New $5.2m indoor facility launched

New $5.2m indoor facility launched.
By Shaun Fuentes.

CONCACAF president Jack Warner revealed plans to construct a new artificial playing field at the Marvin Lee Stadium as he opened the new Futsal Indoor Playing facility at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya, yesterday morning.
Warner said the new turf at the Stadium would be the second phase of the FIFA Goal Project for Trinidad and Tobago, to follow the Futsal facility which came as phase one after previous plans to construct a training centre for national teams had to be abandoned following Government's failure to grant land for the originally proposed centre.
Warner asked guests to take their minds back seven years when the venue was a mere warehouse that had been transformed with swimming pool, playing field, state-of-the-art indoor facility and now the Futsal court which has seating for 900 fans. It will also be able to facilitate other sports such as volleyball, basketball, netball and hockey in addition to five-a-side football.
"It shows the tremendous strides that have been made right at this venue over the years," said Warner who took the place of FIFA President Sepp Blatter who was unable to attend the opening of the facility which Warner said cost $5.2 million and was fully constructed in three months by C&H Associated Limited.
Warner said that FIFA had given $2.5 million towards the facility with a little more than $2.5 million coming from CONCACAF.
"There is no other facility in the Caribbean like this. But this is not the end of FIFA but the beginning rather, because in a few months' time, FIFA and CONCACAF will dig up the Marvin Lee Stadium surface and put the first artificial turf in the Caribbean.
"Before the end of the year we shall have an artificial turf which of is the highest level and one which is used in Champions' League football and can be played 24 hours a day." TTFF President Oliver Camps also expressed deep appreciation towards the efforts of FIFA and CONCACAF in helping the Federation through the first phase of the Goal Project which had been stagnant in this country while other countries had been benefiting from the exercise.
"It is with great pleasure that we accept the facility that has been afforded to us by FIFA and CONCACAF," he said.
"These facilities will go a long way in contributing to our development and we will definitely look forward to making the best use of what is before us today." Derek Hamilton, the registered engineer for the facility, explained that the facility which has full lighting and is air-conditioned, also comprises of a playing and training court along with dressing rooms for two teams, match officials and media. He also spoke about the automatic operating retractable seating for the fans.
"It is extremely important to note the retractable seating accommodation because it allows use of the entire area when fans are not here to be seated, which occupies 160 feet in longitude by 40 feet transversely. The tech gym surface is also the accepted one by FIFA for indoor football," Hamilton told TTFF Media.
To mark the opening of the facility, an exhibition match between the T&T national Futsal team and a President's Selection made up of national players was played, with the latter coming away 4-3 winners. Francis Pascall and Derrick Balthazar netted a double each for the winners with Anthony Small (2) and Ako James scoring for the T&T side.

T&T Team:
1-Kevin Graham, 5-Colin Joseph, 10-Cordell Greenidge, 9-Marvin Lee, 11-Anthony Small, 6-Franklyn Ollivierra, 7-Zane O'Brian, 8-Lorne Joseph, 3- Ako James.

Presidents X1:
1-Andre Fournillier, 12-Ryan Dipsingh, 7-Ricardo Benette, 11-Anthony Peters, 6-Jeremy McPhie, 8-Francis Pascall, 9-Allan Hemlee, 3-David Samuel, 5-Bernard McCall, 4-Derrick Balthazar, 10-Anthony Thompson.

Some of de professional indoor players in de US supposedly interested in coming back to play too. Right now we have Shawn Boney in Phiily, Wendell Regis and Joel Bailey in Baltimore, and Addae Rique in St. Louis. Dey would add some good experience to de skill we already have on de team.

If it is 'true futsal' it is supposed to be on a hardcourt not astro turf..that is one of the things that separates it from 'indoor'..'dead' ball (no bounce), hard court and no walls...nice game ..only for the skilled

Ronaldinho owes a debt to futsal
« Reply #12 on: May 09, 2007, 08:27:35 AM »

European futsal will rightly take centre stage this Saturday as the continent's eight best nations learn their fate in the draw for the 2007 UEFA European Futsal Championship – but the Brazilian influence can never be ignored.

