THE 2016 season of the annual Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond Football League opens today with the customary march past of teams at the Fishing Pond Recreation Ground from 1 pm.

Also on the cards is the league opener featuring defending champions G Madrid against round-robin winners Take That and Cool It at 4 pm.

G Madrid were deserved winners of the 2015 final following a 4-0 trouncing of Gremio in the final and they will be keen to kick off their season with three points.

The march past will be judged by league organiser Prakash Ramkissoon as well as Peter Park of title sponsor Caribbean Welders.

Chairman of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation Terry Rondon has been invited to the league opening.

This year, the first prize has been adjusted to $30,000 with the runners-up taking home $7,000.

The third and fourth-placed teams get $5,000 and $3,000 respectively.

The registration fee this season is $2,500 per team which includes 13 players.

There will also be prizes at the end of the season for Most Valuable Player, Golden Boot, Most Goals (Team), Most Disciplined Team, Best Goalkeeper, Best Goal, Best Defender etcetra.

Ramkissoon expressed gratitude to the sponsors of the league and is expecting another exciting year of football action.

He indicated that the Raffie Morock Trophy will continue with the round robin group stage winner receiving $1,000 as well as the challenge trophy.
