D.C. United at San Juan Jabloteh
« Reply #19 on: September 15, 2009, 04:27:39 AM »
D.C. United at San Juan Jabloteh
By Steven Goff (Washington Post)

What: CONCACAF Champions League.
Where: Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
When: 8 p.m. TV: Fox Soccer Channel.
Radio: WZAA (1050 AM); Spanish WACA (1540 AM).

Group Standings: Marathon (Honduras) 2-0-0, 6 points; Toluca (Mexico), 2-0-0, 6; Jabloteh 0-2-0, 0; United 0-2-0, 0. Two teams will advance to the quarterfinals.

Outlook: United is 0-7-3 in this competition the past two years, and a loss to Jabloteh would essentially result in elimination at the halfway point of the round-robin schedule. With a tie, the club would probably need victories in the final three matches. Rookie GK Milos Kocic, who has started two MLS matches and five nonleague games, is expected to be in the lineup and be backed up by teenager Bill Hamid, who was signed from the club's youth program two weeks ago. This game concludes a stretch of 10 games in three competitions over 31 days for United, which is 2-5-2 during that period. Only 16 players made this trip. Among the scratches were Santino Quaranta (quadriceps strain), Fred (calf), Bryan Namoff (dizziness) and David Habarugira (yellow-card suspension). Also left behind to rest were Ben Olsen, Jaime Moreno and Josh Wicks. Trinidad and Tobago natives Avery John and Julius James are probable starters. Jabloteh, which relies almost exclusively on domestic players, has won four of the past seven T&T league championships.

United defenders get chance to go back home

United defenders get chance to go back home
By John Haydon (The Washington Times)

D.C. United's trip to play San Juan Jabloteh in Trinidad and Tobago is not only a chance to earn its first win in the CONCACAF Champions League, it's also a homecoming for two of United's defenders.

"My mouth is watering right now thinking about the food," said Julius James, who along with teammate Avery John was born on the Caribbean island that sits off the coast of Venezuela.

United, which was greeted by James' parents at the airport in Trinidad on Sunday, will attempt to get its first group-play win in the event on its ninth attempt. United went 0-5-1 last year in the Champions League and is 0-2 in group play this year.

"Going back home, everybody knows about D.C. United," John said. "It's not like a no-name club, so I'm really looking forward to it."

John, a 34-year-old former American University standout, has received 65 caps with the Trinidad and Tobago national team - nicknamed the Soca Warriors - since 1996. He helped the team qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time in 2006, when John received the first red card of the tournament in a match against Sweden.

James, 25, has received just three caps with the Soca Warriors since 2008. The defender expects a tough match Tuesday.

"It's going to be really competitive because we are going into Trinidad," James said. "We just have go in there and get the job done and be disciplined. You'll definitely see a good game."

After losses to Honduran club C.D. Marathon and Mexican side Toluca, United sits at the bottom of Group B with zero points below the winless Jabloteh, which has conceded fewer goals.

On paper, Jabloteh appears to be the weakest team in the group, and United will be looking for all three points on its first trip to Trinidad.

While United remains focused on winning an MLS playoff spot, coach Tom Soehn said he has not given up hope of advancing in the Champions League, an event that involves the top clubs from North and Central America and the Caribbean.

A win over Jabloteh and a victory over Marathon at RFK Stadium on Sept. 24 could revive United's chances. The club does not have another MLS match until San Jose visits RFK on Sept. 27.

"We are still positioned well," Soehn said.

Six of United's regular players did not travel with the team. Santino Quaranta (quadriceps) and Fred (calf) are injured, while Bryan Namoff, Jaime Moreno, Ben Olsen and Josh Wicks are all being rested. Eighteen-year-old goalie Bill Hamid, who was recently signed to the senior squad from the youth academy, traveled with the club.

Jabloteh is Trinidad's most successful team, having won four TT Pro League titles. The club plays at the 27,000-seat Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.

"It's a young team," John said. "At the end of the day, it's a home game for them, so we have to respect them because they made it this far in the competition, so it's not going to be an easy game."

