JOE PUBLIC began their campaign in the Bmobile National Super League with a 2-1 victory over St Francois Nationals, on Match Day One, at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna, yesterday.
St Francois almost broke the deadlock in the fifth minute as Marlon Bowen broke free on the right and his right-footed chip crashed off the right post with goalkeeper Jevon Bourne stranded.

Ellis Dyett put Joe Public in front in the 31st, as he moved free on the left and placed a low angled left-footed drive beyond the reach of St Francois’ goalie Jason Bowen.

Dyett doubled his tally in the 62nd, heading home from close range as Kwesi Thomas’ inswininging corner was diverted by the heads of Billy Dee Scantlebury and Jamel Lewis.

Gabriel St John got the consolation strike for St Francois with a wonderfully-taken left-footed freekick. After Marlon Bowen was taken down by Lewis, St John, from an awkward run-up, swerved his 25-metre effort over the reach of Bourne.

Economy Strikers registered the day’s biggest win, 4-0 over newcomers East/West Coaching School at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima, with Dorian Daniel netting a hat-trick (14th, 60th and 78th minutes) and Dale Simon the other (53rd). M&M Harvard earned a 2-0 upset win over hosts WASA at St Joseph, courtesy strikes from Christon Freitas (18th) and Glen Walker (65th) while 1976 FC Phoenix got a similar result over Harlem Strikers at Canaan, Bon Accord, through Andel Noray (eighth) and an own goal (33rd).

Defence Force and debutants Queen’s Park drew 1-1 in the first match of a double-header at the Youth Camp, Chaguaramas - the evergreen Kelshall Alexander (11th) put the Army-Coast Guard combination ahead but Jason Charles (52nd) equalised for the Parkites.

And, in the other game at Chaguaramas, new recruits T&TEC came from a goal-down to edge ALCOA Carenage United 2-1, with Gerron McKnight (22nd) and Daniel Garcia (78th) responding to the early strike from Carenage’s Steve Edwards (second).
