University of the Incarnate Word’s top five point-getters of the season all combined in a 3-0 shutout victory over cross-town rival St. Mary’s University at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium on Sunday night.

Jesus Cortez (fourth on the team in points this season) scored first for the Cardinals (6-1) from outside the penalty area to start the scoring for UIW, arching a shot over STMU’s goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute of the game. Cortez’s second goal of the season was set up by Vincent Bailey’s pass into space (Bailey’s first assist of the season, he is second on the team in points).

Ten minutes later, Dustin Lemley (fifth on the team in points) dished out his third assist of the year, dribbling nearly to the back line of the Rattler’s penalty area and then slipping a pass into the middle of the box where Callum Riley scored his team-leading 7th goal of the season to put the Cardinals up 2-0 in the 15th minute.

The score didn’t change until the 76th minute of the game when Riley added an assist to the scoresheet (he leads the team with 15 points) by setting up Troy Thompson with a low crossing pass that Thompson put past the goalie in-stride.

On the opposite side of the field, UIW goalkeeper Chris Fidler only had to make one true save to earn his third consecutive shutout of the season, although St. Mary’s did come inches away from getting on the scoreboard on two separate occasions – hitting the post in the first half and having the shot cleared away by a trailing UIW defender in the second.

UIW will be back on the road to face some Lone Star Conference teams in Eastern New Mexico (Friday in Portales, NM at 4 p.m.) and West Texas A&M (Sunday in Canyon at 2 p.m.)