Added James: "As with any Caribbean team, they have a lot of skillful players, athleticism and speed."

The Washington Post article sounding typically over-confident; Jabloteh looks weak on paper, they looking fuh 3 pts, DC Utd resting players. That kind ah talk usually means there is decent chance that a good result should be on the cards if Jabloteh play well.

Ah hope the Royal Castle went down well.

DC takes new hope to Caribbean.
By: Charles Boehm (MLSnet.com).

Mix of youngsters, veterans try to reignite United CONCACAF chances

WASHINGTON -- D.C. United continue their international juggling act this week with a CONCACAF Champions League Group B match in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where they will try to re-ignite their campaign with a positive result against San Juan Jabloteh on Tuesday night.

With their MLS playoff prospects still very uncertain in the wake of Saturday's 2-1 loss to Seattle, United have journeyed to the Caribbean island nation with a squad comprised mainly of youngsters and reserves, plus a sprinkling of experience from the likes of Clyde Simms, Christian Gomez and Luciano Emilio.

First-choice goalkeeper Josh Wicks and veterans like Ben Olsen, Bryan Namoff and Jaime Moreno have remained in D.C. for rest and recovery. But those selected for Tom Soehn's traveling party have plenty to prove and the team remains optimistic of securing a valuable victory at Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Recent arrivals Tiyi Shipalane and Lawson Vaughn might make their United debuts -- and though it's less likely, so could 18-year-old Bill Hamid. The promising netminder became the first-ever D.C. youth academy product to sign with the senior team last week and will be Milos Kocic's backup on Tuesday.

"From day one we've always had a deep roster and the coach shuffles it around," said midfielder Andrew Jacobson on Sunday. "Maybe some of the guys who don't play as much are going to be playing in the game, but every game we really do look to go out and win it. I don't think we write ourselves out of this at all - we win this game and we're right back in the tournament."

The two clubs sit side by side at the bottom of the group, both having lost their opening matches to Mexican representatives Toluca and CD Marathon of Honduras. That reality raises the stakes for Tuesday -- both sides harbor hopes of a belated revival in the competition, but failure to pick up the full three points would deal a major blow to any such ambitions. United believe Jabloteh, a perennial contender in Trinidad's emergent domestic league, will press the issue from the outset.

"They are going to be up for it. They believe that they still have a chance," said D.C. defender Avery John. "We still have a chance, obviously. So we just have to be careful. We have to stick to the game plan, make sure we absorb a lot of pressure, try to play a lot of possession and get at them."

The match represents a homecoming for John and his fellow defender Julius James, both of whom have represented Trinidad and Tobago at the international level and will be eager to prove themselves on familiar turf. John grew up in Point Fortin, an oil-producing area southwest of Port-of-Spain, and he expects Jabloteh to exhibit the aggression and athleticism that typifies Caribbean soccer.

"When you go down to Trinidad, expect a flat-out attacking sort of soccer," said United's left back on Saturday. "[Jabloteh] have some good movement. Especially at home, they tend to be a little more free-flowing ... it's going to be a hard game."

Both this season and last, United has struggled to adapt to the distinct demands of Champions League, where Latin American-infused tactics and style tend to present a jarring contrast to the muscular norm of Major League Soccer. In that sense, Jabloteh might offer a more familiar matchup for Soehn's team and the current squad's growing international experience should simplify matters as well.

"You have to be able to accept changes and different tactics, and different teams and styles of play," said John. "We went to El Salvador, we played in Honduras -- a couple different types of play and I think the guys, especially the reserve guys, everybody has a better idea of what to expect."

Perched precariously in the final spot for the MLS Cup Playoffs with several teams capable of vaulting them in league action (D.C. have a bye weekend ahead), the Black-and-Red might be forgiven if the postseason picture dominated their thoughts. But the team is working their way through the challenge one step at a time.

"You've just got to take it game by game, whether it's the Champions League or the MLS race for the playoffs," said rookie Chris Pontius. "You can't look ahead too much and you've got to focus on the opponent at hand."
