Joe Public opens Super League against Westside Super Starz.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Guardian).

Last season’s treble-winning club bmobile Joe Public, will open its account in the 2012 blink/bmobile National Super League (NSL) season, on Sunday, when it takes on Westside Super Starz, in the second match of a double header at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, from 6 pm.

The late fixture will follow a clash between Club Sando and 1976 FC Phoenix, which will kick-off at 4 pm, together with the rest of the opening day NSL matches. The four clubs are among the 12 which will participate in the 2012 Super League Campaign, an increase of last year’s ten teams.

Stokely Vale, Eagles United, Real Maracas, WASA and Defence Force are the other teams which are returning for the 2012 season, while ambitious community-based teams, Siparia Spurs, Biche United and 1st FC Santa Rosa will join the league for the first time after sealing promotion through the Champions of Champions competition. St Francois Nationals, last year’s last place finisher has been relegated.

The Match Day One exchange between Joe Public and Westside will feature a keen match-up of both finalists in last season’s inaugural Christmas Cup, a match which finished 4-1 in favour of the Macoya-based Joe Public team.

Ellis Dyett scored a hat-trick in that encounter. Super Starz, meanwhile, is led by long-time St Anthony’s College headman Nigel Grosvenor. Grosvenor will challenge the 2012 campaign with a team which finished third from bottom last year in the NSL.

He, however, has a rich history with the Secondary School which is noted for producing talent. Most recently and significantly, “Grovey” guided the “Tigers” to the Secondary Schools Football League North Zone and national InterCol titles in 2011, after going 19 straight matches without dropping a point.

Grosvenor will be up against Dale Saunder’s Joe Public team, which the latter took to treble winning glory. Saunders, a former Joe Public and national midfielder landed the league, knockout and the inaugural Christmas Cup titles in his first season in charge of the club.

Speaking ahead of the challenge in the upcoming campaign, Saunders spoke of the added incentives by the league for competition, and expressed hope that his team would be able to mirror the title winning performances of 2011.

“We’re hoping that we can reclaim our titles, and we will surely do our best,” said Saunders. He added: “One thing I know about Joe Pubic is that we have a great structure in place, we have a great organisation in place, and we are one of the best clubs in the Caribbean.”

After the opening day clash with Westside, Joe Public will have two more tricky tests in succession when it takes on Defence Force and WASA FC on the next two Sundays. In the other matches on Sunday, Eagles United will take on Stokely Vale at the Edinburgh Recreation Ground, while Real Maracas challenges FC Santa Rosa at the Maracas Recreation Ground, St Joseph.

At the Palo Seco Veledrome, Siparia Spurs will play Defence Force and in the other match Biche United will host WASA FC in its first NSL match at the Bitch Recreation Ground.

Stokely Vale take Super League KO.
T&T Express Reports.

Tobago's Stokely Vale went a step better than the previous year, when the won the Super League knockout title on Sunday with a comfortable 3-0 win over defending champions Joe Public at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Tobago.

For a second straight year, the final was played in the sister isle. However, this time, Stokley Vale avenged their 2-1 defeat to the Eastern Lions from Trinidad. After a goalless first half, the home team took control when they scored twice within six minutes.

Dominic McDougal scored in the 34th to give Stokely Vale the lead before Antonio Balfour doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 40th minute. The score remained the same until the 88th, when Keron Phillips scored a third goal to spark celebrations for the Tobago team.

...Now Super League suffering also.
T&T Express Reports.

The Blink/bmobile National Super have not escaped the apparent dispute between the Ministry of Sport and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF), which has seen the local football governing body being denied Government funding in the last six months.

"For the first time in 11 years the Super League has not received a cent from the Ministry of Sport and they have not replied to a letter from the Super League," stated Super League organiser Anthony Harford, who is also chairman of the TTFF'S financial arm.

Harford said that when his All Sport Promotions company took over running the semi-professional league 11 years ago, it was firmly established that at least one Tobago team be included, so as to spread the football throughout the country.

Harford said Government would usually provide the cost of travel for teams going to play the Tobago teams and vice-verse. Two Tobago teams, Stokely Vale and 1976 FC Phoenix play in the Super League.

"Everyone knows the cost of going to Tobago. There is no question of impropriety involving the travel. You know how many persons are traveling and the cost," Harford declared.

"But this year they have not given us anything and have not even replied when we tried to contact them."

Harford said the lack of this important component of sponsorship has placed tremendous pressure on All-Sport.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Joe Public not happy with NSL knockout venue.

Joe Public not happy with NSL knockout venue.

Joe Public are not happy with the choice of the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet as the venue for last Sunday’s Blink/Bmobile National Super League Knockout final.

The 2011 winners lost to Stokely Vale (3-0) with items from Dominic McDougal (34th minute), Antonio Balfour (40th) and Kerron Phillips (88th) respectively.

According to the club’s general manager Joseph Sam Phillip, “this is the third consecutive year the Blink/Bmobile Knockout Competition was held in Tobago with us playing the same team twice in the last two years.

