ENGLAND women’s team coach and former top player Hope Powell has sent her best wishes to the Local Organising Committee on the hosting of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.

In a letter addressed to CONCACAF President Jack Warner on Tuesday, Powell expressed her desire to see a successful tournament and also wished the host team well.

The tournament kicks off of on Sunday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo with North Korea facing Nigeria from 3 pm. Hosts Trinidad and Tobago play Chile from 6 pm.

“May I take this opportunity to wish you and your colleagues the very best of luck ahead of the FIFA Under 17 Women’s World Cup. I am sure that the tournament will be a great success, not least because of your commitment to developing and supporting women’s football in the region.

“It is fantastic to see so many leading nations competing at this age group and I hope that as hosts, Trinidad and Tobago do you proud. I look forward to following the competition,” Powell stated.

Meantime, TT U-17 captain Lauren Schmidt said her team-mates were all ready for the big event as they settled in at the Crowne Plaza in Port- of-Spain yesterday ahead of their opening match.

“We’re all ready to go,” Schmidt declared. “We’re so anxious we can hardly stop thinking about the opening game. At the moment we’re very well prepared physically and we are as fit as can be.

“I think it’s just a matter of getting it right mentally. Of course we’re a bit nervous at the moment but I think we will be fine by the time the match comes around,” Schmidt said.
