he was never worth that money".

I hope sunlun stays in the prem, i've grown to love this team , not BC of our boys, but the heart you've shown in the last two campaigns, from the CCC to the EPL. i think roy keane is a gutsy manager who's just been extremly unlucky this outing with injuries. i hope carlos gets well enough to play when he's totally ready, he still has half a season to prove he belongs there. Only 12 Games left, its a real scramble at the bottom, it wont need that many points to survive this season 3 wins a a couple of draws should be enough unless all of them start winning.  It would be a nice change to get the full team out for the last 10 or so games Carlos KR and AR in mf should see them create a lot more chances and KJ score a few more goals.  Not had the luckiest season this year on injuries, the players have done well considering the team we have had to field for most of the season.  Squeaky bum time.

Hrmmm...I wonder who source is the correct one.

Guys,

Officials from Haiti said that they receive calls from Digicel stating that 5 players from Haiti were picking to go to Sunderland. Yeah, 5 from Haiti (Guesmly, Fabien Vorbe, Wedner St cyr, Elusma and Renaud Brisly) that is incredible performance for Haiti. if it is true, that will show the level of real talent Haiti has compared to other caribbean teams.

I can not wait for Barnes to name officially the 5 Haitian players.

I heard 2 Haiti, 4 Trini, 1 from Jamaica and 1 from Suriname was picked.

Adams, Daneil, Gay and Paul was picked from T&T.

Barnes requested the amount to raise to 8 instead of six players.

And Now Check this....

Remember Maturana new squad picked last week...

Maturana mixes his picks

Maturana mixes his picks for next warm-up international.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago Senior Team head coach Francisco Maturana has selected his squad of home-based players to prepare for an upcoming friendly international at home to El Salvador scheduled for March 19.
Maturana, after viewing the majority home-based players over three matches and several training sessions, has kept some faces in the mix and has invited three players who represented this country at the FIFA Under 17 World Championship last year – defenders Daneil Cyrus and Akeem Adams and midfielder Leston Paul. Current National Under 20 striker Jamaal Gay has also been called up.

Hrmmmm....Very Interesting.

Is it coincidental that the Digicel picks are now part of the Senior Team training?

Give them Caps and let them fly out yes.

I wonder who picked the 4 players first, Barnes or Maturana...or Jack?

Say what Go TT. I ent vex atall

Silly question but aren't some of the islands able to get eu passports because of ex colony, like FRance Spain etc.  Don't want to upset anyone just asking the question, I seem to remember something along those lines for some reason.

Are the names right are the numbers right we'll soon know.

fella just being a typical agent. hype your players..especially those at risk of being forgotten.
Exactly. Right now, if Sunderland try to sell him or if Sunderland get relegated, most likely ain't a single Premiership team gonna come looking for him. He off the map.

He was off the premiership teams map when Sunderland bought him.  Chris Kamara keeps going on how he kept recommending him to premiership clubs but there was no takers, don't know why but thats the case.  Theres a suggestion he will back for the Derby game so lets keep our fingers cross.  If Sunderland survive its an area of midfield RK is going to have to strengthen / back up next season.  Lets not forget Carlos has around 10 games to prove he can cut it in the premiership.

Only Ronaldo is better then Sunderland winger

CHRISTIANO Ronaldo is the only winger better than Sunderland's Carlos Edwards, it was claimed today.
And that shows how big a blow it has been for the Black Cats to be without the Trinidad & Tobago international for all but five games this season.

Edwards has not played since breaking his leg in a 1-0 home win over Derby on December 1 – one of only five appearances in an injury-ravaged campaign.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane sent the former Luton and Wrexham flanker for treatment in an oxygen chamber in a bid to accelerate progress.

His agent Mike Berry says the 29-year-old's recovery is going well, but refused to put a date on Edwards's comeback.

"Carlos is desperate to get back, but he has to be fully recovered if Sunderland are to get the best out of him," said Berry.

"It's not for me to say when he might play again; that's a matter for Roy Keane.

"But Carlos is feeling very positive, and that's good new for Sunderland because, in my opinion, he's the best wide player in the Premier League other than Ronaldo."

A hamstring injury hindered Edwards at the start of
the season – keeping him out of action three months.

He broke his leg only three games into his comeback, but Berry says the winger is drawing on past experiences as he looks to get back onto the pitch.

"Carlos is a military man," said the agent. "He signed up for the army back home and that made him a strong character.

"He's worked damn hard in the last 10 years to achieve his ambition of playing in the Premier League and having got there it's been a season of disappointment.

"A lesser person might not have handled it as well as he has and I'm sure that once he gets back into full training, which is hopefully imminent, we'll see the best of Carlos in the best league."

Keane said last week that Edwards, Kieran Richardson (hamstring) and Danny Higginbotham (broken toe) were all making progress, but he did not expect them to be ready for this weekend's trip to Portsmouth.

Well there you go, not bad for a lad that has not has a chance to settle in the prem, or indeed prove he is up to it (I don't have any doubts)

But same guy was very quick to say 4 weeks out with a broken leg when it first happened, he may have been told not to comment on "club" matters now.  I think Carlos could do with telling him to keep his mouth shut.

This is the same guy who was at the recent clinics.

It doesn't look like to be back next weekend, I would hope he makes the Derby game.

I think the reported training knock a couple of weeks ago must have been more serious than the club let on.  He needs a change of luck.

no Richardson or Miller either for Portsmouth so any points is just looking like a bonus

Carlos and Kieran unlikely for Pompey

By Nick Alexander

Roy Keane does not expect Carlos Edwards or Kieran Richardson to be available for Sunderland's game at Portsmouth next weekend.

Edwards and Richardson, who have hardly featured this season because of injury, may not be ready until next month.

Edwards was in London last week, for some sessions in an oxygen chamber, as he tries to come back from a broken leg.

Keane, the manager, said: "I wouldn't have thought we'll have any of the injured players back for Portsmouth - unless Kieran trains really well next week, but as I've said before, we have to be careful with him."

Liam Miller (calf), Roy O'Donovan (abdomen) and Danny Higginbotham (toe) are also in the treatment room. Higginbotham, who has not played since early January after breaking his toe, is set to return to training next week.

Dwight Yorke will be available for the trip to Fratton Park after playing in the reserves on Tuesday and Andy Reid and Grant Leadbitter, both recently back from injury, will push for a place in Keane's side.

The boss added: "The lads coming back from injury - Grant, Reidy and Danny Higginbotham next week - will do extra training. But in terms of the lads who have played every week, it's just keeping them simmering nicely."

Sunderland are without a game this weekend as the attention switches to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

"I'd probably say that it's a decent time for us to have this break," said Keane. "We'd love to be still in the FA Cup, but we're not and it does give us a chance to recharge out batteries.

"It's short, sharp training sessions at this stage. There are 12 games to go and their fitness levels should not be a problem.

"It's important that you get the balance right because we've had injuries. We had an eleven-v-eleven game on the training pitch yesterday which was quite hard.

"The games in this league can take a lot out of you, both physically and mentally, especially for a lot of our players who are new to the Premier League, they have put a lot in.

"They will have the weekend off and than it is back to normal on Monday."

Sunderland face two successive away games after the break - they go to Derby after playing Portsmouth. "We're gearing towards the Portsmouth game and trying to get that first away win," said Keane.
