Trinidad advances in qualifier

Leonson Lewis scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half, leading Trinidad and Tobago past El Salvador 2-0 Sunday in a qualifying match for soccer's 1990 World Cup.

Trinidad, 1-1-2, moved into third place in the North and Central American and Caribbean region with four points, one behind the United States, 2-1-1. Costa Rica, which has finished play in the double round-robin finals, is 5-2-1 with 11 points. The top two nations in the five-team group advance to the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Also Sunday, Brazil beat Venezuela 4-0 at Rio de Janiero as South American qualifying began. Brazil, a three-time World Cup champion, took the lead in South. America group three, which also includes Chile.

Lewis scored his first goal on a corner kick from the left side that sailed over El Salvador goalkeeper Carlos Rivera. The second goal also came off a restart, a Hutson Charles corner kick from the right side. Lewis out-jumped El Salvador's defenders and his header beat Rivera, who came off his line attempting to grab the ball.

Oscar Ulloa had the best chances for El Salvador, 0-3. He was saved in the 57th and 88th minutes by Trinidad goalkeeper Michael Maurice.

El Salvador plays Trinidad again on Aug. 13. The game, originally scheduled for San Salvador, will be played in Los Angeles. El Salvador has been banned from hosting matches by FIFA, soccer's world governing body, following a fan disturbance at a game against Costa Rica on June 25.