Porto party
Porto is the venue for this year's finals, to be played from 16-25 November, and hosts Portugal will be challenged by holders Spain, Russia, Italy, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Serbia and newcomers Romania. While the sport is growing across Europe – a record 36 nations entered this edition and 12 countries will take part in the 2009 finals – the traditional heartland of the sport lies in South America.

Trademark tricks
uefa.com took time out during the past UEFA Champions League season to speak to some of football's most famous names about what futsal means to them. FC Barcelona inspiration Ronaldinho was clear about the benefits of the small-sided game. Although its influence is obviously apparent in his trademark tricks like the elastica, whereby the player quickly shifts the ball from side to side, and pedalada, when circling the ball with his feet while moving forward – he prefers to emphasise futsal's impact on his close control and passing ability.

Futsal debt
"It's helped me a lot because in futsal it's all short passes and on a football pitch it's totally different - you have more time to think," Ronaldinho said. "When I was little we always played futsal and now it's easy to control the ball in short spaces. The way I control the ball, that's where it's helped me a lot." It is not just forwards who owe a debt to futsal, AC Milan defender Cafu said his early experiences stood him in good stead. "I played for two years when I was young. All the kids in Brazil play futsal, it's a great game. It's good for dribbles in short spaces on the football pitch."

Lasting legacy
Elano Blumer, the FC Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker, had a similar upbringing – and was also left with a lasting legacy. "I played futsal until I was eleven and then changed to football," he said. "It is very good for a player, you learn to dribble in small spaces and to think very quickly." While most of the world's top stars all had to dedicate themselves to football at a young age, they still cannot resist going back to the game where it all began. Rodrigo Taddei, the AS Roma midfielder, was immersed in the sport from the age of four until he was 16. "My career began in futsal as a right-winger," he explained. "I still play some kickabouts when in Brazil on holiday."

Problems with the pool facilities at the Flying Fish Swim Club have forced the cancellation of this year's Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) Primary Schools Swimming Championships.

The competition, which was scheduled to splash off today from 9 a.m. at the Federation Park facility, has been called off because the pool is said to have a leak.

The governing body for the sport locally advised that the postponement will be in effect until further notice.

T&T men leave for Concacaf qualifiers
BY NIGEL SIMON (Guardian)

T&T coach Clayton Morris selected eight members of the national team that won the inaugural Caribbean Futsal (five-a-side football) title here four years ago on a 12-member team over the weekend.

The contingent leaves today on a 7am flight to Guyana for the Concacaf Caribbean Futsal Qualifying Tournament which takes place from Wednesday.

The five day six-team tournament runs until Saturday and matches will be played at the National Sports Hall, Georgetown, Guyana.

The teams will be divided into two groups of three teams each: Group A—Haiti, Saint Maarten, and host Guyana while Puerto Rico, Suriname and T&T comprise Group B.

The winners of each group will advance to the tournament final and in the process will both secure places to the Concacaf Tournament.

The two second placed teams in each group will play for third spot.

Following Friday’s three hour practice session at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Sport and Physical Educational Centre, St Augustine, Morris who also coached the T&T team to the inaugural Caribbean crown selected his final squad of 12 players from 22 in training.

The players who were part of the 2004 team and selected for Guyana Include captain Kevin Graham, vice-captain Sterling O’Brien, Cordell Greenidge, Anthony Small, Jerwyn ‘Bally’ Balthazar, Marvin “Tiny” Lee, Wendell Douglas and Colin Joseph.

The other members of the team are goalkeeper Jason ‘Zenga’ Bowen, a reserve on the 2004 team, Javon Skeete, Dale Simon and Clint Ramond while Ricardo Bennett and Ronald ‘Sharky’ St Louis are the two reserves.

Following the selection of the team Morris said that although the team did not get the kind of preparation he wanted they are are still expected to do well.

“I’m counting on the experience of the guys who were in the team before and know what it takes to bring success and the eagerness of the newcomers to push us to do well.”

“The guys are no strangers to this time of football because they play in these kinds of competitions all year round and its just for us to go out there, work as a unit and put away our chances.”

