$37,500 to see Under-20s live in Egypt.
By: Nigel Simon (T&T Guardian).

The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs has turned down a request from All Sports Promotion to get involve in this country’s overall participation at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup, Egypt from September 24 to October 16. This was announced by Anthony Harford, All Sports Promotion marketing director at a media briefing held at the President’s Box, Queen’s Park Oval, Tragarete Road, yesterday to announce a Charter Flight package for the Finals.

T&T led by Leston Paul will compete at the tournament, the second highest ranked among Fifa competitions, behind the World Cup Finals. In Egypt, T&T will come up against the host in opening match on September 24, Republic Day here in T&T while the Zoran Vranes coached squad will also face Italy (September 28) and Paraguay (October 1) in their group matches.

In an effort to gather support for the national team and promote this country in Egypt, All Sports Promotion, who had successful Charter Flights to the T&T 2006 Fifa World Cup playoff qualifier to Bahrain in 2005 and the Fifa Finals in Germany one year later has once again organised a Charter which will cost TT$37,500 or US$6,000 per person.

The tour to Egypt, which departs on September 21 and returns October 2, includes tickets for the three T&T matches, a city tour of Cairo, tour of the Pyramids and a cruise on the River Nile with dinner.

With that in mind, All Sports director Anthony Harford said, “I wrote the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Genders Affairs, and the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs asking them to get involve with different aspects of T&T being represented on the world stage in Egypt, as was the case in Germany.

“However, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, through its Minister, Gary Hunt replied to us and said that they will not be getting involved due to a lack of funds.” Harford had some much better news from the Ministry of Education though with regards following his request for the 2009 National School Panorama champions to be taken to Egypt.

Once given the nod, its expected the school panorama champions will play the T&T national anthem at all three of its opening round group matches, a decision which has the support of Fifa Tournament Committee chairman and Fifa vice-president, Jack Warner, a special advisor to the T&TFF. Within the next couple of days, Harford said a decision will be made from two locals bank with regards to providing loans to persons wishing to go to Egypt on the Charter.
