Today was so tiring. Emotions on overload. The main thought I took away from the funeral was that everyone spoke first about the man, second about the footballer. I guess there must have been 800-1,000 people at the service and I'm sure everyone there shed a tear.
The service was long...because so many people wanted to share their love.
Keemo looked like he was a teenager lying in the coffin. So damn young.

Also, I received this message from Graham Rix:

Hi Kev,
I'm all good thanks but so upset to hear about Keemo..my thoughts are with his family and friends...for my part I'll miss him as I thought he was a really good footballer with a great determination and passion...but more important he was a great lad, always ready to smile. I loved him and will miss him..I'm saying a prayer for him today and everyday x

Adams distinguished personality—Hungary FA
T&T Guardian

The President of the Hungary Football Association has issued a letter of condolence to the T&T Football Association (TTFA) and the family of Akeem Adams following the passing of the former national footballer last month.

Dr Sandor Csanyi, in a letter addressed to TTFA President Raymond Tim Kee, stated: “I was shocked and deeply grieved to learn about the death of the Ferencvaros player Akeem Adams.

“With his passing we have lost not only a talented and promising young footballer but also a distinguished personality. The memories of his exemplary life and football achievements will be treasured and long remembered by the Hungarian football community.

“On behalf of the Hungarian Football Federation and the whole Hungarian Football community, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to your association and kindly ask you to convey our sincere condolences to the bereaved family.”

Tim Kee also issued letters to the Ferencvaros club and the Hungarian FA, expressing gratitude on behalf of the T&T football community and the country at large for their care towards Akeem and his family. This letter was published by the Ferencvaros club and appeared in the Hungary media.

“On behalf of the T&T Football Association and the local footballing fraternity, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Ferencvarosi Club for going the distance with Akeem,” Tim Kee wrote.

“While we followed him from the moment he signed a contract with your club in August, at no time did any of us expect that his tenure there would take such a tragic and unfortunate turn. But you maintained your pledge to take care of Akeem even as he was unable to continue representing the club on the field of play. You took care of him like he was one of yours and no amount of words can express how we in T&T feel about this.

Akeem’s funeral is scheduled for 11.30 am at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin, tomorrow.

[Mod note - "Tomorrow" was the 17th January]

LAID TO REST
T&T team manager: Follow Akeem’s example

Sue-Ann Wayow (T&T Express)

IF every young person involved in criminal activity would put away the  guns and drugs and follow the example of footballer Akeem Adams, the country would be a much better place today. This was the message given yesterday by David Mohammed, manager of the Trinidad and Tobago football team, who described Adams as an exemplary footballer who accomplished much during his short life.

The funeral of the national footballer took place at Mahaica Oval, Point Fortin.

Adams, 22, died on December 30 in Hungary, where he was playing club football.

He had suffered a heart attack on September 25 that required life-saving operations, resulting in the loss of his left leg. On December 28, he suffered a brain haemorrhage and died while on life support.

His body was flown to Trinidad earlier this week from Hungary. where he played with FC Ferencvaros.

The club sent their flag to be draped on Adams’ casket and it was displayed along with the national flag.

Adams was described as an ambassador of T&T and a warrior by the many who paid tribute. Amongst them was Mohammed.

The T&T team manager told mourners they could learn a lesson from Adams’ death, that no matter where they came from, they could be great, just like Adams, who made his debut on the national team at age 16, in 2008.

Mohammed said every day, young people were killing each other because they had no more hope and Adams’ life should give hope to someone.

“In spite of the fact that we have lost Akeem Adams, we could hold up his life story to tell all of us that every single one of these youth out there have ability, have talent, have greatness in them. They  have the potential, the capacity to continue to strive and struggle and be productive and progressive and sacrifice in hard work and dedication and committed to be what Akeem Adams was,” said Mohammed.

Member of Parliament for La Brea Fitzgerald Jeffrey echoed Mohammed’s words.

“Let us try and stop the killing in our country and let us love like Akeem loved,” he said.

Adams’ three-hour funeral was filled with songs and tributes from his schools and the clubs he associated with.

Everyone who spoke about him described Adams as a smiling, jovial, hard-working person who loved football and dedicated his life to it.