Phillips, in a letter to All Sports Promotions said that: "neither our supporters nor our sponsors were able to attend the final game on these three occasions.

“It was noted that one of the officials came out of retirement to work at the game and clearly there was an unbalance in the officials while in our discussion we were promised there would be a balance in the officials which did not happen.”

“The final was originally carded for the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima.”

Phillips further stated; “if the venue was changed based on a financial point of view, then this must be stated in the fixture prior to the opening of the League or before the Knockout Competition, added Phillips.”

Meanwhile, All Sport Promotions, the organising team of the National Super League, has been slammed by 2011 Super League champions Joe Public FC over comments made by Anthony Harford, All Sport’s managing director, in a recent news article.

The Joe Public’s general manager Joseph Sam Phillip, in a letter addressed to Sports Minister Anil Roberts on Thursday, noted, “Joe Public has played in the Super League since it's inception of the League and is the most successful team in the history of the Super League competition.

“It saddens me to read of the unjust claims by the management of the Super League, notably Harford,” Phillip added. “Joe Public does not support the allegations made by the League management of the lack of sponsorship and collaboration between the Government and the League.”

Bmobile (TSTT cellular division), sponsors the Super League as its title sponsor,” he explained. “This is rumoured to be $250,000 per annum.” With TSTT under majority ownership by the T&T Government, “therefore Bmobile sponsorship of the League ought to count as Government sponsorship.”

In a recent Trinidad and Tobago Newsday article which reported thatl; Phillip also pointed out that the Super League’s prize money has always been paid by the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT) which “is always Government sponsorship.” He mentioned, “it is very interesting to note that each of the ten teams of (the) League pays a registration of $45,000 and SPORTT pays All Sports Promotions approximately $354,600 per annum.

“This amounts to gross income of approximately $804,600 for Super League management and/or All Sports Promotions,” Phillip continued. “What are the costs associated with this League?

“Unlike the Pro League, the Super League administration does not provide each club with in the League a breakdown of income and expenditure for any calendar year despite us paying registration fees on an annual basis and being a key stakeholder of the League, along with the other clubs.”

Phillip stated, “I think that the Government needs to closely observe the funding of this League and not fund a League that has not been accountable to its stakeholders (clubs, sponsors and others).”

He continued, “it is also informative to note that, if one time wins all the titles in the League (as we did last year), they would get $220,000 in prize money. Therefore, the balance of approximately $584,600 is used in what aspect? I hope it is not for administrative costs associated with All Sport Promotions and their numerous initiatives.

“In closing, based on the current business model of All Sports Promotions and the current management of the League, I am not surprised that All Sports could afford to loan (the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation) $600,000 as claimed in (the news article),” Phillip ended.

I have no doubt that the JP football team can hold their own with any team on a given day. As a matter fact that goes for all serious football teams. But the JP officials can't complain now. There have been quarter, semi and finals were played at JP grounds in the past. Home team advantage was skewd in their favour.  When the finals were held in Trini, nobody complain. Why not have some in Tobago. Now referee is a different issue. I honestly feel the refs should be neutral. Maybe that is what JP might be complaining about. But that should not be a barrier for more important games to be played in Tobago.

Westside climbs top after Real Maracas thriller.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Troy Thompson scored an equaliser and the winner with a minute left, to take Westside Superstarz back to the top of the blink/bmobile National Super League, after the team triumphed 4–3 over Real Maracas, in a rescheduled thriller of a match, on Wednesday.

After Real Maracas held a 3–2 lead with the clock winding down, Thompson, who already bagged an early equaliser, came up big again as he scored twice in two minutes (89th and 90th) to lift Westside from third place, below WASA and bmobile Joe Public, respectively, to the top of the pack on goal-difference.

The thriller was staged at Westside’s turf at St Anthony’s College Ground, Westmoorings. Real Maracas enjoyed a better start, and within three minutes in the St Joseph-based team was up 1–0 through a Dillon Bartholomew strike. Just two minutes later, however, the early effort was cancelled out by Westside’s Akeil Gilbert.

Kester Mejias followed up with a goal in the 13th to give Maracas its second lead, which was again scratched by Thompson’s first item in the 21st minute. With the match tied at 2–2, going into the second half, it was Maracas again, which scored to find an incredible third lead, when Bartholomew completed a double in the 51st minute.

Heading down to the wire, the second-to-last placed Real Maracas seemed to be heading for a famous win, but for the determination which Westside has demonstrated throughout the season. Thompson popped up with the two all-important goals, which sealed another big win for the Nigel Grosvenor-coached team en route to dethrone reigning champions Joe Public.

The result saw Westside take a lead on the 12-team standings on goal-difference ahead of WASA. The two top teams, on 31 points, hold a one-point advantage over Joe Public, while fourth-placed Stokely Vale trails by eight points.

Westside will travel to the Plymouth Recreation Ground, on Sunday to face Stokely Vale, from 4 pm. WASA and Joe Public will also play their weekend matches on the road, when they travel to FC Santa Rosa and Eagles, respectively.
