Canada & Mexico open CONCACAF Women’s U-20 with victories.[/color]
Canada and the host Mexico opened the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Final Round with victories over Trinidad & Tobago and Panama, respectively, in Group A at the Estadio Luis Pirata Fuentes in Veracruz on Wednesday.
COMPLETE STANDINGSTwo goals by Reanner Sleiman and one each from Lisa Collison, Aysha Jamani, Kaylen Kyle, Veronique Maranada and Jodi-Ann Robinson led Canada (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 7:1 victory over Trinidad & Tobago (0-1-0, 0 Points).
Aveann Douglas had the only goal for the soca princesses via penalty kick, while the maple leafs extend their perfect record in CONCACAF Women’s Youth Qualification games to 6-0-0 record.
In the other Group A encounter on Wednesday, Verónica Charlyn Corral scored four times, Christine Yvette Nieva had two, while Rebecca Mendez, Tania Paola Morales, Monica Ocampo and Isabel Valdez all had a goal for Mexico (1-0-0, 3 Points) in the 10:0 win against Panama (0-1-0, 0 Points).
The 2006 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Final Round continues on Thursday as Group B begins at the Estadio Rafael Murillo Vidal in Córdoba as El Salvador meets Surinam at 12:00, and then USA takes on Jamaica at 14:30.
At the conclusion of the first round on 23 January, the winners and runners-up of each group will earn a place in the event’s semifinals at Veracruz’s Estadio Luis Pirata Fuentes on 25 January, with the winners of the semifinal games earning a place as CONCACAF representatives in FIFA’s U-20 Women’s World Championship.
CONCACAF’s third spot in the FIFA event will be determined by a third-place play-off game between the two losing semifinalists at the Estadio Luis Pirata Fuentes on 27 January, before the two finalists meet for the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 crown later in the day.