Presentations were made to his brother Akini Adams.

Amongst them was a football jersey from Presentation College,San Fernando.

While at the school, Adams’ team number was four. However,  the jersey was placed in the casket and that number will not be used again by the school’s football team.

Brent Sancho, managing director of Central Football Club, also presented Akini Adams with a national jersey with his brother’s number on it.

Adams’ national team number was 24.

His mother, Ancilla Dick-Adams, gave the eulogy and spoke about the last three months she spent with her son in Budapest, Hungary.

She said she was happy to see Adams fulfill his dream of playing football professionally.

Dick-Adams told parents to instill discipline and respect in their children, as she did.

Her greatest joy, however, was that before Adams died, he was getting serious about God and had planned to be baptised when he returned home.

She said she was happy because Adams was going to a better place.

Adams had begun preparing a speech to make when he returned home, his mother said.

Dick-Adams said her son had thanked God for keeping him alive and everyone who had been praying and supporting him during his time at the European hospital.

Master of ceremonies  for the funeral service, Ivan Dick, called on authorities to complete Mahaica Oval so that the skills and talent of Point Fortin residents could be enhanced.

Director of Sport Dave Bobb gave his promise that he will try to complete the works in the shortest possible time.

No Government Minister attended the funeral.

The burial took place at Point Fortin public cemetery.

Adams laid to rest
JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH (T&T Newsday)

“A celebration of life.” Those were the sentiments echoed by the family members, supporters and well wishers who braced the inclement weather to pay their final respects to former national and Ferencvarosi Torna Club player, Akeem Adams, who was laid to rest in his hometown Point Fortin yesterday.

His mother Ancilla told the gathering that God was preparing him for heaven while in Hungary and now he is there with the Almighty.

The 22-year-old ex-Trinidad and Tobago defender succumbed to internal injuries on December 30 after suffering a severe heart attack in Hungary three months earlier. He leaves to mourn mother Ancilla Dick-Adams, brother Akini, uncle Ivan Dick, other family members and supporters.

The funeral for Adams was held at the Mahaica Oval, Point Fortin, which has fast become the the mecca of sports in the deep south.

Adams’ final farewell drew thousands of enthusiasts alike who all converged to say goodbye to a man who has surpassed international boundaries, creating unity between his Trinidad and Tobago and Hungary— the country that he last played football in.

Adams’ blue grey casket was draped in a specially woven flag, which comprised both the TT national flag and that of Ferencvarosi Torna Club.

At each corner of the casket, glass cases contained a uniquely designed golden football boot with a ball on top.

Delivering Adams’ eulogy was his mother Ancilla while his brother Akini stood alongside her. Her inspiring and heartfelt words were nothing less than that of a strong and rejuvenated woman who stood firmly on her faith in the Almighty God, which she said was her son’s will.

Strangely Ancilla did not shed a tear during the service and burial, which may have surprised many that attended. As she spoke, she smiled, and boldly emanated an image of solemn understanding that seemed beyond comprehension.

Ancilla recited moments of her final three months with her son while at the hospital and in Hungary. She explained that Akeem shockingly came to terms with his ailments soon after the amputation of his left leg.

“He said to me ‘I want to go to the gym’,” she joked. “He was stronger than a lot of us and the understanding that I saw on his face as time progressed, I realised that God was preparing him to leave the physical world. He made me accept his fate. Akeem prepared me for this and I am proud to say that I am burying my son today. No one will ever forget your smile Akeem.”

Also attending the funeral was Central FC managing director, Brent Sancho, who paid a special tribute by presenting Akini with Akeem’s team jersey, number 24. Terrence John of Presentation College, San Fernando, delivered an emotional but celebratory tribute and also presented Akini with Akeem’s number four Secondary School’s Football League jersey. This number was officially retired by the school and therefore no other student would ever wear that number in the school’s decorated football history.

Also saying their final goodbyes were representatives from the Egypt Village Primary School, the Presentation College School Choir, W Connection assistant coach Earl Jean, TTEC’s Peter Mohan, Central FC operations director Kevin Harrison, TT Pro League president Dexter Skeene, TT Player’s Association representative Earl “Mango” Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago Football Association member David Mohammed, Director of Sport at SporTT Dave Bobb, PNM Member of Parliament for Point Fortin and La Brea, Paula Gopee Scoon and Fitzgerald Jeffery .

