Shelton Williams netted a double in FC Phoenix’s opening 3-1 away victory over newly promoted Eagles United in Day 1 of the bmobile National Super League on Wednesday.

In the match played at the Woodford Lodge in Chaguanas, the home team were pressed back for the majority of the match and were down 0-1 by the end of the first half via Williams’ opener. Williams doubled the tally with 69 minutes on the clock, just before Andell Brown could seal three points for Phoenix a minute later.

The home team was slightly consoled by Glenwell John’s goal in the 87th minute but it was too late for a comeback.

After Westside Super Starz went down in the All Sport Shield to WASA FC 1-2 on Monday, and with Eagles being shut down at home, it was up to Real Maracas give the promoted sides some hope.

Real Maracas, however, attempted a late fight back but eventually lost the match 1-2, on home turf against Club Sando Giants.

Ronnie Forbes and Stefon Brereton scored goals in the 49th and 87th minute in the Maracas Recreation Ground in Maracas. Brian Hinds responded by scoring for Real Maracas just before the final whistle in the 90th minute.

In other matches, Stokely Vale recovered from a goal down to win 2-1 against St. Francois Nationals at the Plymouth Recreation Ground in Tobago. Marlon Bowen’s 8th minute opener kept St. Francois in the lead by halftime.

The Tobago side, Stokely Vale returned more determined in the second half, and found the equaliser just minutes in from Dion Thomas. Antonio Balfour won the match for Stokely Vale in the last minute to the jubilation of the home team and it’s support.

Finally, bmobile Joe Public FC were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Defence Force at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya. Ronald St. Louis took the lead for the away team, Defence Force but the effort was cancelled out in the 25th minute by Donovan Derrick.

Defence Force, however, did well to hold on to the away point. Five matches are scheduled for Wednesday when the Super League resumes.

At 4pm on the day, Real Maracas will host 1976 FC Phoenix, Eagles United hosts Defence Force FC, Club Sando Giants will take on travelling Westside Super Starz FC at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium while WASA FC will take on the visiting Stokely Vale FC. In the slightly later 4:30 fixture, bmobile Joe Public FC will take on St. Francois Nationals at the Marvin Lee Stadium.
