The University of Great Falls men’s soccer team won a 2-1 decision against Westminster College in overtime on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City. The Argos would hand the Griffins only their second loss at Dumke Field in eight games this season.

Sophomore Miguel Mendez (Bonners Ferry, ID) gave Great Falls (7-2-1, 1-1) an early 1-0 lead when he blasted a shot inside the near post on a pass from David Jimenez (Long Beach, CA) in the 23rd minute. The goal would be the second of the season for Mendez. Westminster tallied the equalizer in the 34th minute when Matt Jimenez headed home a Josh Questereit direct kick.

The game would remain tied at 1-1 through the regulation 90 minutes. The Argos would score the game winner in the 96th minute when Ryan O’Neil (Arima, Trinidad) got his head on a direct kick from William Obregon (Managua, Nicaragua) and put it past Griffin keeper Nathan Young for the victory.

“I am really proud of our team today. We worked hard for almost the entire game and got the big win,” proclaimed an ecstatic Head Coach Paul Zazenski. “We really needed to pick up this win after a tough loss to Rocky. Now that we have some confidence again, I am excited to take on Rocky at home this Friday.”

Westminster held a 16-10 shot advantage; however, each team put five shots on goal. The Argos had three cornerkicks and was called offside the same number of times. Great Falls junior goalkeeper Zach Johnson (Casper, WY) recorded four saves on the day. The game featured 23 combined fouls and five yellow cards.

Great Falls will be in action again at home next Friday, October 1 when they take on the Battlin’ Bears of Rocky Mountain College following the women’s game in Great Falls, MT. The women’s game is set for 2 pm and the men’s for 4 pm at Siebel Soccer Park.