Adams’ national team number was 24.

What's sad is that Sancho spoke at the funeral and told how he first saw Akeem play in the senior team. He was with his father, and when Akeem walked our wearing Sancho's old number - No 5 - he said to his Father "He looks like me, with his locks and the number 5 jersey"  Later in the game, his father turned to Brent and said "No-he's better than you!"

The number 24 jersey was Akeem's Central F.C. jersey! I wish journalists would pay attention!!

Adams tragedy hits Hungary hard

Adams tragedy hits Hungary hard
By Lasana Liburd (espnfc.com)

Akeem Adams was 22 years old when his body finally gave up its fight on Dec. 30, 2013, at the Varosmajori Heart Clinic in Budapest, Hungary.

Adams had spent three months fighting for his life with a mechanical heart and an amputated leg, the amiable, dreadlocked young Ferencvaros defender from Point Fortin, Trinidad, having been found unconscious on his apartment floor in September after suffering a heart attack.

Adams never lifted a trophy or even owned a car as an adult in Hungary or Trinidad and Tobago -- in fact, he spent more time in Budapest on a hospital bed than on the playing field -- yet his untimely passing prompted more than a hundred headlines in the country of his birth and the one of his death.

He first came to national prominence in his homeland when he made his senior international debut on March 19, 2008, at the tender age of 16. A strong, fearless and composed left-sided defender with decent footwork, he was still a Presentation College (San Fernando) student when then “Soca Warriors” coach Francisco Maturana thrust him in the starting lineup to face El Salvador.

Maturana, a former coach of Colombia and a South American icon, was a member of the FIFA technical committee at the 2007 Under-17 World Cup in South Korea, where Adams started all three games. And, in his first opportunity to select a local-based team, Maturana summoned Adams.

It caused a minor uproar. Adams had never played competitive senior football before and was a youth team player for local Pro League club W Connection. Critics railed that Adams’ selection was a slap in the face of the country’s professional players and an indictment against the judgment of the Connection coaching staff.

There was another point that was missed: Adams had not played competitively in almost four months. Although the Pro League was in full swing that March, the various national youth leagues had finished the previous December.

The young defender was quiet and steady in a 1-0 win on his debut against El Salvador and then, a week later, played like a man in a fierce battle away to Caribbean rivals Jamaica that ended 2-2. No sooner had the praise started than Adams picked up an injury. He never played again for Maturana, and three years passed before his next senior international cap.

Questions have been raised as to why that was the case. Was Maturana’s faith and enthusiasm in Adams a double-edged sword? Did the Colombian push the fresh-faced teenager before his time and perhaps without due consideration to the physical demands of the senior international game?

From the heart...
By Fazeer Mohammed (T&T Express)

Reactions in the midst of emotional turmoil don’t often stand up to dispassionate scrutiny.

So the temptation is to immediately categorise the decision by the administration of Presentation College of San Fernando to retire the number four worn by Akeem Adams when he played for the school’s football team as coming from the heart and not the head.

Who wouldn’t want to find some meaningful way to pay tribute to the fallen national player, especially when attempts at mounting a simple but tangible memorial at the institution’s entrance on Coffee Street just before the New Year came to nothing, thanks to another of those lawless, predatory elements who abound in sweet T&T?

And of course the storyline is uniquely tragic to our sporting experience. A young, talented national player mere weeks into his association with a top Hungarian club is struck down by a massive heart attack and, despite the best medical care available, the support of his mother and brother at his bedside and the prayers of so many others, including his new teammates, he eventually succumbs just over three months later, leaving many to wonder what could have been and, as in the case of “Pres”, what should be done to honour his memory.

In opting to retire his number, meaning that no-one else can ever wear the number four on their shirt when playing in the colours of Presentation College, the school appears to have broken new ground, for I am not aware of any similar instance in any sport in this country. That doesn’t make it an inappropriate course of action of itself, for all traditions everywhere and in every sphere of life had to start somewhere.

