The University of  Great Falls men’s soccer team continued its program record winning streak on Friday by defeating Southwestern College (AZ) in a neutral site game played at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, UT. Travis Larsen (Honokaa, HI/ Honokaa High School) and Ryan O’Neil (Arima, Trinidad/James Madison University) each scored twice to the lead the Argos.

“We’ve been putting pressure on opposing defenses all year, but lately we’ve struggled finding the back of the net. That all changed today,” said UGF head coach Tim Brooks whose team runs its overall record to 820 with the victory.

The Argos wasted little time putting themselves on top as sophomore David Jimenez (Long Beach, CA/Cabrillo High School) scored from 6 yards out into the near post in the second minute of the contest. O’Neil added his first tally of the game in the twelfth minute after receiving a through pass from freshman Carlos Guarneros (Long Beach, CA/Cabrillo High School) who also assisted on the Jimenez goal to open the game.

Larsen made the score 30 at the 42:50 mark as the Argos capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. Junior Mario Rivera (Lynwood, CA/Lynwood High School) was credited with an assist on the play.

The Argos unrelenting offense did not let up in the second half as Larsen and O’Neil added their second goal each of the afternoon, along with single tallies by freshman Brendan Kimball (Portland, OR/Valley Catholic High School) and senior Santiago Bussato (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach City College). Second half assists went to freshman Miguel Mendez (Bonners Ferry, ID/Bonners Ferry High School), junior Chris Worthen (Bonney Lake, WA/Bonney Lake High School) and senior Assion Locoh (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach City College).

O’Neil’s second half tally was his fifth of the season in as many games played. Southwestern managed just three shots on goal in the contest. The Argos put 23 of their 28 total shots on net. Argo goalkeeper Zach Johnson (Casper, WY/Kelly Walsh High School) made three saves. Freshman Jose Duron (Long Beach, CA/Cabrillo High School) played the second half in net for the Argos, but did not face a shot.

The Argos are back in action on this Sunday, September 27 in another neutral site game in Salt Lake City against Soka University of America (CA).
