Trinidad and Tobago’s National U-23 footballers will depart for Suriname on Tuesday to contest the opening Caribbean Football Union group phase of Olympic qualification for the 2008 games in Beijing.
Coach Jan Van Deinsen, who returned to help the team prepare earlier this month, after assisting in arrangements with the T&T U-17s in Papendal, Holland, finalized the squad with Michael Mc Comie.
The team includes several players based in the T&T Pro League including some who have represented T&T at the senior international level. Those players include Caledonia AIA midfielder Hayden Tinto, United Petrotrin’s Keon Daniel and North East Stars striker Kendall Jagdeonsingh. Also in the mix is former National U-20 captain Radanfah Abu Bakr and former national Under 17 midfielder Devon Leacock.
Twenty-two Caribbean nations have been placed in six groups for the first round qualification. Aruba, Bahamas, Cuba, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Vincent & The Grenadines and Suriname will each host a Caribbean First Round Group that will run from August 31 to September 13.
The six group winners will advance to the CFU second round that consists of two three-team groups scheduled to play in October 2007. The top finishers in each triangular group will progress to the 2008 CONCACAF U-23 Final Round Tournament.
T&T faces Guyana from 7pm on Friday at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium. They then take on Netherlands Antilles in the second game on September 2 at 4:30pm and Suriname two days later at 7pm at the same venue.