Even if the accusation is that this is merely replicating a regular practice in sport in the United States, what’s wrong with that? Are English sporting traditions the only ones worth following? Fans of American professional sports will be familiar with the retired numbers of superstar players of various franchises hanging from the rafters at basketball and ice hockey venues or being prominently displayed at baseball or American football stadiums.

Some numbers are also withdrawn when a player dies suddenly in the midst of a career, so it’s not as if Presentation are venturing into completely new territory here. There’s no question that shock and grief at the loss of a 22-year-old who appeared to have so much to accomplish in the game would have contributed to the retiring of his school team number. Yet once it serves its purpose as a tribute that’s all that really matters.

Where there may be some contention would be whether, if you’re going the way of retiring numbers now, Akeem Adams is singularly deserving of the honour among the thousands who would have played football for Presentation College of San Fernando.

Maybe it’s something the principal should clarify, just to ensure it is not perceived as an inadvertent slighting of those who represented the school with pride and considerable distinction on the football pitch over the years and whose numbers will still be worn when the 2014 seasons kicks off in September.

If Akeem’s passing and this particular way of remembering him triggers a bit of dialogue among sporting clubs, teams and national associations over the manner in which outstanding performers are honoured, then it will be a worthwhile act above and beyond its intention to highlight the contribution of the central defender to the game he loved so much.

We have a Sports Hall of Fame at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, but apart from the fact that you hardly ever see anyone stopping to look at those names during any event there, it also seems to be a case for us of “out of sight, out of mind”.

No-one can say we didn’t put so-and-so in the Hall of Fame, but what do we really know of them to the extent that we or the generations who follow us can be inspired by their stories?

Yes, most of us can crow of the accomplishments of Brian Lara, Dwight Yorke and Ato Boldon because they are of fairly recent vintage. And while names like Mannie Dookie, Raffie Knowles and Hilton “Barracuda” Mitchell may ring just a bell, there is no proper appreciation of their achievements because we not only treat their stories like ancient history, but ancient history that has nothing to do with us.

A significant contributor to our almost complete lack of civic pride is that we know very little about ourselves, our country and even our own communities, including the sporting personalities who either went on to achieve great things in great arenas around the world or were outstanding stalwarts for their clubs and districts.

It is that absence of civic pride that will cause someone, apparently under the cloak of darkness on the night of December 30 last, to steal flowers, candles and a portrait of Akeem Adams from in front of Presentation College, items of no real material value but of great sentimental importance to quite a few people. But this is what we have come to: t’iefin anything in sight and then working out what it is we t’ief.

Maybe it was that soul-destroying incident which prompted the “Pres” hierarchy to come with a tribute out of the ordinary. Retired number? Let’s see how anyone can t’ief that! Even if it doesn’t seem possible, I wouldn’t get too complacent. They don’t call us Trickydadians up the islands for nothing.

I'm not sure, but usually numbers are retired after such a tragedy...a kind of "death in service" tribute. I believe other numbers have been retired in recognition of long service etc, but, to me, that's not quite fitting. I think that the Pres gesture was excellent and I doubt they will not need to repeat such a gesture in a very long time.

Ferencvros finish 3rd, celebrate by remembering Akeem
« Reply #588 on: June 01, 2014, 07:49:40 PM »
From the Fradi website......

Today afternoon FTC’s last match of this season was organized at Puskás Stadium. This match had utmost important as it decided the destiny of the bronze medal and a Europa League position. Knowing this, our supporters showed extremely high interest and bought up almost all the tickets.

The first half was evenly balanced; while Fradi had 7, Paks 6 shots but no goals. However, the second half was completely different. First, Bönig scored nicely from 11m after Böde’s assist and then, Leonardo raised the difference to 2-0 with his penalty shot. Ugrai had one more try right before the final-whistle but he shot wide and the match ended with our 2-0 final victory. The supporters were waiting by the sideline to celebrate together with the team. After the final whistle, a big celebration started on the pitch. The team put on a t-shirt commemorating our former player, Akeem Adams.

Today’s victory means that after three years, our team will go to Europe again.   :beermug:

Although Akeem didn't play with Central this season, a clip of him was included in the season highlight compilation shown at the End of Season Awards, as well as the special farewell video made for Terry Fenwick.
