Scoring goals has been an issue for the University of the Incarnate Word men’s soccer team so far this season.

A trip to Newman University for a Heartland Conference game against the Jets, however, might help fix those woes for Incarnate Word.

Up 2-0 on the Jets already, the visiting Cardinals had the fortune of getting to welcome a freshman goalkeeper to the league on Friday night after Newman’s starting goalie went down with an injury. UIW assaulted the Newman goal and racked up five more goals before the final whistle sounded for a 7-0 victory.

Seven different players scored for UIW – Tom Morrill, Jamie Scope, Michael Terrell, Troy Thompson, Craig Bartlett, Carlos Gonzalez and Stefan Vivar – and Ryan Eschenburg earned his fourth shutout of the season in goal for the Cardinals (4-3-3 overall, 2-0 in conference).

UIW now has to make the long trip from Kansas back to Texas for a 4 p.m. game on Sunday against Texas-Permian Basin. UIW returns home to Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup against rival St. Mary’s University.
