Ironmen ink three-time league champion Shawn Boney
njironmen.comOctober 30, 2008The New Jersey Ironmen officially announced today that they have come to terms with veteran forward Shawn Boney. The three-time indoor champion will join the second-year club when they open preseason camp on December 1st.
“Boney is a big target with an extremely soft touch for a big man,” Ironmen Head Coach Omid Namazi stated. “His size brings an intimidation factor, and not only can he find people to pass the ball, but his own shot is lethal.”
Born in Tacarigua, Trinidad, Boney stands 6-foot-7 and is listed at 265 pounds. He is a winner of three indoor championships, one while playing for the Cleveland Crunch (1998-99) and twice as a member of the Philadelphia KiXX (2001-02, 2006-07). His championship resume is something that is of much significance to Namazi, who was the head coach in Philadelphia when Boney and the KiXX took the 2001-02 league crown.
“When putting together our team this season, we were very conscious of championship experience,” Namazi continued. “Boney has played in pressure situations, and he is a proven winner.”
Boney, a Southern Connecticut State alumnus, was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the second round of the 1997 Major League Soccer College Draft. He made his indoor debut later that year with the Force and was named to the All-Rookie Team. He remained in Cleveland for three seasons including the championship run in his second year. After starting the 2000-01 season with the Detroit Rockers, Boney was acquired by Philadelphia via a trade. He then patrolled the turf for the KiXX for seven seasons and helped bring the City of Brotherly Love a pair of league titles.
Boney joined the expansion Orlando Sharks last year and made an immediate impact to the first-year side upon his arrival, recording nine goals and seven assists. In 246 career regular season games, he has notched 125 goals to go with 92 assists and 111 blocks.
The New Jersey Ironmen will make their 2008-09 season debut at Prudential Center on Sunday, December 14th, opening up their sophomore campaign at 4:00 p.m. against the Chicago Storm.