Morris also praised the efforts of Wayne Riley of the Sport Company of T&T (SporTT) who provided some much needed equipment for the players.”

The national coach, former captain of the ‘Strike Squad” team also noted that while he has chosen 12 players for Guyana, the other 10 players will rejoin the team when they return, providing the team advances in the competition.

T&T Futsal squad: Jason Bowen, Javon Skeete (Beacon Powder Magazine); Marvin Lee (OTSL); Clint Ramond (Soogrim Trace); Cordell Greenidge, Anthony Small, Dale Simom (Santos); Kevin Graham,Jerwyn Balthazar (Perfect Love); Wendell Douglas, Colin Joseph (Laventille Youths); Sterling O’Brien (Defence Force).

Technical staff: Clayton Morris (coach), Hutson Charles (assistant coach), Alex Procope (manager), David Cumberbatch (physiotherapist/trainer), Winston Payne (equipment manager).

CFU Futsal is initiated with high scoring matches.
By: CFU.ORG

Trinidad and Tobago made a winning start to its defence of the Caribbean Futsal Championship with a convincing 7-0 win over Puerto Rico in the second game of a double header at the Canedo Hall, Centre of Excellence on Thursday.

In the first match of the evening, Guyana routed and understrength Sint Maarten by 8 goals to 2. The first half was highly competitive with Guyana scoring late in the 7th minute, when Sint Maarten equalized in the early in the 14th minute, Guyana struck back almost immediately, through John Waldron, to take back the lead before going into half-time. Early in the 2nd half the Dutchmen scored to equalize the game at 2 however the remainder of the game was controlled by the Guyanese who scored 5 more goals and were assisted by an own goal from Sint Maarten number 12 Perry Geerlings.

Later on in the 2nd match of the night's doubleheader, Trinidad and Tobago defeated Puerto Rico by seven goals to nil in a fast paced match. Even with the elevated score against them, the Puerto Rican's never gave up the fight and battled to the end, but the Trinbagonians prevailed. Trinidad and Tobago defended its Caribbean Football Union Futsal crown in style on Sunday with a hard earned 6-3 victory over Haiti in the Final of the 2008 championship at the Canedo Hall, Centre of Excellence.

With both teams already through to the CONCACAF Final round, the battle was simply for Caribbean supremacy and the indoor Soca Warriors didn’t disappoint the large band of fans that turned up to witness the pulsating action.

For the first time in the high scoring series, the game’s opening goal didn’t come inside the opening 5 minutes as both teams played it safe in the earlies with the Haitians trying to long range route to goal but to little avail. T&T settled and looked more threatening on goal before eventually breaking the deadlock in the ninth minute through Brent Antoine.

Jerwyn Balthazar then doubled the advantage in the 14th minute but Haiti hit back in the 16th minute through Chaperon James. Looking to tie it up before the half, Haiti saw the lead increased by T&T when Colin Joseph made it 3-1 in the final minute before the interval.

T&T kept up the pressure after the break and it wasn’t too long before they seemed sure winners of the championship.  Kevin Peters made it 4-1 in the 24th and Sterlin O’Brien pushed it to five a couple minutes later. Joseph then gave the home fans even more to make noise about with a second item in the 33rd minute.

Haiti did manage to pull two goals back but the game was already wrapped up by then. T&T coach Clayton Morris recognized the effort by his team, crediting them for sticking to the game plans over the series.

“All credit must be given to them because in today’s game we knew this would be the toughest game because we saw how the Haitians were playing and they were a high scoring team. But we played our game and we executed well. That was always going to be important and the players stuck to the game plan which paid off. I am really happy for the bunch of players and now our efforts will be geared towards preparing for the CONCACAF Finals,” Morris said.

In the earlier third place encounter, Suriname were 7-3 winners over Guyana. Haiti captain Edouard Voltaire and  Eliacin Rigarden ended tied as the tournament's top goal scorers with  seven a piece.

Futsal, a five-a-side indoor form of football, has been gaining popularity in the region and TT and Haiti now both qualify for the CONCACAF Final Round series in Guatemala. They join Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, USA and the hosts Guatemala at the Championship in Guatemala City from June 2-8.
