Table-topper Club Sando, which is on a bye for the weekend, will remain at the helm of the blink/bmobile National Super League standings while current-runner up Guaya United seeks to cut the gap to one point, when it makes the trip to Canaan, Bon Accord, Tobago, to face fifth-placed 1976 FC Phoenix.
Only two weeks ago, Guaya was handed its first loss in what otherwise has been an exceptional start to the season for the newly-promoted East Counties champion. Since then, Guaya has returned to winning ways when it handed Club Sando its first loss of the campaign in style with a 3-1 victory.
Guaya will need to be economical with its team selection heading into the match as it is set to play its match in hand, a rescheduled Match Day One trip to Frederick Settlement, Caroni, to face third-from-bottom on Tuesday. That match and all of today’s fixtures will kick off at 4 pm. A win today will see Guaya breathing down the necks of Club Sando, while a loss will give third-placed Malabar FC a chance at returning to second. Malabar FC will host Tobago’s Stokely Vale at UTT Ground, O’Meara.
Malabar, by a considerable distance has been the best attacking team this season, scoring 33 goals in 11 matches, while its defence has been shaky at time, conceding 20 goals.
Today’s match day which continues with two rescheduled matches on Tuesday will see the conclusion of the first round of fixtures. The knockout competition will start next weekend and the opening round fixtures will depend on the placement of teams after this round concludes.
