Chelsea 1-0 QPR

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/fa_cup/7163956.stm

Claudio Pizarro
Pizarro celebrates but it was Camp who helped his effort into the net

Holders Chelsea edged past their west London neighbours but were helped by a Lee Camp own goal to seal their place in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Hoops's goalkeeper was helpless as Claudio Pizarro's low drive hit the post, rebounded off Camp's back and bobbled across the line.

Substitute Patrick Agyemang should have slotted past Hilario after the break as the well-organised visitors improved.

Rangers pressed late on but the below-par Blues dug in to progress.

Rarely do Chelsea host a side richer than themselves but their class prevailed in this battle of the billionaires, despite a spirited performance from the team 35 places below them in the league standings.

This local rivalry that has simmered without engagement for 12 years stirred the Hoops into action early on and they denied their neighbours the time and space to create clear chances.

But the visitors' early zest and work rate soon fizzled out and they fell behind on 28 minutes, albeit through a huge slice of fortune.

Pizarro swivelled on the edge of the box and crashed his low shot off the post, only for Camp to inadvertently knock it back in.

The goal settled the home side who wrestled control of the game in midfield with Steve Sidwell dictating the play.

Shaun Wright-Phillips went close when he fired over from the edge of the box, while Sidwell went even closer when he struck the post with a low drive from 25 yards that had Camp well beaten.

QPR, with five debutants in their starting line-up, failed to seriously trouble Hilario although Agyemang should have slotted past the keeper from close range. Instead, he scuffed his effort into the keeper's arms.

Akos Buzsaky, a former team-mate of Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira from their time at Porto, failed to make any impact and was reduced to speculative long shots.

Didier Drogba, bound for the African Cup of Nations on Sunday, made his return from the knee surgery he underwent in early December. But he, and those behind him, struggled to kill off a dogged QPR.

But despite a valiant effort in the last 15 minutes, the four-time winners held out to progress.

Watching the FA Cup and thinking when Kolo gorn who should partner Gallas. Senderos whom I defended in the past is simply too nervous a defender. Wenger should experiment with Sanga, who played the role several times for his club in France. Eboue will be out as well so he will have to find a right back as well.

It might well be Gilberto.  He's filled in there in the past.

A real long shot could be Abou Diaby but unlikely given Senderos' experience.

Djourou will return to Gunners

Wenger has recalled Djourou  and  Hoyte is also available at RB.

Djourou will return to Gunners

Djourou: Will cover for Toure

Johan Djourou will definitely return to Arsenal in January when his loan deal at Birmingham expires.

Alex McLeish had been keen to keep the Swiss international defender at St Andrews but Arsene Wenger has requested that the player return to the Emirates.

Djourou had followed in the footsteps of Fabrice Muamba and Nicklas Bendtner by joining the Midlands outfit on-loan, but after making 12 appearances for the club he will now return to London.

The main reason behind Wenger's desire for Djourou to return to his parent club is that Kolo Toure is due to represent the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations, a situation which will leave Arsenal short of defensive options.

Despite being disappointed that he is losing the player, McLeish accepts his fellow manager's decision.

Presence

"Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has told me he is taking him back in January," the former Scotland boss told the Birmingham Mail.

"He will be a loss, for sure. It is disappointing that he is not going to be with us for much longer.

"But, you have to respect Arsenal's decision.

"Johan is a big presence of a boy, no doubt about that, and those kind of players seem to be a feature of many a squad in the Premier League."

Arsenal V Stoke/Newcastle

i don't mind either side, anyway bring on Spurs tomorrow (h) then birmingham (h) then fulham (a) then spurs 2nd leg (a) then to round out the month FA Cup (h) looking at the fixtures i would prefer stoke, as the next game after the FA Cup game is Newcastle (h)

what a month yes, hope we make it through un-injured, hope that toure and eboue and song get back in one piece and not fatigued from ACON. cus theres a full 4 more months of games after that, providing we make it to the fa cup carling cup and champions league finals too.

Given the age of the Arsenal squad and the ambitions of Tottenham a draw might look like an Arsenal win to the press and the neutrals.

Very similar outcome to last season. Should be an interesting second leg.

I recognize that it was a young side today but Arsenal have some of the best young talent in the Premiership.  The second team would probably finish mid-table if not better.

BTW the fleckin' goal came off of Walcott hand!!!!!!

Our luck going to turn eventually...............

Arsenal will be without Robin van Persie and Johan Djourou for a few weeks.

The Dutch striker (thigh) and the Swiss centre back (groin) both picked up their injuries in the Carling Cup Semi-Final first leg against Tottenham on January 9. They missed the draw with Birmingham last Saturday and now it appears their absences will go on. However, on a brighter note, Tomas Rosicky will be back for the trip to Fulham on Saturday. The Czech midfielder fell ill on the eve of the game against Alex McLeish’s side.

“Compared to last week we have Robin van Persie who is out for a few weeks,” Arsène Wenger told Arsenal TV Online. “I believe Tomas Rosicky will be OK to come back.

