Defending champs Carapichaima survived a scare against last placed Waterloo but eventually prevailed 3-2 on kicks in the Central Zone Secondary Schools Football League’s 2009 Coca Cola Intercol which took place at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva yesterday.

However the zone’s second placed team, Presentation, was not as fortunate, being ousted by Tabaquite, also on kicks in the semi-final double header.

In the first match, Caps came away with the win in sudden death penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 1-1. Both teams then missed one of the first five tries. However it was too good to be true for Waterloo and the pressure got to one of its kickers and who sent his shot wide of the mark.

A Carapichaima player than stepped up and nailed his kick to send the defending champs to another final. Earlier Waterloo went into the match as clear underdogs but took a surprise 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when Leon O’Garro found the net.

The celebrations were however short lived as the league champs bounced back ten minutes later to equalise through Nathan James. In the other semi-final Tabaquite led by a double from Shaun Outar, shocked Presentation, coming back from two goals down in the first half to level things before winning 4-2 on penalty kicks.

Presentation took an early lead through Jeremy Clarke in the 10th minute. The lead was doubled in the 20th minute compliments of a Brian Charles strike. The second seed Central team held the lead until the 54th minute when Outar scored his first from an indirect free kick.

He completed his double six minutes later to level the score at 2-2, which stayed the same at the end of regulation time. Tabaquite which made it to the Intercol as a result of winning the senior division will move up to the championship division next season. (KS)
