Jamaal Shabazz, coach of the T&T women’s football team, has chosen 13 overseas based players in a squad of 20 for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Final Round Qualification.
The two groups of three teams will compete at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella from September 6 to 10. T&T will compete in Group A with Dominican Republic and Suriname, while Bermuda, Haiti and Jamaica are in Group B. The group winners will progress to the 2006 Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup, joining Canada, Mexico, Panama and host USA in November.
The Women’s Gold Cup, which will crown the Concacaf champion, will also see two countries qualifying for next year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup in China. The third-place team from Concacaf will meet an Asian team in a home-and-away playoff for the final spot at the Fifa World Cup.
With only seven of his players based in T&T after eight left on scholarship last week, coach Shabazz has decided to end his current training programme and resume on Friday. Among the regular players called up by Shabazz are defenders Katrina Meyer, Anastacia Prescott, the midfield trio of Niasha Reyes, Nadia James and Dernelle Mascall and strikers Tasha St Louis and Ahkeela Mollon.