“But Johan Djourou is out as well. He has had an inflammation of his groin and in the next two weeks he will not be capable to play.”

Arsenal TV Online subscribers will be able to see the full video interview on Friday morning. In it Wenger talks about: the departure of Lassana Diarra, the arrival of Kevin Keegan, the draw with Birmingham, the injury situation, the problems at Fulham and the appointment of Roy Hodgson.

3-0 to the arsenal!

spurs tomorrow, should be a very interesting game, i think they will go with berbatov, keane, lennon, defoe, jenas. to take advantage of arsenals weakened back line which sees gallas coming in to bolster things.

then newcastle come to us on saturday for FA Cup 4th round and then 3 days later back again for premireship game at home. man i love this game

Tottenham 5-1 Arsenal

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/league_cup/7197913.stm

(Spurs win 6-2 on aggregate)

By Mandeep Sanghera

Spurs celebrate after Robbie Keane put them 3-0 up against Arsenal

A pulsating Tottenham performance saw them run riot against Arsenal to book a place in the Carling Cup final.

Spurs got off to the perfect start when Jermaine Jenas angled in a shot to put them 2-1 ahead on aggregate.

Arsenal's Nicolas Bendtner then headed into his own net before Robbie Keane's 18-yard shot put Spurs 3-0 up.

Aaron Lennon sidefooted in for Spurs before Emmanuel Adebayor grabbed a consolation for Arsenal but Steed Malbranque's strike completed the rout.

Tottenham had been left rueing a late Arsenal equaliser in the first leg and they also had the psychological baggage of not having beaten their arch rivals since November 1999.

But with home advantage and Arsenal's penchant for fielding fringe players in the Carling Cup, Spurs scented victory and they grabbed an early lead.

Jenas was allowed time and space to drive a shot across goal and the ball went in off the post after three minutes.

Spurs gave Arsenal's defence no respite with their fluent and attacking football as they took a stranglehold on the match.

The Gunners were also starved of possession in attack and they rarely looked like levelling, due to a mixture of poor play and a determined White Hart Lane side.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had kept faith with most of his second string for the game but drafted in a handful of first-team regulars in centre-back William Gallas, right-back Bacary Sagna and playmaker Alexander Hleb.

But the trio struggled to help their side break Spurs's grip and even the introduction of Cesc Fabregas for the injured Denilson did not help the visitors.

Instead, Bendtner's own goal added to the home side's lead after he headed in as he went up with Michael Dawson to meet a Jenas free-kick.

Arsenal were rattled and on the backfoot and Dimitar Berbatov should have inflicted another bodyblow to the visitors when he was clean through, only to hit the post with his shot.

Arsenal striker Nicolas Bendtner (left) and defender William Gallas argue in the 5-1 loss to Spurs
Arsenal's Bendtner (left) and Gallas had a row near the end of the game

Jenas poked into the side-netting just before the break but Spurs did not have long to wait for a third.

Lennon's delightful ball with the outside of his right foot sent Keane through to score with a shot which appeared to catch Fabianski by surprise and one he should have saved.

Almost immediately, Bendtner looked set to give Arsenal a lifeline, only to see his strike bounce the wrong side of the goal-line after hitting the underside of the crossbar.

It got worse for Arsenal when Lennon slotted in on the hour mark as Spurs threatened to run riot.

Adebayor's 20-yard strike was too late to give Arsenal a way back into the game and their frustration boiled over when Bendtner appeared to argue with his team-mate and goalscorer before exchanging angry words with Gallas.

Malbranque compounded Arsenal's misery as Juande Ramos secured a place in the Carling Cup final on 24 February in his first season in charge.

Tottenham: Cerny, Chimbonda, Dawson, King, Lee, Lennon (Huddlestone 74), Jenas, Tainio, Malbranque, Keane (Boateng 64), Berbatov (Defoe 64).
Subs Not Used: Robinson, O'Hara.

Booked: Malbranque, Jenas.

Goals: Jenas 3, Bendtner 27 og, Keane 48, Lennon 60, Malbranque 90.

Arsenal: Fabianski, Sagna, Justin Hoyte, Gallas, Traore (Eduardo 65), Hleb, Denilson (Fabregas 18), Silva, Diaby, Walcott (Adebayor 65), Bendtner.
Subs Not Used: Mannone, Flamini.

Booked: Justin Hoyte, Adebayor.

"rapid underground specualtion seems to have been given more fuel followng nikalas bendters bust upwith emmanuel adebayor.

seems arsenals scouts have an eye on the tall trinidadian striker. although the same type of player and adebayor, jones appears to be more mature than the danish moody striker.

however a straight swap is highly unlikely but the dane may return to birminigham with the rest of his youth and reserve team arsenal team mates hungry for regular first team appearances"

arsenal pride themselves on team spirit this season. so that clash surprise me. the loss - not so much. the margin - yea.

this is the 1st game that adebayor scored and arsenal didnt win?

hopefully tottenham can take some points off the rest of the big four, (or should i say 3?), in the league.
